7 Claims. (Cl. 2424) This invention relates to a polish rod holder and has as its primary object the provision of such a holder which is adapted securely to clamp a polishing rod, and which may be readily adjusted to a variety of sizes of polishing rods.
As conducive to a clearer understanding of this invention, it may here be pointed out that in oil well pumping installations of the ordinary standard rig type there is provided an engine for operating a walking beam to actuate a pump, through a polish rod, the polish rod extending through a stufliing box. An important object of this invention is, therefore, the provision of such a polish rod clamp which will securely attach and hold a rod and which may be substantially immediately released or engaged, and which is adapted to a wide variety of sizes of polish rods.
Still other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the clamp of the instant invention comprises two identical sub-assemblies, each generally indicated at 10, and each sub-assembly is comprised of two identical but oppositely disposed side plates 11 rigidly and permanently connected by identical end plates 12, in spaced apart relation. Each side plate 11 includes opposed flat surfaces 13, and oppositely inclined opposite outer surfaces 14. One inclined end 15 is provided with a rectangular cutout 16, and the opposite end is provided with a slot forming two extending tongues 17, the purpose of which will be described more fully hereinafter. The end plates 12 comprise substantially rectangular blocks, provided with semi-circular grooves 21), there being provided two grooves in opposite alignment on opposite sides of each plate. The grooves are adapted to align with corresponding transversely extending grooves 21 which extend across the central portion of each of members 11. While the members 11 have been heretofore described as being identical, it is to be noted that each of grooves 29 is of different diameter, so that when the two sub-assemblies 10 are in assembled relation the coinciding grooves 20 and 21 will form an aperture of a given diameter in order to accommodate a variety of different sizes of polish rods.
Each of tapered members 19 is provided with a pair of aligned bores 22 extending through tongues 17 for the reception of cotter pins 23, for a purpose to be more fully described hereinafter.
Adapted to be slidably positioned between each pair of members 11 is a pair of lever bars 25, each provided with a slotted extremity, the slot being indicated at 26, and forming two tongues 27. Bores 28 for the reception of cotter pins 29 extend through each pair of tongues 27.
At the opposite end of lever bars 25 there are provided aligned bores 30 having countersunk extremities 31 for the reception of a bolt 32 having a head 33, the head being of irregular or polygonal configuration and in conformity to the configuration of the countersunk portion 31 in order to preclude rotation thereof. A washer 34 and nut 35 are adapted to engage the end of bolt 32 opposite head 33.
A connecting link, generally indicated at 38 includes two cylindrical heads 39 extending an equal distance on opposite sides of a connecting bar id having an elongated slot 41 disposed longitudinally thereof.
In the assembly of the device the link 38 extends between the tongues 27, with the heads 39 thereof seating in the recesses 16, the cotter pins 23 extending through the bores 22 and the slot 41, serving to hold the parts in related assembly.
The cotter pins 29 serve to prevent the complete with drawal of the lever harsZ-S from their adjusted position between the oppositely disposed side planes id of sub-assemblies it). By sliding the lever bars rearwardly as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, it will be apparent that the degree of leverage exerted by the bars may be extended, such motion being permitted by the length of recess 15 and its engagement with the cylindrical heads 39 of connecting link 33.
In the use and operation of the device, it is to be understood that a clamping action on a rod, 50, may be effected merely by tightening the nut 35 to the requisite degree to occasion tilting of the lever bars 25 and consequently the sub-assemblies it) towards each other to effect a clamping engagement of the appropriate semi-circular grooves 29 and 21 about the rod 59.
Stop blocks 51 are provided adjacent the rear end of each lever member 25, and are adapted for engagement with the inner elongated end of the associated member 11, it being pointed out that regardless of the position of the sub-assemblies 11) the elongated end 15 of the member 14 is on the inner side in abutting relation with the inner surfaces of each member 25.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved polish rod clamp which serves securely to hold a polish rod in related assembly and thus accomplishes all of the objects of this invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
From a consideration of Pig. 5 it will also be readily apparent that merely by removal of cotter pins 23 and 29 the clamps may be reversed relative to the lever bars 25 in such manner as to juxtapo-se semi-circular grooves 24 of different diameter, thus affording a relatively wide variety of sizes of polish rods which may be secured by the clamp.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod.
2. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod, said last mentioned means comprising a bolt extending through said opposite ends of said lever members and a nut on said bolt.
3. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod, said clamping members being substantially identical but having grooves of different diameters on the outer faces thereof whereby said members may be reversed relative to said lever bars.
4. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod, said last mentioned means comprising a bolt extending through said opposite ends and a nut on said bolt, said clamping members being substantially identical but having grooves of different diameters on the outer faces thereof whereby said members may be reversed relative to said lever bars.
5. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod
clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod, said clamping members having apertures in opposite ends thereof, and said connecting link including cylindrical end portions movably seating in said apertures whereby said lever members may be moved longitudinally relative to said clamping members.
6. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod, said last mentioned means comprising a bolt extending through said opposite ends and a nut on said bolt, said clamping members having apertures in opposite ends thereof, and said connecting link including cylindrical end portions movably seating in said apertures whereby said lever members may be moved longitudinally relative to said clamping members.
7. In a polish rod clamp, the combination of a pair of sub-assemblies each comprised of a pair of spaced apart clamping members fixedly connected by end plates, rod clamping semi-circular grooves extending transversely across said clamping members and said end plates, a pair of lever bars, one extending between each pair of clamping members, link means connecting one end of each pair of clamping members and means for adjustably connecting the ends of said lever members opposite said link to tilt the same and hence the other end of said clamping members to clamping position about said rod, said clamping members being substantially identical but having grooves of different diameters on the outer faces thereof whereby said members may be reversed relative to said lever bars, said clamping members having apertures in opposite ends thereof, and said connecting link including cylindrical end portions movably seating in said aper tures whereby said lever members may be moved longitudinally relative to said clamping members.
