Description

Sept- 1 1956 Y. H. KURKJIAN VENT CONTROLLING NURSING UNIT Filed Oct. 17, 1955 INVENTOR YER VAN? ffuRKu/A N fl/SATTORNEY United States Patent VENT CONTROLLING NURSING UNIT Yervant H. Kurkjian, Clifton, N. J. Application October 17, 1955, Serial No. 540,863 1 Claim. (Cl. 215-11) This invention relates to a nursing unit, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and efiicient controlling means for a flexible vented flange nipple, in the nature of a channel formed in the nipple flange and communicating with a venting means in the flange, the flange directly contacting the cap to automatically seal the venting means when nursing is discontinued.
A further object of this invention is the production of a simple and eflicient vented flange nipple in combination with a cap, the flange of the nipple having a channel communicating with a vent, and the cap engaging the flange inwardly of the channel and close to the neck of the nipple to automatically seal the venting means when nursing is discontinued.
The present invention is a modification of the structure shown in my application relating to a Nipple Carrying Vent Controlling Ring, filed February 24, 1953, Serial Number 338,545.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevational view of the nursing unit, certain parts being shown in section; and
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the nipple forming part of the nursing unit.
By referring to the drawing by numerals, it will be seen that designates a container having a large open end upon which a cap 11 is removably and adjustably secured or threaded. The cap 11 is provided with an inturned integral sealing flange 12 having a circumferential flat sealing face 13, constituting a nipple flange engaging means.
A flexible or rubber nipple 14 having a flexible annular and lateral nipple flange 15 is carried by the container 10. The flange 15 is provided with a circumferential venting channel or recess 16 upon its outer or upper face, which is located directly under the under or inner face 13 of the flange 12, adjacent and not far from the body of the nipple 14, as is shown in Figure 1. This channel or recess 16 is inset from the outer face of the flange 15, and a vent 17 extends through the flange 15 and communicates with the channel or recess 16. The vent has an open end inset within the channel or recess 16,
2,762,520 Patented Sept. 11, 1956 so that the open end of the vent is at all times out of contact with the nipple flange engaging means or flange 12. It should be understood that the venting means may include one or more aperture vents within the scope of the invention, and that the recess 16 may be of a suitable type to accomplish the purpose of the invention.
It is important to note that the venting channel 16 is formed adjacent the neck of the nipple 14, and that the channel 16 communicates with vent 17. The channel 16 is inset from the outer edge of the flange 15, and the flange 15 is provided with a circumferential flat upper sealing face in close proximity to said neck of the nipple for releasably abutting in flat contact or engagement with the flat inner face 13 of the cap flange 12. It should be further noted that the nipple flange engaging face 13 of the cap flange 12, overlies the channel 16 and contacts the outer or upper face of the nipple flange 15 interme diate the channel 16 and the neck of the nipple 14 to normally close or seal the channel 16. Since the vent is inset in the channel 16, the open end of the vent 17 will be at all times out of contact with the flange 12, thereby preventing clogging of the vent.
The channel 16 defines an air passageway communicating with and overlying said vent aperture 17 to convey air throughout the length of said passageway to the vent aperture 17 when the sealing face of the flexible flange intermediate the channel 16 and the neck of the nipple 14 flexes away from the sealing face 13 of the cap flange 12 at any point within the length of said sealing faces adjacent said passageway during the process of nursing. Having described the invention, what is claimed as new 1s:
In combination with a container, a cap adjustably secured to said container and including an integral sealing flange having a circumferential flat sealing face, a nipple having a neck and flexible nipple flange, said flexible nipple flange having a circumferential flat sealing face in close proximity to said neck of said nipple and releasably abutting said flat sealing face of said cap flange, said nipple flange having a vent aperture therein adjacent said seal ing face of said nipple flange, one end of said aperture being inset relative to said cap flange, said nipple flange having a circumferential channel in the upper face thereof outwardly of said nipple flange sealing face and providing an air passageway between said cap flange and nipple flange, said air passageway communicating with and overlying said vent aperture to convey air throughout the length of said passageway to said vent aperture when the sealing face of said flexible nipple flange flexes away from said sealing face of said cap flange at any point within the length of said sealing faces adjacent said passageway during the process of nursing.
