UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ITHUEL M. JOHNSON, OF GORNING, NEW YORK.
WAGON-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,594, dated May 1, 1883. Application filed March 13,1883. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ITHUEL M. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Corning, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Jacks, of
which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in combined lifting-jack and wrench; and it consists in the combination and construction of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lifting-jack. Fig. 2 is a perspective folded view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the same, asis also Fig. 4, embodying the wrench.
In carrying out my invention I employ two upright pieces, A, pivoted together by the pivot-bolt A at their upper ends, and adapted to be spread apart at their lower ends, it thus being caused 'to assume an A shape. The lower ends of these uprights are each provided with a pointed projection, a, and alateral projection, a, the former being adapted to penetrate the ground and prevent the slipping of thejack and the latter to prevent the sinking of the. standards thereinto, while, when the jack, is used indoors, cushions or disks a-, of rubber, are applied to said point-projections to prevent the warring of the floor.
B is the lifting bar or lever, pivoted between the upper ends of the uprights A A, and preferably by the same pivot-bolt used to connect the latter together. The forward slightly hooked end of the lever B, by the action of which the weight or the axle of the vehicle is lifted, is supplied with a rubber band or cushion, b, to avoid defacing nicely-painted axles. This lever and one of the uprights A-the front one-are provided with notches, as at c, with which is adapted to engage a bail, U,im' provised into a wrench, O. The bail O has at its upper end, on each side,a hook, 0 adapted to engage with the notches of the lever. I By exerting downward pressure upon the longer arm of the lever B and slipping the hook at the upper end of the bail into the desired notch of the lever and the lower end thereof into the required notch of the front bar, A, the lever, with its supported axle or weight, will wrench.
When the parts are folded, as shown in Fig 2, it will be noticed that the bail O is slipped upon and buttoned to one of the bars A by means of a button-shaped head, 6, on one end of the pivot-bolt A, it being adapted to permit the insertion of the bail between said head or button and the bar A, said button being adapted to be turned so as to secure the bail to the bar. The pin or projection d of the wrench or bail is inserted through the notch f in the edge of one of the bars A and enters a depression or indenture, g, in the other bar A, aiding the securing of the parts compactly together.
Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent-- 1. In a lifting-jack, the combination, with the pivoted-together bars, one being notched, of the notched lever, and the bail having a lateral hook at its upper or one end and on one or both sides, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a lifting-jack, the bars having their lower ends provided each with a pointed projection and a lateral projection, substantially" as and fort-he purpose set forth.
3. In a lifting-jack, the bars A, having their pivot-bolt provided with a buttonshaped head, 6, in combination with the bail 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a lifting-jack, the bars A, with their pivot-bolt provided witha button-shaped head, 6, one of said bars also having a notch,f, and
the other a recess, g, in combination with the bail 0, having the lateral pin or projection d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ITHUEL M. JOHNSON.
