Description

UNITED STATEASTENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM COOPER, OF MOUNT GILEAD, OHIO.
DIRT-LOADING APPARATUS FOR EXCAVATORS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 27,699, dated April 3, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM COOPER, of Mount Gilead, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Loading Dirt into Vagons and Carts &c., or for Ditching and Throwing Up Roads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clea'r, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in arranging those parts of the machine which will be particularly described, substantially as will be set forth.
In the annexed drawings Figure l represents a side elevation. Fig. 2. represents a plan view.
In the figures A represents a beam to the forwai'd end of which is secured a plow B, and trough C. The plow is provided with two land sides one of which is secured to the beam, and the other, to one .side of the trough C, as is seen in Fig. 2. The rear end of the beam is sustained by an axle D, which passes through, and is supported by two wheels I?, F.
Il, represents a bar, one end of which rests upon the axle, D. This bar runs parallel #ith the beam, but is shorter and is connectcd at its forward end with the beam by means of a cross bar H. Upon the beam and the bar, I-I, are erected four standards, (two on each,) which support a frame, in which a shaft, a, has its bearings. This shaft lies across the frame and is made square with the exception of its journals, and the width of a pulley (which slides over it,) at its center. These parts are made round.
c, represents a sliding pulley which passes over the shaft a, said pulley being provided with a square hole through it, made of such size as to lit snugly over the shaft A band, Ii, passes around a pulley on the axle I), and over the pulley c, for the purpose of communicating motion to said pulley c.
ai, represents' a pulley near the forward end of the trough C. Band E, passes around pulley fo, and-then around pulley c, forming a continuous belt, the upper side of which is supported by means of a series of rollers, ml m// ne trough t., is inclined as is shown its lower end being secured to the plow B, and its upper end resting over the pulley c. The belt or band E, forms the bottom of this trough, and when the machine is set in motion, the band travels backward, and thus conveys the dirt or earth from the plow up the trough and elevates it at the back of the machine to be dropped into a cart or wagon placed to receive it.
I do notcontend that carrying the dirt or earth back by means of a belt is new, but it will be seen that the pulley c, over which the rear of the band passes, is made to slide to one side or the other of the shaft a, as' it may be desired, for the purpose of emptying the earth to one side or the other of the machine.
The trough moves with the pulley c, at its rear end, and may be made to empty the earth into carts or wagons, or it may be made to empty it to one side of the ditch which the plow may be making.
The sliding pulley o, when used in connection with the trough, band, and plow, for the purpose of directing the discharge of the earth constitutes the principal feature of my invention. I am aware that the dirt, etc. has been carried ofi1 and emptied in other ways, but these I disclaim, confining myself to the particular' manner herein shown.
Having thus fully described by invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the square shaft a, with the sliding pulley, c, trough C, band E, pulley m, and plow B, the several parts being arranged together substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
IVM. COOPER.
