Description
Sept. 11, 1956 w. K. DOW 2,762,174
PORTABLE HONING DEVICE Filed April 20, 1954 INVENTOR. WALTER K. DOW
PORTABLE HONIN G DEVICE Walter K. Dow, Thompsonville, Conn. Application April'20, 1954, Serial No. 424,388 -Claims. (Cl. 51-1843) This invention relates to portable honing devices and has particular reference to a new and improved portable honingdevice which is relatively simple, compact and economical in construction, yet efiicient in operation.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, cornpact and economical yet efficient portable honing device with which it is possible to convert almost any lathe, drill press, millingmachine, screw machine or other machine or device having a revolving spindle into a honing machine.
Another object is to provide a device of the type set forth which will eliminate the necessity for expensive single purpose honing machines as now usually required.
Another object is to provide a honing device which is simple enough in operation that it can be utilized by the most inexperienced operator to hone precise and accurate holes and wherein the pressure on the stone may be advanced without stopping the machine.
Another object is to provide a device of the type set forth which is so simple and low cost and which utilizes conventional mandrels, stones and adapters.
A further object is to provide a honing device wherein the advancing pressure of the honing stone or rate of honing pressure is determined by the operator by a sense of feel and which can be used for honing holes that must be honed in either a vertical or a horizontal position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. It will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the accompanying claims, as the preferred form has been given by way of illustration only.
Referring to the drawing, wherein there is shown a side view partially in section of the honing device embodying the invention.
In the drawing, the device shown comprises the housing having the hollow portion 11 for receiving the mandrel adapter 12 which is locked in place by the set screw 13.
The body portion 10 has the drive shaft 14 which may be formed integral therewith or separately and rigidly attached thereto and which is adapted to be operatively connected to a lathe, drill press, milling machine, screw machine or other device having a rotary spindle.
Between body 10 and shaft 14 is the portion 15 having the threaded exterior portion 16 which is in threaded engagement with the threaded portion 17 on adjusting sleeve 18 and within portion 15 is the chamber 19 in which is positioned the coil spring 20 having its end 21 connected to pin 22 and its opposite end 23 connected to pin 24 which is connected to slide 25 which has the tubular extension 26 extending into bore 19 and spring 20 extends into said extension 26, as shown.
Pin 27 is positioned in an opening in a hole 28 in body portion 10 and is secured at one end 29 to slide 25. Its opposite end 30 is adapted to engage internal shoulder 31 2,762,174 Patented Sept. 11,1956
The adapter 12, mandrel 35, wedge 34-and'stone are generally similar tothat shown in Sunnen. Patent 1,989,831 and are generally available in most machine shops and can be readily. employed'inconnection with the device'of the present invention.
It is pointed out that the thread 16 on the shank portion 15 is a left hand thread and when the device is mounted in any spindle that rotates in opposite or right hand direction and adjusting sleeve 18 is' at its farthest open position, any drag or holding of sleeve 18 will cause it to advance toward body 12 thereby efifecting advance of slide 25 through actuation of pin 27 by sleeve18 against the force of spring 20 and thereby efiect advance of wedge 34 in its slot in mandrel 3 5, and the stone is advanced or retracted in the usualmanner as all honing machines except that the rate of advance or stone pressure is controlled by the operator through a sense of feel of his hand on sleeve 18 without stopping the operation of the machine. To retract the stone, the spindle must be stopped and sleeve 18 rotated in the opposite direction allowing spring 20 to draw back the wedge or drive 34.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple, compact, economical and yet eflicient portable honing device that can readily take advantage of conventional adapters, mandrels and stones which the customer already has and whereby it is possible to convert any lathe, milling machine or other revolving spindle into a honing machine.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided new and improved means for obtaining all of the objects and advantages of the invention.
I claim:
