UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT S. WATSON, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
KNOB ATTACH M `ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,942, dated May 1, 1883.
i Application sied october 26, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, R. S. WATSON, of Bay City, in the county ot' Bay and State ofMichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DoorfKnobs; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description o t' theinventon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speeitihation.
My invention relates to an improvement in door-knobs; and it consists in the combination ofthe knob, having an opening through its center, with aserew, which is passed through the knob and swiveled therein, either by means of' a washer or by spreading the screw, whereby the screw is allowed a rotary but no end- `wise movement, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object oi" myinvention is to provide a means for positively adjusting the knob upon the spindle, so as to adjust the knob to the exact thickness ofthe door. Y
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the knob. Fig. 2 is a detail view.
A represents a knob, which may be made of any suitable material, and which has the socket B formed upon its inner side, so as to receive the end ofthe spindle. Passed through the j cen-ter of this knob is the screw C, which will l preferably have a conical head, made to lit a correspondinglyshaped seat in the knob. This screw has a washer, D, passed over its inner end, and then the screw is attened or otherwise spread just above the washer to holdthe washer in position at the inner end ofthe socket. If so desired, the washer may be dispensed with and the screw itself spread at the.
inner end of the socket, whereby the screw is allowed to be turned freely around, butis prevented from having an endwise movement through the knob. The spindle to which the knob is to be secured has ascrew-socket formed in its end, and into which a screw is turned. AS the screw is turned either back or forth the knob is adjusted endwise upon the spindle, so as to bring the inner end ofthe socket nearer to or farther from the surface of the door.
I am well aware that a screw has been passed through .the knob into the spindle; but in no case has the screw been swiveled in the knob7 as is here shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claimrIhe combination of the door-knob having an opening through its center, a screw which is passed through the knob and provided with a suitable stop, substantially as shown, for preventing the screw from moving end wise through the knob, with the spindle, whereby the knob can be adjusted back and forth upon therend of the spindle, substantially as described.
In testimony whercof Iaix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROB ERT STEWART WATSON.
