UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TRABUE, OF LQUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
LOADING-GATE FOR MAGAZINE-GUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,308, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed December 26, 1882. (N 0 model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM TRABUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, Jefferson county, Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire- Arms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful im provements in fire-arms, and particularly to that class known as magazine-guns, which are adapted .to be used as breech-loaders.
My invention hasfor its object to provide in thefside plate a gate or door through which cartridges may be introduced into the breech. Prior to my invention various devices have been devised, in allof which (except in a ponding applicationfor Letters Patent by me filed some time in December, 1882) the plate is provided with a permanent opening which is closed by an autoniatically-closing gate or door arranged underneath the plate. My present invention, like that described in my pending application, involves the general idea of so arranging the gate or door within the opening in the. side ofthe plate that when the door is closed the plate has the appearance of being smooth and continuous; and the special feature of my present invention is the particular feature of construction and arrangement, hereinafter described, for accomplishing this result.
To enable those skilled to fully understand my invention, Iwill proceed to describe the same, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which at the proper locality is cutaway sufficientl y to permit the ready introduction of a shell. The vertical edges of this opening are provided with a dovetail groove to receive and hold the edges of the gate or door B, as clearly shown at Fig. 4, and the exterior surfaces of the door 13 and plate A at their meeting edges are beveled orcapped, as seen at (J, to facilitate the opening of the door by pressure of the bullet end of the cartridge in an obvious manner. The lower edge of the door B is provided with an inwardly-projecting arm or foot,D,"at right angles to its line of movement, adapted to rest upon a spiral or other spring, E, which opcrates to force the gate or door toa closed position.
It will be observed that the gate B becomes a part of the plate, and exactly fills and closes .the opening made in said plate for its reception, and that when closed the plate has no unsightly and awkward depressions to catch dirt, &c.
I do not of course wish to lay any broad claim to this idea in this case, as that forms the subject of another pending case before reierred to; but
What I do claim as now, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The side plate, A, provided with an opening for the reception of shells, fitted and closed by a vertically-reelprocating door or gate, B, arraiiged in dovetail grooves, and provided with an inwardly-projecting foot, D, in combination with an actuating-spring, E, substantially as shown and described.
' In testimony whereofl have hereunto set my handin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM TRABUE.
Witnesses F. L. BROWNE, N. U. LAMMOND.
