SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,529, dated April 24, 1853.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT It. ELLIOTT, of Boston, in the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Carriage- Ways, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that class ot' devices for transporting and carrying articles from one point to another, and means for checking or stopping the carrier as it reaches its destination with as little shock or noise as possible; and it consists of a suspended car or carrier supported by grooved wheels suspended on an elevated cable-wire or Wire rope, covered or not, and said carrier being formed in two parts, the lowersuspended by toggle-link and springs from the upper.
The objects of my improvements are to construct a car or carrier having an upper platform or covering and a bottom tray, which are adapted to be brought in contact with each4 other automatically, and thus prevent any article therein contained from falling out; to provide a-u adjustable stop or check block having an inclined plane and hollow rest for the wheels of the carrier, and a head or buffer to prevent shock. I attain these objects by the =mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a horizontal side view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical front view of the car or carrier. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tray; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the toggle-lilik; Fig. 5, a. side view ot the stop or check block and rest; Fig. 6, a vertical face view of the same, and Fig. 7 a view showing alongitudinal section of the protected or covered cable or wire.

The horizontal suspended wire cable A,which is secured to suitable supports, (not shown in the drawings,) is covered by vulcanized rubber or any suitable material, for the purpose of preventing or deadening the noise of the passing carrier. This cable A is adapted to support a carrier, C, which is constructed as follows: Said carrier is suspended by means of grooved pulleys D D, connected to the upper platform or covering, E, by hangers Dl D. | two on each side ot' the carrier, (Ido not, however, limit myself to that number, as more or less may be used when found advantageous,) theotherends ofthe toggle-links beingattached very light and of sheet metal. They can also be constructed ot' different thicknesses, as the case may require. This tray or box is protected when closed (being its normal position) by the covering-lid E, which is made slightly longer and wider than the tray, so as to extend over the rim or border B. Each pair of the pivoted toggle-links G are connected by means of a'rod, J, around which is a spiral spring suitably connected and secured on one side to the upper toggle-links and on the other to the lower toggle-links. To the under part ot' the tray is secured a ring or handle, I, the purpose of which will more fully be described hereinafter. i
On the cable A is secured an adjustable stop or check block, M, composed of two depending arms, R, which are adapted to tit over the cable iA, and under which they are united bymeans of screws or bolts S. The forward part of the stop or check block M forms an inclined plane,N, then by curving downward, as shown at O, forms a seat, O', for the reception of the grooved wheel, and then by curving upward forms a buffer, Q, to which is attached a suitable elastic material, I), the purpose ot which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The operation is as follows: The adjustable stop or check block having been suitably secured in its position on the cable,-and the carrier also suspended from the same, the operator pushes the carrier over the cable, its velocity carrying it up the inclined plane N until one of wheels D falls into the seat O, being there arrested from further movement by the curvature ofthe seat.` Now, supposing the tray or E, as shown by dotted lines--the operator wishing to load simply takes hold of the ring Iand lowers the tray to any desired level, the spring on the toggle-link G allowing ot' this movement. To shut the tray all that is necessary is to let go the ring I, when by the tension ot' the springs it will return in place. Other means of carrying the tray to the cover may be employed which would be within` the range ot' my invention.
