SPINNING ROPE WITH SWIVELED HANDLE Filed Jan. 6, 1955 Georyql. Sowhen INVENTOR ATTORNEYS SPINNEWG ROPE WITH SWIVELED HANDLE George L. Soreghen, Chicago, Ill. Application January 6, 1955, Serial N 0. 480,138
1 Claim. (Cl. 119153) This invention relates to spinning ropes or lariats, the primary object of the invention being to provide a spinning rope or lariat having a handle with swivel connection with the main portion of the rope, to permit the rope to be swung or spun while the handle is held rigidly in the hand of the person spinning the rope or lariat.
An important object of the invention is to provide a spinning rope of this character wherein the handle will have dvel movement with respect to the main portion of the rope to eli "inate twisting of the rope or lariat during the spinning operation, which twisting usually results in the rope becoming kinked land difficult to manipulate.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a handle and swivel connecting piece between the handle and one end of the rope, means being provided for readily securing the connecting piece to the rope.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating a spinning rope equipped with a handle and connecting piece, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through a swiveled handle and its connecting piece, the connecting piece being shown as secured to one end of a lariat.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a spinning rope or lariat is indicated generally by the reference character 5, the rope or lariat being provided with an eye 6 that is positioned over the main portion of the rope or lariat, providing a loop 7, the diameter of the loop 7 being regulated by the operator or person swinging the rope or lariat in accomplishing what is commonly known as rope spinning.
2,771,857 Patented Nov. 2?, 1956 ice The handle, which forms the essence of the present invention, is indicated by the reference character 8, the handle being elongated and rounded at its ends for convenience in handling.
Extending into one end of the handle 8 and secured thereto against movement with respect to the handle, is a swivel shank 9 which is of a length to extend slightly beyond the end of the handle 8, the swivel shank 9 being connected to the semi-spherical section It).
The connecting sleeve 11 forms an important part of the invention, and has its end 12 that connects with the semi-spherical section 10 curved to conform to the contour of the semi-spherical section 10, as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawing. It will of course be understood that the semi-spherical section 10 has swivel connection with the shank 9, to rotate thereon.
The reference character 13 indicates the rope or lariat, which is fitted into the connecting sleeve 11 and riveted against movement with respect to the connecting sleeve ll, by means of the rivet 14.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a spinning lariat which is provided with a handle not only to permit of rotation of the rope or 'lariat around the longitudinal axis of the handle but which will, at the same time, permit of a universal swinging movement of the rope or lariat with respect to the handle, to eliminate any possibility of the rope hanging and twisting to defeat the swinging or spinning action, particularly when performing tricks with a lasso or lariat.
It will be seen that with applicants invention, a person does not have to be skilled in the art of spinning a lasso or lariat in order to accomplish the result obtained by spinning a l'ariat.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A lariat comprising a rope having one end thereof formed into a loop, a handle for effecting manipulation of said lariat, a swivel connection between the other end of said rope and handle, comprising a shank having a reduced end, fitted in said handle, a semi-spherical member mounted on said reduced end of said shank, an elongated sleeve connected with the end of the rope opposite to said loop, said semi-spherical member being fitted within one end of said sleeve, portions of said sleeve being fitted around said semi-spherical member providing an opening of a diameter substantially greater than the diameter of the reduced end of said shank, and through which the reduced end of the shank extends, providing a controlled universal swivel movement between said sleeve and semi-spherical member.
