United States Patent SLIDE ASSEMBLY F OR SLIDE LEAF EXTENSION TABLES Joseph Cooper, New York, N. Y.
Application March 13, 1956, Serial No. 571,322
3 Claims. (Cl. 311-55) The present invention relates to slide leaf extension tables, and more particularly to an improved slide assembly for such tables.
In slide leaf extension tables, the slide assembly is usually supported by a box-like frame having its sides extending around the table. This usual type of support is often unsightly, and adds considerably to the expense of constructing the table.
An object of the present invention is to provide a slide assembly for slide leaf extension tables, which eliminates the need for the usual frame supports, and consequently results in improved appearance of the table and decreased construction costs.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a slide assembly for slide leaf extension tables, in which the slide member is extended and supported from underneath the primary table top.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following specification thereof, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of the underside of a slide leaf extension table embodying the invention, a leaf extension being shown in open position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, the leaf extension being in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the slide assembly, the slide member being broken away, and being in the position of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, the slide member being in the position of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a portion of a slide leaf extension table 1, said table consisting of a primary table top 2 having attachment plates 3 for legs, and a slide leaf extension 4 at least at one end thereof. Each slide leaf extension 4 is supported and operated by one or more slide assemblies of the type shown in the drawings. Each such assembly includes a slidable bar 6 attached to the inside of the leaf extension 4 by means of screws 5. Member 6 is preferably metallic and of U-shaped cross section, the screws 5 passing through the upper side wall 7 thereof. Side wall 7 slopes downwardly and inwardly near its inner end, thereby reducing the size of member 6 to form an inner finger-like section 8 thereof. Wall 7, outwardly of its said sloping portion bears a flat rectangular locking flange 9 projecting toward the side edge of the table. A slight downward curve 10 is provided in wall 7 adjacent leaf extension 4, to compensate for the effect which flange 9 has in spacing the member 6 a short distance away from the undersurface of table top 2, when the leaf extension is in open position. Member 6 has a continuous flat bottom surface 11. A stop member 12 is provided at its inner end to prevent full withdrawal of the slide member from the assembly.
A downwardly projecting hook-shaped metallic hanger 13 is attached to the undersurface of table top 2 some distance from the end of the latter, by means of screws 14 Patented Nov. 27, 1956 passing through flange 15 at the upper end of the hanger. The hook portion of hanger 13 projects towards the side edge of the table, and provides a slideway for slide member 6. Also attached to the undersurface of table top 2, and alined with hanger 13, parallel with the side edge of the table, is a slide guide member 16. Member 16 is attached to the undersurface of the table by screws 17 passing through flange 18 extending from the top thereof. Guide member 16 comprises a transversely extending generally rectangular vertical plate 19, which is formed at its outside edge with a downwardly extending rectangular leg 20, and at its inside edge with a downwardly extending L-shaped leg 21. Member 16 at its bottom thus provides a track for slide member 6, as is most clearly shown in Fig. 5. Slide member 6, hanger 13 and guide member 16 are so designed, that the member 6 will be maintained horizontally when in either open or closed position.
A wave member 22 is attached by screws 23 to the undersurface of table top 2, a short distance to the outside of hanger 13. Member 22 comprises a strip of metal flat at its inner end, and raised away from the table undersurface at its outer end. It is disposed parallel with and to the outside of member 6, and is adapted to receive locking flange 9 between its raised end and the table undersurface.
In operating my slide extension assembly, beginning with the closed position of Fig. 2, the extension leaf is gripped by the hands and pulled outwardly. The slide member 6 will then slide in the hook portion of hanger 13, and along the track provided by the guide member 16. Hanger 13 is sufliciently deep so that the locking flange 9 will clear the wave member 22 as the slide member 6 moves outwardly. When the' extension leaf 4 has been completely withdrawn from underneath primary table top 2, it is pulled outwardly a short distance further than the end of the table top, raised to the level of the latter, and pushed inwardly to bring the extension leaf into engagement with the table top. The locking flange 9 will at the same time slide into locking engagement with the wave member 22. The position will then be that of Fig. 1.
In returning the leaf extension 4 to closed position, it is first pulled outwardly a short distance from the end of the primary table top 2, and the flange 9 is thus disengaged from wave member 22. The extension 4 is then pressed downwardly and pushed inwardly until it is in the position of Fig. 2. If desired, a tension spring 24 may be provided to pull the leaf extension 4 inwardly, one end of said spring being attached to the undersurface of the leaf extension, and the other end to the undersurface of the table top. If such a spring is employed, a stop member such as rail 25 may be attached to the table underside.
It will thus be seen that my invention provides a slide assembly which is hidden from view, and combines sim plicity of construction and ease of operation. It will be obvious that various modifications in the assembly shown in the drawings are possible within the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is: v 1. In a table having at least one slide leaf extensio attached to a primary table top, said extension being movable between an open and a closed horizontal position, a slide assembly for the movement of said slide leaf extension comprising a normally horizontal slidable bar attached at its outer end to the lower surface of said extension, said bar having a top surface which slopes inwardly and downwardly near its inner end, and then continues horizontally to provide an inner finger-like section of said bar, a downwardly extending hanger member suspended from the under surface of said table top said locking flange between its said outer end and the,
table under surface when said slide leaf extension is in open position.
