Description

(No Model.)
J. N. HAZELIP. T0]. FOR GHILDRBNS GARRIAGES,
No. 276,035. Patented Apr. 17,1883.v
NITED STA ES Enron.
' ATENT JOSEPH N. HAZELIP, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,035, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed November 17, 1882.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. HAzELiP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Childrens Carriages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the aceompany ing drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a carriage embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the canopy-top detached. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is the body of a childs carriage.
B is an iron attached thereto by screws or in any desired manner, and forms the lower portion of the standard. It will be understood that there are two standards, one on each side of the carriage, the parts of which are duplicates, in consequence of which a description of one will do for both.
C is the middle portion of the standard, and is pivoted to the part B, and may be adjusted forward and backward thereon and held when so adjusted by the means shown or any other desirable means for accomplishing those objects.
D is the upper portion of the standard, and is adjustable in height on the part 0, being slotted at d to receive a set-screw, c, which passes into a threaded hole in said part 0. The part 0 has also a loop, 0, through which the lower end of D passes to stiffen the joint between the parts 0 and D. The part D is divided into three branches, D D D. To the central branch, D, is rigidly attached a bow, E, while to the outer branches, D D, are pivoted the ends of two bows, E E These'bows are covered, after the manner of an ordinary gig-top, with oil-cloth, leather, or any other suitable flexible fabric, and are provided with suitable ornamental fringe and lining.
For the purpose of folding the top 1 provide the following means: On'top of the middle how I mount by screws, nails, or otherwise, an iron, G, of suitable ornamental design, and having at front and rear means for pivotally connectin g it with the toggle-joint irons F F, said connection being made at f f. The outer links of these togglesare pivoted at e e to the outer bows E B. By this means either the front or (No model.)
rear bow, and with it its top, may be folded toward the central bow and held either folded or open, while the mechanism is entirely on top of. the canopy within easy reach of the nurse without disturbing the child. The whole canopy can be raised or lowered and held as tween the parts 0 D. The whole canopy may also be moved forward or backward on the pivot which connects the parts B and O. The advantages of these adjustments will be apparent at a glance.
Havingfully described my invention, lclaim as new-- 1. The combination, with the side standards of a childs carriage, of a top having vertical adjustment thereon, said top being composed of a rigid central bow and forward and rear folding bows, each being connected with the rigid how by means of a single centrally-arranged toggle link or brace, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the standards, and the top having rigid central bow and folding front and rear bows, of the toggle-links F F, pivoted to lugs arranged centrally upon said bows, and extending thence outside of or above the canopy to points of attachment centrally located upon the rigid how.
3. Acanopy-top for childrens carriages, consisting of the central rigid bow and the forward and rear bows, E E the latter being pivoted at each lower end toothe side pieces, and being provided with a single centrally-located projection or lug extending above the canopy, and each bow being connected with the rigid bow by means of a single toggle-link pivoted at one end to one of said lugs, and extending thence above the canopy to a central projection or arm upon the rigid how, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. Acanopy-top for childrens carriages, consisting of a single central rigid bow, front and rear bows folding and unfolding toward and from said rigid bow, and a single toggle-link connecting the latter with each of the folding bows, each link being pivoted to lugs or projections upon said bows, which extend above the canopy, whereby said'toggle-links may be operated from the outside, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.
