Description
W. 0. CAMPBELL.
. WAGON JACK.
' No. 276,771. --Patented May 1,1883.
WITNESSES N PETERS, Phoio-Lilhcgmphnr. Washingian, o a
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. CAMPBELL, OF GOR-NING, NEW YORK.
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO,-276,771, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed March 10, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WM. 0. CAMPBEL a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Corning, in the county ofSteuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WagonJacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to an improvement in lifting-jacks, having for its object to enable the ready adjustment of the same to the axles of vehicles of different heights to permit the usual method of removing the wheels forgreasing or lubricating the axle; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved lifting-jack, and Fig. 2 represents details thereof.
To put into practice my invention I employ two uprights or standards, A A, arranged in the form of a tripod, being pivoted together at their upper ends, and provided with feet a a to prevent their sinking into the ground.
B is a slide with one end connected or pivoted to one upright or leg of the tripod, and the other end being provided with a slot, b, adapted to embrace and slide upon the other leg of the tripod, said latter leg having a rack, c, with which said slide engages.
O is the lifting-lever, connected to that leg of the tripod to-which the slide B is connected, preferably by the pivot of the latter, said lever being madepreferablyin the form shownthat is to say, straight a certain portion of its length, with that portion on one side of its straight part inclined and that on the other side of said straight part curved to properly hold or receive the axle, said curved part extending beyond one leg of the tripod.
D is a weighted lever pivoted to the slide B, and connected by links (Z to the liftinglever (l to facilitate the adjustment of the latter upon its rackas it is raised and lowered.
It will be noticed that with the curved end of the lever (I placed under a weight or an axle of a vehicle, and by spreading the legs of the tripod A farther apart, the effect of which will be to move the slide together with the lever C upward, the axle will be elevated and the wheel can be readily removed for greasing or lubricating the axle. By suitably moving the legs of the tripod toward or from each other the device can be adjusted to axles of vehicles of different heights.
1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In a lifting-jack, the combination, with the tripod, with the upper ends of its legs pivoted together and having a rack, of the pivoted slotted slide, the lifting-lever, and the weighted lever linked to the lifting-lever, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM G. CAMPBELL.
