SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,754, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed March 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it m my concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BASGH, of Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears forDeseamin g Cloth andIdo hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in shears for deseaming cloth, and for other purposes, such as cutting tin, wire, &c.; audit consists in the combination of a stationary blade, a pivoted blade, a connecting-rod, and an operating-shaft provided with a pendulum, whichis operated by the foot, and which serves to raise the blade after having been depressed, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a shearing-machine which is to be operated entirely by the foot of the operator, so as to leave the hands free to move the material that is to be operated upon.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective of my invention.
A represents the table, to one edge of which is secured the lower and stationary blade, B. Pivoted upon the edge of the table is a second jaw, G, which is provided with an adjustable blade, and which has the extension 1) formed upon its rear end.- Upon this rear end is formed a socket to receivethe ball formed on the upper end of the connecting-rod F, for the purpose of allowing the two parts free movement. J ournalcd in the legs or frame of the table is the partially-revolving shaft G, which has the arm H extending outward from it. In the outer end of this arm H is formed the cupshaped socket to receive the ball which is formed upon the lower end of the connectingrod. By forming a ball-and-socket joint both upon the outer end of the extension and the outer end of the arm, the rod freely adapts it- 7 self to the movement of both parts without causing any binding action. Secured to the shaft is a pendulum, I, which is to be operated by foot. This pendulum returns the shaft to position after it is released from the operators foot, and as the shaft-swings back it causes the pivoted blade to rise ready for another cut. Secured to the under side of the blades do not fit sufficiently close I loosen the screws which hold the blade to the arm and screw up on the set-screws. This springs the blades together and makes them work accurately at all times.
The lug J may either be formed of a. block of rubber or an iron socket in which a piece of rubber is placed; or, instead of the rubber, a spring of any suitable kind may be used, which spring will have a tendency to instantly return the treadle to position after striking against it.
Having thus described my inventiou,-"-I claim- 1. In a shearing-machine, the. combination of the table, to which the stationary blade is secured, with the pivoted blade having the adjustable cutter attached thereto by means of set-screws, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of the pivoted arm or jaw, the operating-shaft provided with an arm, and a connecting-rod, the pivoted jaw and the arm being provided with cup-shaped sockets to receive the balls on the ends of the connecting-rods, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the stationary jaw secured to the table, the pivoted jaw, the connecting-rod, the arm upon the shaft, and the pendulum for returning the pivoted jaw topositiou, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a shearing or deseaming machine,
the combination of the shaft, the trcadle, and an elasticlug or projection, which is secured to the under side of the table, substantially as set forth.
