Application July 6, 1953, Serial No. 366,329 2 Claims. (Cl. 229-87) This invention relates to a packaging device for wrapped products.

The invention relates to a packaging device for wrapped products such, for example, as sliced bacon, which may be adjusted to strips of bacon substantially varying in length.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide a packaging device which may be formed integrally of a sheet of paper board and rapidly manipulated to package the materials to receive a wrapper which is desirably of transparent heat sealable material.

Second, to provide a packaging device having these advantages which may be economically produced and manipulated.

Further objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is described in the claims. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a completed package embodying the packaging device of my invention.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the device set up to accommodate the longest product for which it is adapted.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the device set up for a shorter product.

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the packaging device in a flat or collapsed form.

Fig. 5 is an end perspective view of the device set up or erected as shown in Fig. 3.

In the specification and claims I use the term side and end in the broad sense and for convenience in description, rather than designating relative dimensions of the device. The embodiment of my invention illustrated is especially designed for the packaging of sliced bacon or other products which are arranged in fan-stacked relationship. The packaged product is indicated at 1 in Fig. 1.

The packaging device illustrated is formed integrally of a sheet of paper board cut and scored to provide a bot tom panel 2, and a side top member 3 hingedly secured to the bottom panel as by scoring indicated at 4. The blank also is scored to provide sectional end members designated generally by the numerals 5 and comprising inner sections 6 hingedly secured to the end edges of the bottom panel by

With this arrangement the end members may be folded to an erected position on the hinging scores 7 when the device is adjusted for short material the end member section 8 being then swung to a horizontal position as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and in effect becoming part of the end top member. When the device is adjusted for long material the outer bottom section 8 is swung to vertical position on the line 9 and the inner end wall section 6 then becomes in efiect an extension of the bottom panel as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

To hold the top members in erected position the top end members are provided with looking tongues 12 on their end edges which may be selectively engaged with the longitudinally spaced slits 13 provided therefor in the top side member 3.

In assembling, the material packaged is arranged upon the bottom panel and the side top member 3 folded inwardly upon the material. The top end panels are then folded inwardly upon the top side panel, the folds in the end members being either on

12, 12 are engaged in the proper slit 13. The wrapper designated generally by the numeral 14 is then applied.

To enable the conforming of the edges to the thickness of the stacked material, the end Wall members are provided with V-shaped notches 15 which are of substantial length and center in the hinging scores for the end member sections. This permits tapering the edges or fitting the device to the tapered edges of the material packaged as is shown in Figs. 1 and 5, when the device is adjusted for either the long material or the short material.

It is quite general practice for packers to produce bacon slices either in 6 inch lengths or 8 inch lengths. The sections of the end walls are of such widths as to accommodate variations in the length of the product for which the device is designed. One of the advantages of the packaging device of this invention is that it results in an attractive package when adjusted to receive the material of either length. This device enables very rapid manipulation in the packing operation to receive the material and to adjust for wrapping.

While the preferred embodiment illustrated has end wall members at each end it is sometimes sufiicient to have only one end wall member. I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other modifications or embodiments which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A packaging device formed integrally of paperboard cut and scored to provide a bottom panel, a side top member hinged to one side edge of the bottom panel, end wall members comprising hingedly connected sections, the inner of which is hinged to the ends of the bottom panel, said end wall members having V-shaped notches extending from the ends thereof with their apexes at the hinging connections for the end member sections, and end top members of a length corresponding substantially to the width of the bottom panel hinged to the outer of said end wall member sections, said end top members having locking tongues on their outer edges, said side top member having slits spaced longitudinally thereof the spacing of the slits corresponding to the width of the end wall member sections, said tongues being selectively engageable with said slits to vary the length of the set up device.

2 A packaging device comprising a bottom panel, a side top member hinged to one side edge of the bottom panel, end wall members comprising hingedly connected sections, the inner of which is hinged to the ends of the bottom panel, said end wall members having V-shaped notches extending from the ends thereof and centering in hinging connections for the end member sections, and end top members hinged to the outer of said end wall member sections, said end top members having integral locking tongnies on their outer edges, said side top member having longitudinally spaced slits therein, said tongues being selectively engageable with said slits to vary the length of the set up device.
