UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
WILLIAM OOOHRANE, OF EAST WOODSTOOK, OONNEOTIGUT.
COVER-FSTENER FOR FRUIT-JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,670, dated May 1, 21883. Application filed March 10, 1883. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GooHRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Woodstock, in' the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fasteners for Fruit-J ars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth. ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and ligures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specitication.
My invention consists in a fastener for a fruit-jar cover, formed ofa coiled spring, heads respectively at the top and bottom of the coiled spring, and hooks or claws reaching down from thc upper head on opposite sides of the spring and adapted to catch under ears or a ilange on the neck of the jar, substantially as hereinafl er specified.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure l represents a side view of one of the spring-fasteners; Fig. 2, a top uview ofthe same; Fig. 3, a top view of a modified construction thereof; Fig. 3f, a side view of the same; Fig. 3b, another side view at right angles to the lirst side view thereof; Fig. 4, a side view of the fruitjar with one of the fasteners in position on its cover prior to compressing and securing the same; Fig. 5, a side view of thejar after the fastener has been compressed and secured in place.
Like letters designate corresponding parts in all ot' the figures.
The fastener A is formed as a coiled spring, substantially as shown in Fig. l. At the respective ends of the spring are heads u b. These heads may be sheetmetal plates or disks attached to the spring, as shown inFig. 2; or they may be portions of the saine wire which forms the spring, as shown in Figs. 3, 3e, and 3b, where the lower head is formed of the last or largest coil of the spring andthe upper head is in the form of a cross-bar made of .the upper part of the spring-wire. From the upper head or disk, a, of the fastener project i downward hooks or claws c c, respectively, on 5o opposite edges of the same. These hooks or claws are formed to take and hold under the ears or ange d d, usually formed on the neck of a fruit-jar, B. They may be attached in any suitable way to the head a, if the latter is formed of sheet metal, or as a disk of any material, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or, if the head is of wire, the hooks or claws may be continuations ot' the wire forming the said head, as shown in Figs. 3, 3a, and 31h, wherein the upper part of the spring is represented as rst extended outward, then downward, and then inward, as at a, then outward, upward, and inward, as at y, by the side of the part a', then outward to theopposite sideot'thespring, then downward, and then inward, as atz, where the wire terminates.
As seen in Fig. 4,when the fasteneris placed in position, with its lower head resting on the cover of the jar B, the hooks or claws o c do not reach donn to the neck of the jar, so that the spring A has to be compressed before the hooks or claws can hook under the ears or ange of the neck of the jar, as indicated in Fig. 5. The parts are to be so proportioned that the requisite compression of the spring on the jar-cover is produced when the hooks or claws are secured under the ears or flange of thejar-neck.
This fastener is very secure, thcbearing of the lower head thereof on tbejar-cover being broad and the pressure equal all around from the spring above; and the fastening can not get liose nor fail to hold the jar-cover at all times. lt is also lvery easily applied and taken oft'and readily adjusted to the right position. It is cheaply made, and is very durable, Ilot being liable to break, get out ot' order, or wear out.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastener for a fruit-jar cover formed of a coiled spring, A, heads a b, and hooks or claws c c, and adapted to be applied to a fruit-jar, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 0
WILLIAM COOHRANE.
