MAP AND CHART CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,267, dated April 24, 1883.

Application filed December 22, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM E. MOON, a citizen of the United States,residing atRichmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Map and Chart Case, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide cheap and convenient means of preserving I maps, charts, and other printed matter, to facilitate their use in schools, colleges, and libraries, and to economize spaceby putting what is wanted where it is wanted. It is especially adapted to the display of maps, charts, and alphabetical sheets for primary schools. It is also well adapted to high schools and colleges, and for graded schools it has the further advantage of accommodating all grades by containing matter adapted to each grade, which can be readily removed and as readily replaced in the case when not in use. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in. which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case closed as it hangs against the wall of the schoolroom or library. Fig. 2 is a detailed View, in perspective, of the case open, showing a swinging leaf or bracket turning on a simple hinge, having display-sheets suspended from its upper edge, as well as having maps or charts pasted on one or both sides of the leaf itself. Fig. 3 represents the swinging leaf turned back, showing the other side of the swinging leaf, and also of the display-shcets.

The front recessed frame, B, and the rear recessed frame, L, with panels A and E, may be made any desired size or pattern, the hangers 0 O, the swinging leaf or bracketG, hinged to the front or rear frame, may be made detachable, if desired. The display sheets or maps H are attached to the upper edge of the leaf by means of a strip or roller, I, pivoted orotherwise. The hangers O G are fastened to the back frame, L, for the purpose of support when the case is in position. The front and rear frames may both swing on brackets attached to the wall, so the whole case'may be turned from one side tothe other, or may be opened. like a book on the hinge line J J. The wire.

To givea better understanding of my invention, I will describe the method of operating it. The maps, charts, or other matter to be studied or displayed may be attached by their upper edges to the strip or roller I, which is attached in any desired way to the upper edge of the swinging leaf G, or may be pasted on the sides of the leaf. When display-sheets are attached to top of swinging leaf G by the strip I the case is opened and the leaf G is turned port. The display-sheets can be thrown to the right or left side of the swinging leaf until the can be turned to left or right to accommodate the school or class, or the swinging leaf G may be lifted off its hinges K K 'and taken to another room or place andhung up by the same hinges, and the display-sheets and the sheets pasted upon its surface can be exhibited in the same way as if hung in the case. In this way any number of leaves G may be added to the case, oneor more of them having display-sheets H mounted upon their upper edge and maps and charts pasted upon their surfaces. In this way it will be seen that one subject-say physiological charts-may be pasted upon the leafsurfaces. A reading chart may be mounted upon top of one leaf G, charts of penmanship, arithmetic, civil government, drawing, 850. Another set, consisting of a series of charts, may be mounted upon another leaf until a complete outfit can be neatly and permanently mounted in one case, giving the teacher all the .facilities necessary to the best possible teaching. When not in use, all the contentsof this case can belocked up and kept secure against dust, light, or intruders.

What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a map and chart case, leaves or brackets Gr, having the roller or strip I thereon for holding maps or charts H, the leaves being adapted to swing on hinges and fold into the out at or near a right angle to the wall or sup-- desired map or chart is reached.
