THICKNESS PLANEB SHAVING CONTROLLER AND COLLECTOR Filed Dec. l0, 1954 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 vaizsedrzdeiuarz INVENTOR 1 l l BY v ATTORNEYS United States Patent THICKNESS PLANER SHAVING CGNTROLLER AND COLLECTOR This invention relates to a shaving controller for a conventional type of planer machine.
It is an object of this invention to provide a shaving collecting or controlling device of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter to collect or control the chips and shavings of a planer machine and keep such shavings from being loosely moved by the carpenter.
It is another object of this invention to provide a shaving controller of this kind to maintain the working space for the machine and carpenter in a neat and clean condition.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a shaving controller of this kind which is relatively light in weight and relatively compact in size for connection to a planer machine of a work table by a carpenter or the like using a wood planer.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
ln the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view, partly broken away, of a shaving controller device constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the device taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
A shaving device in a work shop having a rotatable planer therein results in many chips and shavings falling onto the lloor or other place where the carpenter is adapted to move about. In order to maintain this space in a clean and neat condition I have provided the collector and controller constructed according to an embodiment of my invention. This shaving collecting and controller device for attachment to a planer machine is more particularly described hereinafter.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral designates generally a shaving collector and controller constructed according to an embodiment of my invention. The shaving collector and controller device 10 is adapted to be connected adjacent to a planer machine on a supporting table 12, which table has a table top 14 with downwardly extending legs 15 on or adjacent to the corners thereof in much the same manner as a conventional work table for a carpenter. The legs 15 are connected together and supported by the cross braces 16 engaging each of the legs 15 and adjacent ones so that the legs 15 are braced one against the other for the use of the planer 11 on the table 12.
The table top 14 is particularly adapted for vertical adjustment on the legs by a screw 17 which is engaged with the legs 15 and the table top 12, there being a gear 18 `on the screw 17 so that the screw 17 may be vertically adjusted together with the table 12 at the convenience or selection of the carpenter or other person using this planer and shaving collector or controller. In order that the screws 17 on the various legs 15 may be operated together there is a gear 18 on the shaft 19 which ex- ICC tends transversely `of the table l12y between the legs 155 and downwardly from the table top 14. The gear 20 on the shaft 19 will assure theunitary movement of the screws 17 engageable with the table top 14 when the shaft 19 is rotated by the crank 21 on one end thereof remote from the gears and outwardly from the legs of the table.
The planer 11 is cylindrical in shape having a cylindrical planer body 22 with outwardly'extending radially protruding knife blades 24 about the periphery thereof and extending substantially along the length of the planer. The structure of the planer is conventional in contiguration and is the same as a planer ordinarily and regularly used by carpenters when a work piece is to be planed or shaved to a given height.
The planer 11 is provided with a longitudinally extending shaft 25 therein having a pulley 27 on one end thereof to be engaged by a belt 28 which may be driven by any suitable source of power, not shown in lthe drawings.
Presser rollers 26 are disposed on the opposite sides of the planer 11 for holding the work to be planed in a given plane relation to the planer being used by the carpenter.
The hood 29 is carried by the table 12 over the planer 11 and over the work piece being shaved thereby. The hood 29 has an inclined top wall 30 engageable over both the planer 11, presser rollers 26 and all of the required elements of the planer 11 for collecting and limiting the free movement of the shavings resulting from the engagement of the planer with the work being shaved.
The hood 29 with the downwardly and laterally in` clined top wall 30 has a depending outer wall or end wall 31 on one end thereof depending from the top wall downwardly about the sides of the table 12. The depending outer side or end walls 31 constitute a skirt for holding the shavings of the planer from being loosely distributed about the oor or other surface where the planer 11 is being used.
There is provided a depending inner wall 32 spaced laterally from the outer wall 31 with the upper end of the inner wall 32 engaging with and extending downwardly from the outer edges of an inner top wall 34.
The inner top wall 34 is formed of a pair of end` engaging sheets secured together at one end thereof to.-y form a crest 35 with each of the inner top wall segments; 34 inclined downwardly and 4outwardly of the shaving,-
collector and controller 10 as clearly noted in Fig. 3. of the drawings.
The depending inner wall 32 and depending outer' wall 31 constitute therebetween a chute 36 for leading' the shavings from the planer downwardly from the top of the table 12 to a receptacle, not shown in the drawings, where the shavings may be collected and from there otherwise disposed of.
A deflector 37 is engaged between one end of the top wall 30 and inner top wall 34 as clearly noted in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the deflector being arcuate in configuration and extending downwardly on one side of the planer 11 so that the shavings will be directed in one direction from the planer between the inner and outerv4 top walls to the chute 36.
and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim. I claim:
In a wood planer having a rotatable cutter and pressure rolls on opposite sides of said cutter, a shaving collector comprising la substantially inverted U-shaped hollow member, the opposite legs of said member being-V;
a lower wall of substantially inverted V-shape with said lower wall projecting forwardly to a point closely adjacent the rear Ofsaidrcuttei: and in substantially the horizontal4 plane of `thevaxis ofsaid cutter, said bight having a downwardly and forwardly inclinedi top wall, a vertical wall depending. from the, forward portion of said top wall, anda transversely. arcuate front wall extendingV downwardly from saidl vertical wall. to a point substantially in the plane of the bottom of said cutter, said frontwall projecting downwardly between said cutter and the` front one 1of, said rolls.
