The present invention relates to gas valves and especially to so-called double gas valves, i. e., valves used with gas burners each having two burner sections and wherein the double valve controls the supply of gas to both sections. Burners of this type are called double burners and one of the burner sections is called the main burner and the other is called the simmer burner.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved gas valve for a double gas burner providing desired operating conditions including a regulatable supply of gas to both burners, a large quantity of gas to the simmer burner only, a regulatable supply to the simmer burner only, and a predetermined low quantity of gas to the simmer burner only.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a double gas valve of the characteristics set forth in the preceding paragraph wherein the selective supply of a predetermined low quantity of gas to the simmer burner only is determined by a rotatable valve member but the quantity is determined by the construction of gas passageways, whereby the valve can be made readily and simply and the passageways are not likely to become clogged with grease during use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved double gas valve having the operative positions hereinbefore mentioned constructed and arranged to provide a predetermined minimum rate of gas to the simmer burner only, such as 300 B. t. u. per hour (at any valve position from full on to low simmer), which eliminates the bypass or carry-over port ordinarily used in valves of this type, and which eliminates nonradial drillings in and elongated passageways on the surface of the valve plug.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved double gas valve operable `into a position in which a low and predetermined quantity of gas is supplied to the simmer burner only through a passageway open to the axially open passageway in a valve plug, and which passageway includes either Xed or adjustable orifice defining means for predetermining the low quantity of gas.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved double gas valve constructed and arranged to provide an improved turndown operation both when gas is supplied to both simmer and main burner outlet passageways and to the simmer outlet passageway only.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved valve of the character set forth in the preceding paragraph in which the control' or regulation of gas flow takes place at the outlet side of a rotatable valve element and, furthermore, in which a single gas flow restricting means is utilized to provide a minimum ow to the simmer burner outlet passageway in two different ranges of operation, whereby maintenance i i rice of ignition at the simmer burner is insured until it is desired to turn the valve to its off position.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved double gas valve so constructed and arranged as to provide a selective supply of a xed predetermined or an adjustable predetermined quantity of gas to the simmer burner section of a double gas burner.
ln brief, the valve of the present invention includes a valve body and a movable control element such as a valve plug rotatably mounted within a chamber in the body. The body is provided with main and simmer burner outlet passageways and a gas inlet passageway. The body and plug have a system of passageways therein and therebetween connecting the gas inlet passageway to the outlet passageways. Specifically, the system is such that the plug can be rotated to 1) a full on position inwhieh gas is supplied at a high rate to both main and simmer outlet passageways, (2) a full simmer position in which gas is supplied at a high rate to the simmer outlet passageway only, (3) a low simmer position in which gas is supplied at a low predetermined rate to the simmer burner only, and (4) an olf position. Also, the arrangement is such that the gas flow to both the main and simmer outlet passageways or to the simmer burner only can be turned down in two different turn down ranges. The system includes a passageway including a flow restricting oriiice providing the simmer burner outlet with the predetermined minimum` quantity of gas at the low ends of the two turn down ranges, while the throttling or regulation of ow to the burner outlets takes place in other passageway means connecting the outlet passageways and at the outlets from the valve chamber rather than the inlet to the valve chamber. Accordingly, a simplified and effective arrangement is provided for regulating the ow of gas and at the same time for maintaining ignition of the simmer burner when the valve is operated to the simmer burner only position from a position in which gas is supplied to both burner outlet passageways. A desirable arrangement for the ilow restricting passageway is to construct it so that it continuously connects the inlet passageway to the simmer burner outlet passageway in the various operative positions of the valve.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing descriptionof an illustrative embodiment thereof, in the course of which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is an enlarged top plan View, partly broken away, of a double gas valve constructed in accordance with the present invention, the valve being illustrated in its full on position;

Referring now to the drawings and first to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the double gas valve of the present invention is indicated as a whole by reference character 3i?. It comprises a valve body 32 having a chamber 34 with a conical inner surface 36, within which is mounted a movable control member illustrated as a tapered or conical valve plug 38.
Gas is supplied to the valve from any suitable source such as the gas manifold 40, The valve body is provided with an inlet passageway 1 formed within an externally threaded boss 42 utilized in securing the valve tothe manifold. The inlet passageway 1 is radial rela- Ytive to the longitudinal axis of the valve plug and the body is also provided with radial passageways 2 and 3 through which gas is supplied to the main and simmer burner sections, respectively, through outlet passageways 44 and 50. The outlet passageway 2 communicates with the axially extending outlet passageway 44 and terminating in an externally threaded boss 46 to which is secured an adjustable hood 48 which predetermines the maximum quantity of gas supplied in the full on position to the main burner section, not shown, in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. The passageway 3 communicates with a smaller and generally axially extending passageway 23 in the valve body which in turn communicates with the simmer burner outlet passageway Y50 formed in a second externally threaded boss 52, at the end of which is mounted an adjustable hood 54 which predetermines the maximum quantity of gas supplied to the simmer burner section (not shown) in the full on and full simmer positions. All the passageways mentioned are readily formed as by drilling the valve body. The passageways 2 and 3 can readily be drilled from the outside of the valve body and the outer ends of these passageways can readily be closed as by vplugs 56.
In accordance with the present invention, the system of passageways connecting the inlet and outlet passageways includes a further passageway 25 provided with a cup- -like insert 58 having a small orifice 60 which is utilized to predetermine the quantity of gas supplied to the simmer burner section in the low simmer position of the valve and at other positions to be noted hereinafter, In the illustrated embodiment the passageway 25 connects the chamber 34 to the simmer burner outlet passageway 50. The valve plug is provided with an axially extending passageway open at its inner end to the valve chamber 34. It is also provided with three radial passageways 11, 12 and 13, which as best illustrated in Fig. 2, are
Valigned with the inlet passageway 1 and the passageways 2 and 3 in the full on position of the valve plug. All these passageways can be made readily by drilling operations when the valve plug is assembled in the valve body.
The valve plug is movable between its various positions in suitable manner as by a valve stem 62 having a fiat 64 on one side. A handle can be readily secured to the valve stem. The Hat faces upwardly in the full on position of the valve and in the present embodiment, in which the valve plug is rotatable through 180, the flat faces down in the oif position. These positions and other operative positions of the valve are indicated by the arrows 66 in Figs. 2 to 5, inclusive, the arrow facing in the direction of the ilat.
The various positions of the valve may be indicated to the user in conventional manner as by a position indicating and determining washer 68 encircling the valve stem and biased against an end cap 70 by a spring 72 which also serves to hold the valve plug within the valve chamber. The full on position of the valve may be indicated by engagement of a radial projection 74 on the washer 68 with a shoulder 76 formed in the valve body. The off position can be similarly indicated by engagement of the projection with another shoulder (not shown) while the other positions, namely the full simmer and low simmer, can be otherwise indicated by the washer 68 and cooperating indicating mechanism forming no part of the present invention.
As hereinbefore indicated, the valve of the present invention is operative into a plurality of positions. These are indicated in Figs. 2 and 2a; 3 and 3a; 4 and 4a; and 5 and 5a, which indicate the valve in its full on, full simmer, low simmer and ofl` positions; and the additional turndown ranges, not shown, but described hereinafter, in which regulatable quantities of gas are supplied to both the main and simmer sections and to the simmer section alone.
In the full on position, the inlet passageway 1 cornmunicates with the axial passageway 10 in the valve plug through the plug passageway 11. Gas is supplied to the main burner section through the passageways 12, 2, 44 and the hood 48. Gas is supplied at the same time to the simmer burner section through passageways 13, 3, 23, 50 and hood 54. A small quantity of gas flows to the simmer burner section through the axial passageway 16, valve chamber 34, low simmer outlet passageway 25, orice 60 and the passageway 50 and hood 54, but this quantity is small compared to the full flow through the first mentioned passageways to the simmer burner section.
In the full simmer position, the supply of gas to the main burner is cut off and gas is supplied to the simmer burner section only. The gas flows to the simmer burner section from the gas inlet 1, the passageways 12, 10, 11, 3, 23, 50 and hood 54. Some gas again ows through the low simmer passageway 25 and orice 60 but again this supply is small.
In the low simmer position, a low and predetermined quantity of gas iiows to the simmer burner section only through the low simmer outlet passageway 25, the flow being predetermined now by the size of the oriiice 60 in the insert 58. The flow is from the gas inlet passageway 1 through passageways 12, 10, chamber 34, passageway 25, orifice 60 in insert 58, and passageway 50.
In the off position, the gas inlet passageway is entirely closed off by the valve plug so that no gas flows to either burner section, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5
The valve of the present invention also provides a uniform turndown of gas `to both ythe main and simmer burner sections as the valve is operated from its full on position of Fig. 2 to the full simmer position of Fig. 3. This uniform turndown is effected by a gradual closure of -the outlet ports 2 and 3, as well as the inlet passageway 1, the arrangement being such, though, that the outlet ports are closed before the inlet port so that throttling occurs at the outlet ports. The inlet passageway, however, is not closed until passageway 12 begins to register with the inlet passageway 1 whereby gas is supplied through the axial passageway 10 at the end of the turndown range and just prior to the full simmer condition being set up. Accordingly, gas is supplied to the simmer burner section through the low simmer outlet passageway 25, which thus operates as a carry-over or bypass port insuring an adequate and constant supply of gas to maintain ignition in going over from the supply of gas to both -burners to the full supply of gas to the simmer burner only.
There is also provided a regulatable supply of gas to the simmer burner only when going from the full simmer position of Fig.. 3 to the low simmer position of Fig. 4. This regulation is provided, as indicated earlier, by gradual closure of the outlet passageway.
It should perhaps be mentioned that while the passageways 1, 2 and 3 and 11, 12 and 13 appear to be generally of the same size, they are of slightly different dimension for the last mentioned passageways is to insure they having a diameter of about .218". The passageways 2 and 12 have a diameter of about .204" while the passageways 3 andl 13 are the smallest, they having a diameter of about .187. The reason for the smallest dimension for the last mentioned passageways is to insure the simmer section passageway turning out of registry first so it will reach low tourndown before the main section and to obtain throttling at the outlet. The arrangement provides throttling not only at the simmer burner outlet but also at the main burner outlet.
From the foregoing detailed description of the first embodiment of the present invention it will be noted that the valve is simple to construct and operate and provides desired operating conditions, and furthermore is of such character that there is insured an adequate supply of gas to maintain ignition of the simmer burner section in the operating range between low simmer and full on. The arrangement furthermore is such that the low simmer is not likely to become clogged in use, this resulting from the fact that there are no small passages at the bearing surfaces of the plug and valve body which are likely to become clogged in use. Not only is ignition maintained at the simmer burner but good turndown operating characteristics are obtained.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 6 is in many respects similar to that already described. It `differs in that the low simmer insert, which predetermines the quantity of gas supplied to the simmer burner in the low simmer position of the valve, is located in the axial passageway 10 in the Valve plug 38. The insert is indicated by the reference character 80 and it has an orifice 82. Also, the passageway 50 is continued directly into the valve chamber 34 so as to communicate with it. In this construction the passageway 10 also goes entirely through the valve plug so that but one drilling operation is necessary. The outer or stem end of the passageway is closed by an imperforate cup-like insert 84.
The operation of the valve of Fig. 6 is the same as that of the Figs. l to with the exception that in the low simmer position gas ows to the simmer burner section only from the inlet passageway 1 through passageway 12, the orifice 82 in the insert mounted in passageway 10, chamber 34, the outlet passageway 50 and the hood 54. The valve thus has the advantages in construction and operation of the previously described embodiment.
The embodiment of the Valve illustrated in Fig. 7 is similar to that of Fig. 6. The insert (indicated by reference character 90) for predetermining the iiow of gas in the ylow simmer position, is, however, placed in the valve plug passageway 10 after assembly of the valve. In this Way the insert can be chosen to fit the particular requirements of a customer and assembled after receipt of the customers order. The insert has the fixed orice 92 but its position is reversed from that of Fig. 6 so that it can readily be inserted into the valve plug from the outlet end. In order to permit this to be done the housing 32 'is provided with an opening 94 through which the insert can be inserted into the valve plug. After insertion the opening is closed by the plug 96.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Fig. 8, to which reference is now had, is similar to that of Fig. l except that it provides adjustable means for predetermining the ow of gas to the simmer burner in the low simmer position of the valve. In order to do this there is provided a low simmer outlet passageway 100 in which is mounted adjustable auxiliary valve means 102 for predetermining the low simmer flow of gas. The auxiliary valve 102 isreadily mounted as by insertion in the transversely extending passageway 100 leading from the exterior of the body of the valve into the valve chamber 34. rIhe'valvecornprises two parts, one being the fixed tubu- Cil lar part 104 secured as by a press tit in the passageway 102, and the -other a rotatable element 106 mounted in part 104. The rotatable element is provided with an enlarged head 108 having a screw driver slot 110 in it whereby it can be rotated. The rotatable element is provided with an axial passageway 112 lopen to chamber 34. The two parts are provided with radial passageways 114 and 116, the registry of which can be varied to determine the effective size of the low simmer orifice and thus the flow of gas in the low simmer position. The passageway 116 in the fixed part of the valve leads to an annular groove 118 which communicates with the outlet passageway 50 through a passageway 120. The auxiliary valve itself forms no part of the present invention, it being disclosed and claimed in the copending application of Vincent C. Peterson, Serial No. 600,795, filed June 2l, 1945 (now Patent No. 2,590,569) to which reference may be had for further details.
From the foregoing detailed description of Fig. 8 it can be noted that the arrangement is simple and effective in construction and operation and that the low simmer dow adjusting means is easily accessible for predetermining the flow of gas in the low simmer position.
The embodiment of Fig. 9 provides a selective supply of fixed or adjustable quantities of' gas to the simmer burner section. Referring now to the figure it may be noted that the valve chamber 34 is connected to the sirnmer burner outlet passageway 50 through a low simmer outlet passageway including the portions and 132 which are interconnected by a chamber 134 above which is an internally threaded enlarged recess 136. A low simmer flow predetermining valve means 138 is mounted in the recess 134 and this valve means is movable between the position indicated in which the low simmer ilow is iixedly predetermined by the size of the orifice 140 in the cup-like insert 142 mounted in an axial counterbore 144 in the valve body 146. The flow of gas in the indicated position is from the valve chamber 34 to the simmer burner outlet passageway 50 through passageway 130, orifice 140, counterbore 144, a. radial opening 148 leading from the counterbore to recess 134, and passageway 132 leading to passageway 50. This type of operation is preferred for bottled gas. For other types of gases the valve body 144 can be lifted so that the gas ow is primarily between the lower end 150 of the valve body and the conical end portion 152 of the recess 134. The valve body can readily be lifted by a suitable tool such as a screw driver engageable in the screw driver slot 154 at the upper end of the externally threaded head 156 of the valve body. The valve 13S is normally covered by a cap screw 158 which also `serves additionally to seal the valve against leakage.
While the present invention has been described in connection with the details of several illustrative embodiments it should be understood that these details are not intended to be limitative of the invention except insofar as set forth in the accompanying claims.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A valve for supplying high and low quantities of gas to a burner, including a Valve body having a valve chamber and a pair of burner outlet passageways and a gas inlet passageway, and a valve element rotatably mounted in said chamber, and saidl body and element including a system of passageways for controlling the flow of gas from said inlet to said outlet passageways, said system comprising axial and transverse passageways in said element connecting said inlet passageway to one of said outlet passageways in different angular ranges of said rotatable valve element and also to the other of said outlet passageways in one of said ranges and variably controlling the supply of gas to said outlet passageways, and other passageway defining means including a single gas ow predetermining restricting orice eiectively at the outlet side of the axial passageway of said rotatable valve element for connecting said 7 inlet passageway to said one outlet passageway in said different ranges and supplying said one outlet passageway with a small quantity of gas predeterminable by said orificein each of said different ranges.
2. A gas valve for a double burner comprising main and simmer burner sections, including a body having a plug rcceiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber for movement from an off position sequentially to low simmer, full simmer and full on positions, and vice versa, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways and an inlet passageway leading to the plug surface, said plug'having an axial open ended passageway and transverse passageways leading from said axial opening to the plug surface, said transverse passageways in the plug being aligned with the passageways in the valve body in the full on position of the valve wherein a large quantity of gas is supplied to both outlet passageways, said body including a further passageway connecting the chamber and the axial passageway in the plug with the simmer burner outlet passageway and containing a flow restricting orifice, said valve being operable in one direction from said full on position toward the full simmer position and the positional arrangement and dimensions of said inlet and outlet passageways being such that as the plug is so .operated the flow of gas is throttled at both the outlet passageways and the flow to the simmer burner outlet passageway is decreased'to a minimum determined by the size of said orifice, the positional arrangement and dimensions also being such that further movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in reduction and stoppage of flow to the main burner outlet passageway and in the iiow of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway only to provide the full simmer position, and that continued movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in the gradual closure of the registry of the transverse passageway in the plug with said simmer burner outlet passageway while the axial passageway in said plug remains in communication with the inlet passageway whereby the flow of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway is gradually decreased to a minimum determined by said orifice.
3. A gas valve for a double burner comprising main and simmer burner sections, including a body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber for movement from an off position sequentially to low simmer, full simmer and full on positions, and vice versa, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways and an inlet passageway leading to the plug bearing surface, said plug having an axial passageway open at the inner end of the plug and transverse passageways leading from said axial opening to the plug surface,
`a cup-like insert with a fiow restricting orifice therein mounted at the inner end of said plug, said cup-like insert being insertable into said plug through an opening in the valve body, said transverse passageways in the plug being `aligned with the passageways in the valve body in the full on position of the valve wherein a large quantity of gas is supplied to both outlet passageways, the chamber and the axial passageway in the plug being connected with Y said simmer burner outlet passageway, said valve being operable in one direction from said full on position toward the full simmer position and the positional arrangement of said inlet and outlet passageways being such that as the plug is so operated the iiow of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway is throttled and stopped at the bearing surface between the plug and body and the flow to the simmer burner outlet passageway is decreased to a minimum determined by the size of said orifice, the positional arrangement being'such that further movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in reduction and cutol of gas tlow tothe main burner outlet passageway and in the flow of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway only to provide a full simmer position, and that continued movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in the gradual closure of said transverse passageway leading to said simmer burner outlet passageway while the axial passageway in said plug remains in communication with the inlet passageway whereby the flow of lgas to the simmer burner outlet passageway is gradually decreased to a minimum determined by said orifice.
4, A gas valve for a double burner comprising main and simmer burner sections, including a body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber, said body having a gas inlet, a main outlet passageway and a simmer burner outlet passageway extending radially of and into said chamber, said plug having corresponding passageways aligning with said passageways in the body in a full on position of the valve, said plug also having an axial open-ended passageway with which said corresponding passageways in the plug intersect, other main and simmer outlet passageway portions leading from said radial main and simmer burner passageways, said radial main and simmer Outlet passageway in the body being angularly spaced on either side of the inlet passageway, in such a way that the inlet passageway, where it intersects the chamber, is always in communication with the axial plug passageway, until a final off position is reached, a communicating passageway having a small flow restricting orifice therein continuously connecting the axial passageway in said plug to said mentioned portion of the simmer outlet passageway, the radial simmer outlet passageways in the plug and body being of smaller size than, and displaced axially in relation` to, the inlet and main outlet passageways, so that on rotation of the plug in one direction from its full on position, the gas supply through the radial simmer outlet passageway is reduced and stopped with gas continuing to iiow at a reduced rate to the simmer burner outlet passageway through the said axial and communicating passageways as limited by the restricting orifice, that upon continued plug rotation in said one direction the gas supply to the main burner outlet passageway is reduced and stopped and thereafter the radial simmer outlet passageway in the body again receives full gas supply from the axial plug passageway upon partial registry of the plug passageway first described as aligned with the body inlet passageway, that upon further turning of the plug `in said one direction the full gas supply to the simmer outlet passageway is reduced and stopped while gas continues to flow at reduced rate to the simmer burner outlet passageway through` the said axial and communicating passageways as limited by the restricting orifice, and that upon further turning of the plug in said one direction the inlet passageway is closed in an off position of the valve.

A gas valve for a double burner comprisingmain and simmer burner sections, including a body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways and an inlet passageway, said plug and body having a system of passageways therein and therebetween for selectively connecting said gas inlet passageway with one or both outlet passageways in different rotary positions of the plug, one passageway of said system having a gas ow restricting orifice therein, said system of passageways comprising passageways including said one passageway connecting the inlet passageway only to the simmer burner outlet passageway in one rotary position of said plug, whereby in said one position all the gas flows through said orifice to supply the simmer burner outlet passageway with a small quantity of gas, said system comprising also passageways connecting the inlet passageway only to the simmer burner outlet passageway in a second rotary position of said plug to sup' ply a greater quantity of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway, and said system including further passageways connecting said inlet passageway to both main and simmer burner outlet passageways in a third rotary position of said plug to supply a large quantity of gas to both outlet passageways, the passageways, including said one passageway, also providing a turndown of gas ow to the simmer burner outlet passageway from a high rate to a low rate determined by said orifice as the plug is turned from said second position toward said first position and from said third position toward said second position, certain of said passageways also providing further a turndown of gas to the main burner outlet passageway as the plug is turned from said third position toward said second position and the passageways in the plug and body being so positioned that the turndown in gas flow is obtained by a throttling action at the outlets from the valve plug.

A double gas valve for a double burner comprising main and simmer burner sections, including in combination, a valve body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber for movement from an off into different operative positions, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways with transverse portions opening into said chamber at substantially opposite sides angularly of said chamber and a single inlet passageway opening into said chamber at a point angularly substantially intermediate the points wherein said portions open into said chamber, said outlet passageways having discharge portions communicating with said transverse portions and disposed at opposite sides of and parallel to the axis of said chamber, means including a system of passageways in said plug and body for selectively connecting said gas inlet passageway to only said simmer burner outlet passageway or to both outlet passageways in different operative positions of the plug, said system comprising an open ended axial passageway in said plug communicating with an end of the body charnber and transverse passageways in said plug leading from said axial passageway to the chamber wall and of which certain passageways are substantially aligned with said inlet passageway and said transverse portions of both outlet passageways in a first and full on position of said valve plug whereby gas is supplied to both outlet passageways at a high rate, means including certain of said passageways in the plug for supplying gas at a high rate to only the simmer burner outlet passageway in a second and full simmer position of the valve plug, and means including certain of said passageways in the plug and another passageway of the system continuously connecting the said end of said body chamber to the discharge portion of said simmer burner outlet passageway and including an orifice for connecting said inlet to said simmer burner outlet passageway and supplying gas at a low rate predeterminable by said orifice to only the simmer burner outlet passageway in a third and low simmer position of the Valve plug, and means including certain of the passageways in said plug and the said one passageway and the orifice therein for providing a turn-down of gas flow to the simmer burner outlet passageway from said high rate to the low rate predeterminable by said orifice as the valve plug is moved from said first position to said second position and from said second position to said third position, and certain of said passageways providing, further, a turn-down of gas to the main burner outlet passageway as the plug is turned from said first position toward said second position, said simmer passageways in the plug and body which are aligned in said full on position being smaller than the other aligned passageways whereby the flow of gas to the simmer outlet passageway is turned down before the flow to the main outlet passageway, and the axial passageway in the plug being connected to the inlet passageway in the operative positions of the plug whereby the gas supplied to the simmer burner outlet passageway through the orifice is substantially constant and readily predeterminable to maintain ignition of the simmer burner section of the double burner.

A double gas valve for a double burner comprising main and simmer burner sections, including in combination, a valve body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber for movement from an 01T into different operative positions, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways with portions opening into said chamber at substantially opposite sides angularly of said chamber and a single inlet passageway opening into said chamber at a point angularly substantially intermediate the points wherein said portions open into said chamber, means including a systern of passageways in said plug and body for selectively connecting said gas inlet passageway to only said simmer burner outlet passageway or to both outlet passageways in different operative positions of the plug, said system comprising an axial passageway in said plug and transverse passageways in said plug leading from said axial passageway to the chamber wall and of which certain passageways are substantially aligned with said inlet passageway and both outlet passageways -in a first and full on position of said valve plug whereby gas is supplied to both outlet passageways at a high rate, means including certain of said passageways in the plug for supplying gas at a high rate to only the simmer burner outlet passageway in a second and full simmer position of the valve plug, and means including certain of said passageways in the plug and another passageway of the system including an orifice located effectively at the outlet side of said axial passageway for connecting said inlet to said simmer burner outlet passageway and supplying gas at a low rate predeterminable by said orifice `to only the simmer lburner outlet passageway in a third and low simmer position of the valve plug, and means including certain of the passageways in said plug and the said one passageway and the orifice therein for providing a turn-down of gas ow to the simmer burner outlet passageway from said high rate to the low rate predeterminable by said orifice as the valve plug is moved from said first position to said second position and from said second position to said third position, and certain of said passageways providing, further, a turn-down and stoppage of gas to the main burner `outlet passageway as the plug is turned from said first position toward said second position, and the axial passageway in the plug being connected to the inlet passageway -in the operative positions of the plug whereby the gas supplied to the simmer burner outlet passageway through the orifice is substantially constant and readily predeterminable to maintain ignition of the simmer burner section of the double burner..
8. A double gas valve as claimed in claim 6 wherein said orifice is located in the valve body between said end of the chamber and said parallel portion of the simmer burner outlet passageway discharge portion.
9. A double gas valve as claimed in claim 6 wherein said orifice is located in the axial passageway in the plug adjacent the end opening into said chamber.

A gas Valve for a double burner comprising main and simmer burner sections, including a body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber for movement from an off position sequentially to low simmer, full simmer and full on positions, and vice versa, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways and an inlet passageway leading to the plug surface, said plug having an axial open ended passageway and transverse passageways leading from said axial opening to the plug surface, said transverse passageways in the plug being aligned with the passageways in the Valve body in the full on position of the valve wherein a large quantity of gas is supplied to both outlet passageways, further passageway means connecting the chamber and the axial passageway in the plug with the simmer burner outlet passageway and containing a flow restricting orifice, said valve being operable in one direction from said full on position toward the full simmer position and the positional arrangement and dimensions ofi' said inlet and outlet passageways being such that as the plug is so operated the fiow of gas is throttled at both the outlet passageways and the flow to the simmer burner outlet passageway is decreased to a minimum determined by the size of said orifice, the positional arrangement and dimensions also being such that further movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in reduction and stoppage of flow to the main burner outlet passageway and in the flow of gas to simmer burner outlet passageway only to provide the full simmer position, and that continued movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in the gradual closure of the registry of the transverse passageway in the plug with said simmer burner outlet; passageway while the axial passageway in said plug remains in communication with the inlet passageway whereby the flow of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway is gradually decreased to a minimum determined by said orice.

A gas valve for a double burner `comprising main and simmer burner sections, including a body having a plug receiving chamber, a plug rotatably mounted in said chamber for movement from an oil position sequentially to low simmer, full simmer and full on positions, and vice versa, said body having main and simmer burner outlet passageways and an inlet passageway leading to the plug surface, said plug having an axial passageway and transverse passageways leading from said axial opening to the plug surface, said transverse passageways in the plug being aligned with the passageways in the valve body in the full on position of the valve wherein a large quantity of gas is supplied to both outlet passageways, further passageway means connecting the axial passageway in the plug with the simmer burner outlet passageway and containing a ow restricting orifice, said valve being operable in one direction from said full on position toward the full simmer position and the positional arrangement and dimensions of said inlet and outlet passageways being such that as the plug is so operated the flow of gas is throttled at both the outlet passageways and the flow to the simmer burner outlet passageway is decreased to a minimum determined by the size of said orice, the positional arrangement and dimensions also being such that further movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in reduction and stoppage of flow to the main burner outlet passageway and in the iiow of gas to simmer burner outlet passageway only to provide the full simmer position, and that continued movement of the valve plug in said one direction results in the gradual closure of the registry of the transverse passageway in the plug with said simmer burner outlet passageway while the axial passageway in said plug remains in communication with the inlet passageway whereby the flow of gas to the simmer burner outlet passageway is gradually decreased to a minimum determined by said orice.
l2. A gas valve as claimed in claim 2, wherein said flow restricting orifice is constituted by auxiliary valve means selectively operable to provide for the flow of a predetermined xed or adjustable ow of gas through said passageway.
