Huckabee, Shreveport, La.- Appitcaeaansvemberfs, 1953;.s`erfai-Nassn9mf stolaimstcoreani) ,I This' invention relatesto a novel' a'n'dv improvedt device for sealing the' barrels, ofV rifles, Shotguns and revolvc'rs' and for4 cleaning such barrels, th'e primary object' of the invention being to provide a morepractical",eifieiet and reliable device of this' kindi which' is of simpler rid-more 'rugged construction.
Another important object of the` invention isT tti-provide a= gun barre-l sealing device which cannot Se retrieved with ordinary pliers, wrenches, or screwdivs, sothat the device more securely and safely protects a gun barrel from beiii'gfl'e'iaded by i'iatliorizedpes'o''s; such as children, and fromt the' entrancef therein.- of: foreign matter. A further important object of the invention isA to provide device; ofthe character indicated abov''which is readily convertible for cleaning gun* barrels, and which is; readily convertible' to' fit barrels of different"Vv gauges,
other' important objects' and advantageous feaniresrof the intendete. win be apparent fr um ynre renewing qescriptiun and' the accompanying' drawings, wherein; for purposes of. illustration rather than limitation; sv'pe'eiiic catchments er the invention are ser forth in dersie In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation of a single barrel shotgun, with the barrel in longitudinal cross section and containing a device in accordance with the present invention in sealing relation thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure l, showing the barrel broken and the said device partly in section;
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of said device alone with portions thereof in longitudinal section;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the cap;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the special Wrench for the cap;
Figure 6 is an enlarged, contracted longitudinal section taken through a gun barrel and through parts of another embodiment of the present invention in sealing relation to the gun barrel;
Figure 7 is a contracted view similar to Figure 3, the plug of the device being replaced by a cleaning brush;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary longitudinal section showing said brush in use;
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 7 showing the brush replaced by a swab holder and swab; and
Figure l0 is a transverse section taken on the line 10-10 of Figure 9.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, and first to Figures l to 5 thereof, the numeral 11 generally designates a shotgun having a barrel 12 having a forward end 13 and a rearward breech or chamber end 14.
A device in accordance with the present invention and generally designated 15 comprises a plug 16 for engagement in the chamber end 14 of the barrel 12, and a rod 17, and a cap 18. The plug 16 is a cylindrical body which has a close lit in the barrel 12 and has on its rearward end a lateral 'ange 19 which seats in the groove 20 of the chamber end 14 of the barrel 12, wherebyvforward' movement' of the plug I6 in the barrel V12 is` p recl'tftdedl The plugV 16 has a threaded axial socket 21 opening Vthrough its forward end 22.
The rod 1'7' is' of rela-tively small diameter and has a threaded rearward end portion 23 arranged to thread into the plug. socket 21'.
Non-rotatably xecl upon the forward end portion of the'rod' 17 is: the cap 18 which comprises a cylindrical bod`y 2'4. fitting thej forward end 13 of the barrel 1'2 and a lateral flange 25 onthe forward end ofthe body 2`4. The Harige sofQs'ubstantially the s'ame outside diameter as tlie barrel 12 and. is bevelled, as indicated at 26, so" asL to fair into the barrel end 13', and so as to. leave insulcie'nt' surface to give' purchase t'o wrench or pliers used in unauthorized attemptito rotate the cap` 1'8',
The forward ned 27" of the cap 18' is provided witha pair of relatively greatly` diametrically spaced holes 28, 28 for reception of pins' 29, 29 on aY speci-a1v Spanner wrench 30 which has a handleY portion 3-1 provided witha hole Szfr eng ing the wrench 30 on a key-ringer the like.V
i e delscribe'dk device is installed.` inY sealingl rela- 1 Barret 12 by insertiugtiie p1ug 16 forwardly in the chamber end I4 of the, barrel'l 1`2`,` in,- Y rodj1`7 rearwardly into the forward" end 13 o fth b^- rel I2' accompanied by the cap 1.8 in such a Wayv as" te engage the threaded'. rearward end portion z3 of the d 17 into the' threaded' socket' 2f of the plug 1:6'. 'lflrreupon the' special wrench isir employed to rotate ythe cap'f 1' and: therod 17 until the plug'16` and the capri? li'veftiieir iia'nges 19 and Z5@ respectively, tightly engaged' vv'ith"` ther rearward andz forward ends, respectively, ofthe barrel' 12. The barrel' I2 cannot the'rl be loaded andi ifs inferior is' sealedl against the entrance' of any fore'rg'ir matter'. Because or" the' special arrangement f the forward end 27 of the cap 18 and its bevelled ange 25, the cap cannot be effectively loosened by the use of any usually available tools, but the special wrench 30 is required to be used.
Referring now to Figure 6 of the drawings, there is therein shown another embodiment of the invention, which is generally designated 15a. In this embodiment the plug 16a has telescoped thereon one or more shim sleeves 33, 34 having forward end walls 35, 36 provided with central holes 37, 38 freely passing the threaded portion 23 of the rod 17u into the plug socket 21a. The plug 16a has on its rear end a ange 19a which engages a ilange 39 on the rear end of the inner sleeve 33, and the flange 39 of the inner sleeve 33 engages a ange 40 on the rear end of the outer sleeve 34, with the flange 40 engaging the barrel chamber groove 20. Through the provision and described arrangement of the shim sleeves 33 and 34 the device 15a can be adapted to barrels of three different gauges.
The cap 18a of the device 15a has telescoped thereon inner and outer shim sleeves 41 and 42, respectively, which have lateral anges 43 and 44, respectively, on their forward ends. The cap ange 25a engages the inner sleeve iange 43, and the inner sleeve flange 43 engages the outer sleeve flange 44, whereby the cap 18a is adaptable to barrels of three diiferent gauges.
Referring now to Figures 7 and 8 of the drawings, a brush head 45 is shown which can be substituted for the plugs 16 and 16a on the threaded rod end portions 23 or 23a of the above described embodiments, so that the devices can be used for brush cleaning the bore of the barrel 12.
Figures 9 and 10 show a swab head 46 which can replace the plugs 16 or 16a on the rod ends 23 or 23a of the above described embodiments. The swab head 46 has therein a longitudinal transverse slot 47 through v lbores 49. andSO, reisp'ecitiveiy,r whichl receive which a swab 48 can be engaged the bore ofthe barrel y12. f
for rswab cleaning ofA The brush head 4s andthe swabnead 46 have threaded f f the .threaded rod .end portions 23 and 23a. i What is claimed is:l f
