WILLIAM H EBDON,'OF NEW BRIGHTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN CLOTH WORKERS OOMPAN Y, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MACHINE FORVOPENING AND MEASURING CLOTH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,037, dated April 17, 1883. Application filed May 24, r882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HEBDON, of New Brighton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Opening and Measuring Cloth, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine for use in the measurement and examination of cloth.
To that end my invention consists in the hereinafter-described machine, by which the cloth is unrolled, opened, measured, spread in convenient position forexamination, and finally rerolled, all by a continuous operation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig.3 is a detail plan view, showing the opening device for double goods. Fig. at is a detail view, showing the counting-dial.
A is the frame of the machine.
a a are rollers fitted at the front side of the machine.
I) is the measuring-roll, provided with guiderollers c c, by which the cloth is kept in contact with the surface of the measuring-roll.
d d are upper guide-rollers, and c is a winding-spit, provided with a crank-handle for use in rewinding the cloth.
The measuring-roll b is fitted at one end with a dial, 1), and counting mechanism, as shown in Fig. 4, for indicating the yards and fractions of a yard, this mechanism being arranged preferably as shown in Letters Patent granted to me June 18, 1878, No. 205,085.
At the front of the machine, and hinged to the upper part of the frame A, is an opening device,f, which, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, consists of a triangular frame extending the whole width of the machine, and which, when let down into the horizontal position, has its apex projecting in front of the machine. This opener is for use with six-quarter goods for the purpose of spreading them to their full width previous to their passage to the measuring-roll, and when not required for use can be turned up out of the way.
In the operation of the machine, either two pieces of three-quarter goods can be operated upon, as shown by the full lines, or a single piece of six-quarter goods, as shown by the dotted lines. In the first case the roll of cloth is suspended from the lower roller 0. in a bag formed of the web by passing it up and forward over the lower roller a, then down under the roll of cloth, then up over the sameroller, 6c and from that over the upper roller a, beneath the guide-rollers c c and over the measuringroll, and thence to the upper guide-rollers, d, and downward to the spit 6. With six-quarter goods the web is passed over the opener f, which acts to spread the goods to their full width, and thence the material passes beneath the lower roller a and front guide-roller c to the measuring-roll, and so on. From the last guide-roller, I), to the winding-spit the goods are held in a spread position, convenient for examination of the surface previous to being rewound, so that the operator, standing at thatplace, can readily examine every portion of the material, as is required.
ltwill be seen that the various operations are continuous, and that by the act of rewinding the goods during examination the length of the piece is at the same time taken. These operations may be performed before sponging and after, and will save much time in handling the goods.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Thecombination, with theframeA,rewinding-spit e, guide-rollers d and c, and measuring device I) b, of the cloth-supporting rollers a a, situated one above the other for the purpose of holding the roll of cloth in a bag formed of the same, as shown and described. 0
.2- The combination, with the frame A, rewinding-spit e, guide-rollers d, measuring device b I)", the front roller, 0, and the rollersa a, of the opening device f, constructed and operated as shown and described.
\YILLIAM HEBDON.
