Description

(NB Model.) J.. S. CLARKE.
` FEED WATER REGULATOR. No. 276,355. Patented Apr-.24,1883.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
f UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. CLARKE, OF EAST CHINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH FRANK DUNNEBACK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FEED-WATER REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,355, dated April 24, 1883.
` Application inea August 24, 1882. (No model.)
1' o all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. CLARKE, of East China, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, havel invented a new and Improved Feed-Water Regulator and Alarm for Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a waste-pipe connected with the feed-water pipe from the pump to the boiler, together with a valve to open said pipe and allow the water from the pump to escape when the boiler is full, and to close it and cause the water to enter the boiler when required, the said valve being controlled by a lloat in the boiler, which ioat is also made to cause a whistle to sound an alarm in case the pump, injector, or inspirator fails to act and the water falls too low in the boiler, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing is shown a sectional elevation of my improved feed-water regulator and alarm apparatus.
The feed-water pipe a, leading from the pump (not shown) to the boiler b,to which it is to be connected in any approved manner, has a branch, o, connected to it between the pump and the boiler, with a double valve, d e, init, to the part e of which steam is to be admitted from the boiler through pipe fby afloat, g, and valve h. When the water in the boiler allows the neat to fall, the steam, pressing on part e, which is larger than part cl, which controls the waste-passage, will close the wastepipe by the greater pressure on said part e, causing the water to be forced into the boiler by the pump. When the` water rises in the boiler so that loat g will close valve h and shut the steam oft from valve o, the water from the pump will escape through the waste-pipe o. A check-valve, properly located in pipe a, between the waste-pipe connection and the boiler, will prevent the escape of water from the boiler through the Waste-pipe.
The' float g is made hollow for buoyancy,
and itis provided with a tubular rod, c', which opens to the atmosphere outside of the boiler for the escape of any vapor that may be caused in the ioat from water entering Ait through the pores of the metal, which would ultimately ll it and render it useless.
The valve h is balanced to make it open readily, and care is to be taken to so construct it that it will not stick fast in any case; but for greater safety the rodi of the oat is titted through the arm j of the valve-rod of an alarm- Whistle, so that in case the pump, injector, or inspirator fails for any cause and the water fallstoo low the collar l on the rod fi will open the valve m of the whistle 7c and soundthe alarm.
a represents a tubular guard, extending down within the boiler to support the float-rod against lateral thrusts of the iloat by the waves or currents of water set in action by the heat.
The valve h is arranged in a casting, o, which is attached to the domcp of the boiler by any suitable connecting-nipple,v q, into the lower end of which the guard n is screwed, the nipple having a reducer, s, in the-lower end, which may have perforations t for the passage of the' steam, the guard n being closed at the lower end for a support to the rod Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the float g balanced valve h, double valve d e, steam-pipe f, feedwater pipe a, and the wastepipe c, substantially as described. t
2. The combination, with the feed-water pipe a, boiler-steam pipe f, and waste-pipe c,
of' the connected relief-valves d e, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the boiler-dome p, of the nipple q, having guard a, reducer s, and perforations t, as shown and described.
JOHN S. CLARKE.
