Description
(No Model.)
'J. ENGLE, Jr.
I AWNING FOR HOP PIUKERS- N0 .276,791. v I Patented May 1,1883.
the following is a full, clear, and exact dement to said box, which, being connected to a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB ENGLE, JR, OF SHARON CENTRE, NEW YORK.
AWNING'FOR HOP-PICKERS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,791, dated May 1, 1883. Application filed January 24, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB ENGLE, Jr., of Sharon Centre, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Awningt'or Hop-Pickers, of which scription.
My invention consists of a folding and extensible sunshade of simple construction, and preferably of square form as to the cover, having a staff adapted to be fastened to the side of the hop-box, and being provided with a universaljoint above the part for attachthe box for a support, anti so -that it may be shifted from place to place on the box, affords a simple, efficient, and very comfortable protection for the pickers from the sun, that may be readily shifted around as the sun advances, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in
which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my im- I proved awning for hop-pickers applied to the 1 box in which the hops are deposited for a support, and Fig. 2 represents an elevation of part of the universal-joint device of the staff.
It represents the lower section of the staff, I which is preferably made square to be connected in part to the side of the hop-box b by a plate-staple, c, which, besides holding it thereto, will prevent it from turning. The said part a extends a short distance above the top of the box, and is connected thereto by a book, 0, and abinding-screw, f, to screw it firmly. At the top of this part a of the staE the lower end of the upper section, 9, of the staff is con nected by a universal-joint contrivance, consisting of the clamp devices h t on the said parts of the stafi", and the double clamp-disk devicej It, and clamp-screws Z, by which it will be seen the upper section of the staff may be shifted about to follow the sun. The upper section, 9, has the cloth cover m, with theusual extensible and folding frame of sunshades.
l propose to apply as many of the plate staples c to the box as may he required for enabling the shade to be shifted to the diiferent parts of the box as may be needed.
I do not limit myself to the particular form of universaljoint which I have herein represented, for a ball-and-socket joint and other equivalent contrivances may be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, wh atI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. An awning or sunshadelor hop-pickers,
having its staff made in twoparts, a, (1, connected together by a universaljoint, the lower section, a, being square to adapt it to enter staples on the side of a box, and provided with the book 0 and binding screw f at its upper end, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a box provided with a series-of staples, c, of the staff a q, connected together by the universaljoint h "ij is Z, and provided with the hookc and bindingscrewf, substantially as herein shown and described.
JACOB ENGLE, JR.
