HAIR CUTTING DEVICE Filed Dec. 30, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 JA M55 V Po TEN TE IN V EN TOR.
A TTOENE Y5 CUTTHWG DEVICE James V. Potente, North Bergen, N. J.
Application December 30, 1955, Serial No. 556,527
6 Claims. (Cl. 132-45) This invention relates to a hair cutting device which permits an inexperienced person to cut anothers hair.
At the present time, with the high cost of labor and the high cost of living, the periodic haircuts can cause a serious drain in the family budget. This is especially true where the family has a number of children. In such case the cost of haircuts can become a serious problem.
Prior to the date of the instant invention a number of hair cutting devices were made which attempted to permit an inexperienced person to cut the hair of another. The prior devices, while attempting to positively position the hair cutting means upon the head of the person whose hair was being cut (and in so doing used the correct principle) neglected to position the hair cutting device both horizontally and vertically.
As a result the prior devices, which were formerly placed upon the market, did not perform the job for which they were intended and have all been utter failures.
The instant invention, on the other hand, since it positively positions the hair cutting means both horizontally and vertically, performs its job in an excellent manner and permits even an inexperienced person to cut anothers hair.
The invention may be briefly described as comprising, in combination, an encircling member adapted to embrace the head and to be secured thereto. A horizontal arcuate guiding member is secured to the encircling member and is preferably spaced therefrom. A horizontally and pivotally movable first guided member runs upon the horizontal guiding member. The first guided member is in turn secured to a vertical guiding member (preferably flexible). A vertically movable second guided member runs upon the vertical guiding member and is adapted to be secured to hair cutting means.
In the preferred modification of this invention the encircling member is separable and bears complementary fastening means at the separable portions. A holding member is secured to the encircling member at substantially right angles thereto and is adapted to pass over the top of the head. The first guided members are provided in pairs and each member of the pair is secured to a vertical guiding member. The vertical guiding members run along opposite sides of a hair clipper and the vertically movable second guiding members are secured to opposite sides of the hair clipper.
The invention will be further described by reference to the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this specification.
Fig. l is a side view of the hair cutting device of this invention in o erative position about the head of the person whose hair is to be cut.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the hair cutting device of this invention also in operative position about the head of the person whose hair is to be cut.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hair cutting device of this invention in the position that it would assume operatively but with the head of the person whose hair is to be cut omitted for clarity of illustration.
2,765,797 Patented Oct. 9, 1956 Referring now to the specific embodiment of this invention as set forth in the accompanying drawings for a detailed description of the invention and the operation thereof the hair cutting device 11 is formed with an encircling member 12 which is adapted to embrace the head 13 of the person whose hair is to be cut.
Encircling member 12 is separable and bears buckle 14 at one of its separable portions while the other portion is provided with a series of holes (not shown) which permit encircling member 12 to be adjusted in size and secured to the head 13.
Holding member 17 is secured to encircling member 12 at 15 and 16 at substantially right angles thereto. Holding member 17 passes over head 13 and is preferably elastic and separable.
Holding member 17 bears buckle 18 at one of its separable portions while the other portion is provided with a series of holes 19.
Horizontal arcuate guiding member 20 is secured to encircling member 12 at 21 and 22. Member 20 is preferably made of a semi-rigid material such as styrene plastic. Member 20 is preferably spaced from encircling member 12 as shown.
First guided members 23 are horizontally and pivotally movable and run along member 20. Members 23 are in turn secured to vertical guiding members 24, which are preferably flexible. Second guided members 25 run along guiding members 24 and are in turn adapted to be secured to opposite sides of a hair clipper 26. A stop member 27 is also provided spanning the space between guiding members 24 at the top thereof to prevent clipper 26 from moving too far upwardly. A similar stop 28 may also be provided at the bottom thereof to prevent clipper 26 from being accidentally removed from guiding members 24.
Guiding members 24 are made flexible for proper operation of the device. Guiding members 24 bear a widened portion 29 at the top thereof which is provided with a hole therein (not shown). First guided members 23 are formed with a downward projection 30 which is secured within the hole within the widened top portion of guiding members 24.
The operation of this device will now be explained by reference to the specific form thereof as shown in the drawings.
Encircling member 12 is separated, adjusted in size to fit the head of the person whose hair is to be cut, and buckle 14 tightened. Holding member 17 is likewise adjusted and buckle 18 tightened. Stop 27 is slid along guiding members 24 until it is stopped by widened portion 29. Hair clipper 26 (to which second guided members 25 have been previously secured) is then slid along guiding members 24 so that guided members 25 run along guiding members 24. Stop 28 is then slid into place below clipper 26 to prevent the clipper from being inadvertently removed from its position.
The device may now be used to cut the hair of the person to whose head it is secured. The operator operates the clipper and moves it about the head either vertically or horizontally to remove the unwanted hair. The device is positive in action since it is always properly positioned and a straight line of cut is always produced.
The foregoing specific embodiment of this invention as set forth in the specification and drawings herein are for illustrative purposes and for purposes of example only.
Various changes and modifications may obviously be made within the spirit and scope thereof without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
