Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. EOGLES, OF ST. LOUIS,-MI SSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ISAAC N. BYRNS, OF SAME PLACE.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,527, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed August 11, 1982.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. EocLEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nut-Locks for Fish-Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and accurate description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and ,letters marked thereon, which make a part of this specification.
My invention relates to nutlocks; and it consists of parts and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter be described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l repre sents a perspective view of a rail having my improved device attached thereto; Fig. 2, a transverse section on line or as, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of the lower plate Fig. 4, a plan view of the upper plate.
Arepresents the rails, provided with beltholes and bolts to a; B, a fish-plate, provided with bolt-ho1es b b for bolts a; O, the lower locking-plate, havinglongitudinal openings 0, which embrace nuts 0. a on bolts a a; E, the upper looking or washer plate, having oval openings 6 e for bolts a to pass through, and D a pin which passes down between the upper and lower plates, and serves to lock the parts together. Both plates may be struck from one piece of metal, the surplus from the interior of the lower plate serving for the upper plate. The lower plate is provided with ele vations c c, the convex faces of which rest upon and elevate the ends above the fish-plate, so that when the former is placed in position the ends will be above the lower ends of the (No model.)
nuts. The object of this is to prevent the locking-plate working below the nuts, and also to hold the plate in such a manner that the walls of the slot will bear or impinge near the center of the square portions of the nuts. The upper plate, (3, serves as a loop or staple, and is provided with a depression, 6, the concave surface of which faces the fish-plate, and the body projects outwardly between elevations c c. The ends 0 are beneath nuts a at, and are provided with oval openings 0 0, through which bolts a a pass, and permit of a longitudinal motion of the plate when the pin D is inserted between elevations c a and depression a.
I am aware that locking-plates have been held in place by means of staples and pins; that said plates have been provided with elevations which support them above the fishplate, and that washer-plates have been projected from the fish-plate, and provided with pins which lockthe parts together, and these I do not claim; but
What I do claim is- The combination, substantially as described, of rails, a fish-plate attached to the rails by bolts and nuts, a locking-plate having elevations at or near its vertical median line, and a longitudinal slot, a washer-plate having a depression which projects between said elevations, and oval slots for the bolts, and a pin inserted between the locking and washerplates, for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM M. EUOLES.
