Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB A. PAINTER, OF ARTHUR, ILLINOIS.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,622, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed anuary 8, 1883. (No model.)
1' all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB A. PAINTER, a
resident of the town of Arthur, county of Moultrie, and State of Illinois, have-invented a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of my devices. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the vise-leg on dotted line as in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig. 2 on dotted line 3 Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged views of the punch. Fig. 6 is a face view of the dieblock. Fig. 7 is the punch-tool, and Fig. Sis
a section through center of the die-block.
A is the vise; B, the punch; O, the shears; I), the support that secures the vise to the bench, and. G is the die-block.
The punch in detail is as follows: d is a guide for the punch-tool b, secured to support I.) through slot 0' by bolt 0. e is a spring that acts as a support for the head of the punchtool, and when the punch has beenop'eratejd and the vise reopened carries said punch-tool to its original position. Punch tbol b, as shfbwu in Fig. 7, is provided with a small cipical projection, b, that fits in the mark of the center-punch, and secures a degree of accuracy which, from the location ofthe dieblock and punch-tool, would otherwise be hardly attainable.
Die-block G is secured to the vise-leg in an adjustable manner by set-screw 'i, and when, with the metal to be punched restingon'support D, the punch will not operate at the proper position vertically both die-block and punch may be adjusted to conform to the metal slot 0' in the punch-guide d, being specially so designed. As shown in Fig. 8, the die-block proper, g, is beveled to countersink in its frame, and by this construction a number of die-blocks having holes conforming to the dif-' t'erent-sized punches may be kept on hand and readily interchanged.
Shears O are attached one tothe crossbar and one to the vise-leg, and, as will be readily seen, may be made in a variety of forms and secured in a variety of positions. Both shears and punch are operated by the vise, but in such a manner as not to interfere with its ordinary use, and from their form and position they are'entirely out of the way, occupying a space that heretofore has not been utilized.
In operation, as the vise-leg, on being closed, nears a perpendicular position it comes in contact with the punch-tool, which it forces through the metal. As the vise is reopened spring 0 carries the punch-tool back to its first position. The action of the shears is effected in a similar manner, except that they are cperated both ways by the vise and have no independent motion of their own.
It represents a slot in the vise-leg, through which the punch-chips escape.
' The form and size of tool b may be variously changed, and clamp Gg modified toconform thereto.
1 claim 1. The combination, with vise A and support D, of guided, spring 0, and punch-tool b, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Slot 0 in guide 0?, in combination with bolt 0 and support D, as andfor the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with adjustable guide cl, spring 0, and support D, of clamp G, screw 1 and block g, as and for the purpose set forth.
