SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,033, dated April 17,1883.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, DARIUS W. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fiskdale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Metal Dies for Dropping or Heading Angers, Auger-Bits, and other Boring-Tools, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to an improvementon the die described in United States Letters Patent No. 151,325, granted to Wm. Tucker, May 26,1874, said die being adapted to be clamped or otherwise fastened to the bed of a drop-press, and to receive a bit or other borin g-tool to he headed or dropped, said heading or dropping being then effected by the descent of the drop or hammer, carrying a suitable die for forming the screw-point and spurs. The lower die is provided with suitable projections to enable it to produce the side cuts on and give the requisite inside impression to the end or head of the auger; and my improvement particularly relates to the strengthening of these projecting parts of the lower die by forming a ridge extending from and forming an abutment for each projection on the two-part lower die, in the manner hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of one member of the twopart lower die embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, showing a bit or anger in place therein. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, looking to the left. Fig. 4 is a section on the same line,looking to the right.
The blocks of metal F, forming the stocks of the lower dies, and having suitable crimps, forming a spiral bore, 2, to receive the auger or bit, are clamped or secured in any manner to the bed of a drop-press, so as to be capable of clamping between them the twisted auger X, to be operated upon. Undercut grooves f [are formed in the stocks F, within which grooves slide guides g on the under surface of the hard-metal dies G. These dies, when in position, are firmly secured to the stock F by screws H. The adjoining faces of the dies G have vertical concavities provided with the ordinary crimps, forming a continuation of the bore 2 for clamping the auger. The top of the dies G is provided with segmental projections or anvils y, terminating the twists, the same being concentric with the bore 2, and of the height of the required side cuts of the auger.
The dies, as provided with these projections, are adapted to give the required inside impression to the end or head of the anger, the impression on the outer side or extreme end of the auger being made by an upper die carried by the drop or hammer of the press, in manner substantially as described in the patent before referred to.
To render the projections or anvilsy stronger and enable them to resist the crushing effect of the drop is the object of my invention, and this object 1 accomplish effectually by making the dies G'with ridges or abutments R, extending from the projections 31 across or partially across the face of the die. These ridges are made of sufficient height to serve as strong abutments for the anvils y, but are not made high enough to interfere with the descent of the drop or formation'of the side cuts of the auger.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what Iclaim as new therein:
The dies G G, adapted to hold and form the heads of angers, auger-bits, or other boringtools, and having projections y and abutments R for strengthening the same, substantially as described.
