2 Claims. (Cl. 22951) This invention relates to a food package comprising a strippable wrapper or carton and a handle or holder for supporting the food while being consumed after the wrapper or carton is removed therefrom. More specifically,
the invention relates to a single service package of frozen comestible, such as ice cream, sherbet, and the like, which is packaged in a carton provided with a handle extending therefrom on which the ice cream and the like is supported after the carton is stripped from the ice cream.
The package is made preferably from a single blank of cardboard and the like which is suitably cut and scored so as to provide a container for receiving and retaining therein the comestible as well as retaining at one portion thereof a suitable handle which extends through the exterior of the carton and into .the food contained therein. The carton is also suitably cut and scored so that it may be readily peeled or stripped from the comestible while the food is supported by the handle, thereby leaving the handle supporting the food so that it may be held while being consumed.
Further advantages and details of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a single paper blank which is suitably cut and scored to provide a carton for the purposes of this invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the carton made from the blank shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a perspective view, partially cut away, showing the completed carton made from the blank shown in Figure l and having the bottom flaps in partially closed condition,
Figure '4 is a perspective View of a handle which is adapted to be inserted in the carton shown in Figure 3 for retaining the ice cream and the like thereon when .the carton is removed,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the completed package showing the carton and the handle inserted in final assembled condition,
Figure 6 is a fragmental sectional view taken on lines 66 of Figure 5,
Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the first step in stripping the carton from the ice cream packaged therein,
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the package at a later stage of the removal of the carton panels from the ice cream packaged therein,
Figure 9 is still a further stage showing the stripping and tearing of the carton panels from the ice cream block packaged in the carton, and
ice
blank which is suitably cut and scored along a series of spaced parallel score lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 to provide a front panel 10, a side panel 11 hinged thereto, a rear panel 12, and a side panel 13. These panels are hinged consecutively along the respective score lines 1, 2 and 3. A plurality of consecutively hinged extension panels 14, 15, 16 and 17 are hingedly connected to panel 13 along score line 4. Panels 14 and 15 are separated by score line 5. Panels 15 and 16 are separated by a partiallycut score line 6. Panels 16 and 17 are separated by a partially cut score line 7. Panel 17 is cut out at its free edge to provide a plurality of tooth-like portions indicated by numeral 17a. Panels 16 and 17 are adapted to be folded over on cut score line 6 and are then glued on their inner surface to the overlapped portions of panels 14 and 15, as shown in Figure 2, whereby panels 15 and 16 will provide a grasping portion for opening the carton. Panel portions 16 and 17 are adapted to be folded over the'free edge portion of the front panel 10 and adhered thereto by means of adhesive which is ap-' plied only to the areas delineated by the tooth-like por tions 17a of panel 17 so as to form a tubular carton-as shown in Figure 2.
In forming a carton from the blank, as described, ad-
hesive is applied to the upper surface of panels 16 and 17 and they are folded over and adhered to panels15 and 14. The blank is then folded over along score line 2 in the manner shown in Figure 2 and then adhesive is applied to the exposed surface of panel 17 which is superimposed. on the. front wall. by. folding the. com.- bined panels 14, 15, 16 and 17 on their hinge line 4 in a manner shown in Figure 2, whereupon the blank will be formed into a. tubular. container as shown in Figure 31 Thepackage isformed by setting up the walls- 10, 11, 12. and 13 thereof. intoright angular relation, as shown inxFigure 3, and" then. the top is closed by first folding flap inwardly of the carton, then folding flap 24thereover, thenfolding flaps 18 and 22 over the previously foldedfiaps so as to permit the tongue 22a to enter the slot- 18a provided in flap 1'8'intolocking. engagement. Ice cream" or other suitable comestible is then poured through the open lower end of the carton and when the carton is filled, the-lower closure flaps are suitably closed by foldingiover the-panel 21, then folding thereover the panel 25, then. folding in the panel 19 and finally folding panel 23 thereover. A handle 50 is then inserted through the slit z-in panel- 23. and then'through the slit in panel 21 and; into the relatively soft contained comestible, in the manner shown in Figure 5. The' cut-out portion 19a permits passage of the handle through the slits 40 and 45; Instead of'a cut-out portion 19a, a slit may be provided in Harp 19 to permit handle 50 to pass therethrough. As the. handle 50 is inserted through the slits in panels 21 and 23, the small hinged panel portions 21a provided in panel 21 and small hinged panel portions 23a in flap 23- will be folded inwardly of' the carton as shown in Figure 6. These panels 21a and 23a will tend to spring back to their original position and thereby will engage the surface of the handle 50 and thus frictionally retain same in tight. engagement.
The finished package will have the appearance shown in Figure. 5.. The ice cream and the like packaged as described is now suitably frozen and can be stored and shipped as may be desired.
'When. it is desired to consume the ice cream or other comestible packaged within the carton, it is merely necessary to grasp the tear flap- 15 so as to tear the tongue portions 17a from adhesion to the front panel 10 in the manner. shownin Figure 7. The fibers of the panel 17 will split apart leaving part of the fiber 17a adhering to the. front panel 10 as shown in Figure 7. Upon pulling the tear flap 16 to the left as shown in Figure 7, the side wall 13 and the hinged upper and lower flaps 24 and 25 will be disengaged from the remaining portions of the carton as shown in Figure 7. Upon further pulling, the carton panels will assume the position shown in Figure 8 the panel 12 beingseparated at its lower portion along the perforated score line 30, leaving the flap portion 23 in engagement with the handle 50. At the same time, the upper closure panel 22 will be disengaged from the slit 18a provided in flap 18. Upon further pulling of the carton panels in the manner shown in Figure 9, the side panel'll will be separated from its upper flap 20 and its lower flap 21 by virtue of the perforated score line 29 provided at the upper closure flap 29 and along the perforated score line 28 provided at the lower closure flap 21. It will be noted that the lower flap portion 21 will be completely severed from the panel 11 and will be retained on the stick 50 as shown in Figure 9, whereas the upper flap portion 20 will not be completely disengaged from the panel portion 11, but will remain attached thereto along the scored hinge line 29a which is not perforated. Upon further pulling and extending the panel portions in the manner shown in Figure 10, the entire carton will be removed from the block of ice cream A except that the two flap portions 21 and 23 will remain in engagement with the handle 50 and form a bottom support for the block of ice cream A. It will thus be noted that all the panel portions including all the flap portions are easily stripped or peeled from the ice cream block A and there willremain left on the block of ice cream- A onlythe two lower flaps 21 and. 23 through.
' provided with a handle for supporting and holding the ice cream while it is being consumed. The panel portions of the carton can bereadily stripped from the block of ice cream and the like without soiling the fingers and withoutrequiring any manipulative actions whatsoever except merely a single pull of the hand outwardly of the block of ice cream in one direction therefrom. As soon as the panels of the carton are stripped from the ice cream block as described, the ice creamis. readily available for consumption while supported on a convenient handle and two flap portions of the carton.
The present invention thus provides a very convenient mode of packaging ice cream, frozen sherbets, ices and the like which can be conveniently packagedwith a handle and readily consumed without requiring the use of dishes, spoons and the like. The present package can be sold in small units sufiicient for consumption at one time. The carton may of course be printed with suitable indicia, trade-marks andthe like to indicate the origin of the goods. It will be apparent that the package comprises essentially a tubular container constituted of rectangular panels which are provided with end flaps to form a top and. bottom closure A suitable tear-fiap connected to one of the side panels permits removal of all the side panels from the block of ice cream packaged therein. At the same time. the closure flaps are also stripped or removed together with. the side panels, except that two closure'flaps arev left behind in supporting relation on the handle upon which the ice' cream rests while it is being consumed.
It is to be understood that the specific description previously given is. intended. to be merely illustrative of the principles of the invention herein involved and it is to be understood that changes and. modifications may be made in the specific construction which are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
