Description

(ModeL) I. N. PEIROB. SPRING FASTENER FOR J AR COVERS.
Patented Apr. 24,1883;
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
I; NEWTON PEIRGE, on PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPRlNG-FAST ENER FOR JAR-COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,276, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed September 13, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I. NEWTON PEIRGE, of
the city of Philadelphia, and a citizen of the United States, and a native of the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Fastener for the (lovers of Milk-Jars and Fruit and. Preserving Jars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of fastenings for fruit-jars which are formed of wire and act to securely hold the cover to the jar; and my invention consists in certain features hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a jar provided with my improved fastening. Fig. 2is an enlarged view of a portion of said fastening, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same detached from the jar.
Like letters refer to like parts in all the figures. i
A represents an ordinary fruit-jar, provided with lugs A, (one of which only isshown,) formed on the body portion, and with a cover having a depressed central upper surface.
Heretofore a wire has been bent to form two oppositely-disposed spring-arms merged in a central bearing, adapted to fit either of two seats arranged at right angles to each other in the upper surface of the cover, and to form angular extensions provided with hooks adapted to take under the lugs on the body of the jar, and when so constructed and applied to a jar the arms of the fastener lie substantially horizontal and upon the jar-cover, and paral= lel with the bearing portion.
at right anglesto form the portions h i and i k, and gj andj m. When detached, the arms 6 h andj'g are slightly elevated, and the pertions d e and c f cross each other, and the bail portions ht and gj are inclined or slanted ontwardly; but when applied to a jar and cover, the arms are sprung down at their outer ends, and thebail portions are swung inward and thehooks inserted under the lugs, when, as shown in Fig. 1, there is a space provided under the arms, which adapts them to be used as a handle; and, further, the bearing portion being disposed at a right angle to the arms, all liability of the fastening to turn on its hooks as pivots is overcome; and, further, the crossed portions sustain each hook and the whole device against the strain caused by its hooked position or by lifting the jar by graspin g the clamp.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The wire spring having the base 0 d, the crossed uprights d e and of, the arms a h and fg, and clasping ends i k andj m, as and for the purpose set forth.
I. NEWTON PEIROE.
