ALBERT CHAPMAN, OF OORUNNA, MICHIGAN.
STOCK-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,998, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed February 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT UHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oorunna, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Stock-Gar, of which-the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to stock-cars, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient car in which the stock will suffer as little inconvenience duringtransportation as possible, and can be conveniently watered and fed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved stock-car with the top removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the car on the line 3 y of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line a a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the side of the car through which the stock are fed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the double feed and water trough.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the. car, which comprises the usual bottom, B, ends (3 0, top I), and sides E F, re spectively, in the latter of which is provided an entrance-door, G. Inside the car, and at each side, are arranged a longitudinal series of uprights, H I, respectively on the sides E and F, the uprights of these series being as far apart as the width of the stalls or compartments J. The uprights H and I are connected at their tops by tranverse beams K, to which are secured, at some distance from the side E, beams L, extending down to the floor of the car.
To the beams L are hinged gates M, that serve to divide the different stalls or compartmentsJ, and are provided with a suitable latch that is arranged to engage a catch on the beams I to secure the gate in position. These gates are preferably formed of two sections, N O, the latter ofwhich is hinged to the beams L, while the former is hinged to the section 0 and is provided with the latch. The main section 0 is provided with a bolt, P, by which it can be secured in place and only the section N be used.
Q designates longitudinally-disposed partitions that are arranged between the beams L and serve to divide off the manger R from the stall. Under some circumstances it is desirable to form these partitions Q of two hinged sections, S S, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, arranged to swing on the beams L, and to be secured together at the center, as shown at T.
Above the partitions Q are arranged longitudinally-disposed strips U, which prevent the stock from getting their feet over the manger, and obviate any other damage liable to result from movement on the part of the animal.
V designates one of the double troughs, which consists of a box having a recess, W, formed in one side, at about the center, this recess being to receive the beams H, on which the trough is adapted to vertical movement, and by which it is retained in position with one halfin one manger and its other half in the adjoining one. The trough is arranged to be divided by a stripor partition, X, placed down between its sides at the central recess portion.
The side E of the car on which the mangers are arranged is provided with doors Y, through which the feed can be placed in the mangers, and any other inspection efi'ected.
Water can be fed into the trough by means of a long-necked removable funnel, Z, adapted to be placed in any one of a series of openings, A, in the top of the car over the troughs; or the doors Y can all be opened, and a longitudinal main feed-pipe, B be hung on hooks C (J at the side E of the car, and be provided with smaller branch pipes, D leading to the troughs. By this latter system all the troughs can be filled at once.
I claim as my invention- 1. As an improvement in stock-ears, the combination of the side upright-s, H I, the transverse top connecting-beams, K, the beams L, extending from the latter to the floor and carrying the hinged gates, the partitions Q,
arranged between the beams L, and rods or eross bars U, secured on the beams L, ust
above the partitions Q, as set forth.
2. The combination, in astock-car, ofthe body of the car, the side uprights, H and I, the transverse top connecting-beams, K, the beams L,
extending from the latter to the floor, the gates M, hinged to the beams L, the partitions Q, In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the rods or bars over the latter and secured to my own I have hereto aifixed my signature in the beams L, the double feed-trough, having an presence of two Witnesses.
about centrally arranged recess by which it is ALBERT CHAPMAN. 5 arranged on the beams H, and the openings Witnesses:
or doors in the side of thecaropening into the CHARLES HOLMAN,
troughs and manger, as set forth. H. O. TEEPLE.
