GAS OFF-TAKE SYSTEM OF COKE OVEN BATTERY Ernest Thompson, Jr., Darien, Conn., assignor to Allied Chemical & Dye Corporation, New York, N. (Cl. 202-256) This invention relates to apparatus for the recovery of by-products from coal distillation and more particularly refers to a new and improved elf-take system of a coke oven battery for the discharge of distillation products resulting from the carbonization of coal in a coke oven battery.
The objects of the present invention are to provide an off-take system for the passage of distillate by-products from a coke oven battery which is low in cost, simple in construction and design, and has a liquid seal valve embodied in one single unit readily accessible for cleaning and replacement. Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following discussion and accompanying drawings.
In accordance with the present invention the gas offtake assembly connected to a coke oven battery for removal of by-product distillate resulting from the carbonization of coal comprises in combination an elongated unitary gas collecting main disposed in a substantially horizontal position, preferably slightly inclined from the horizontal to induce draining of liquor therethrough, having a relatively thick sloping side plate disposed at an angle of about 3Q-60 from a vertical axis, preferably about 45, said sloping side plate having a plurality of spaced openings through which distillate by-products from the coke oven battery discharge into the gas collecting main, said gas collecting main being preferably bounded on its other sides by sloping bottom plates, a substantially horizontal top plate joining one end of the sloping side plate, a long vertical side plate and a short vertical side plate joined to the sloping bottom plates with the top of the long side plate joined to the horizontal top plate and the top of the short side plate joined to the bottom of the sloping side plate, said horizontal top plate being provided with a plurality of openings for the introduction of liquid through spray pipes, a plurality of vertical refractory lined uptake pipes extending from the coke ovens in the coke oven battery, a flanged up-take elbow connected to each uptake pipe, an up-take cover with hinge lever adapted to be opened and closed on the top of said up-take elbow, a downwardly descending elbow connected at one end to the flanged up-take elbow and having its other end extend into the collecting main through an opening in the sloping side, said downwardly descending elbow having an opening for the introduction of liquor, said opening in the sloping side of the gas main being provided with a flanged sleeve into which the end of the downwardly descending elbow extends and further provided with packing between said elbow and flanged sleeve to maintain a gas-seal, a flanged valve housing on the sloping side connected to the flanged sleeve, a pivotal basin movable by a lever adapted to form a liquid seal by the walls of the flanged sleeve immersed in liquid in the pivotal basin disposed immediately below the flanged sleeve when it is desired to maintain a liquid seal and adapted to permit the flow of gas therethrough by pivoting the basin downwardly away from the flanged sleeve.
My invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings in which similar reference numerals are used to designate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is an isometric view of the gas off-take assembly constructed in accordance with the present invention for the discharge of distillate by-products from the coke oven comprising the combination of a portion of a gas collecting main having up-take pipes, connecting elbows and pivotal liquid seal valve structure;
Figure 2 is a view, in longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the gas off-take system of Figure 1, parts being broken away;
Figure 3 is a section in elevation taken along line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a view in perspective and in greater detail of the liquid-seal basin and lever shown in Figure 3.
Referring to Figure 1, gas collecting main 1 into which the distillate from an entire coke oven battery enters extends horizontally for the length of the coke oven battery, say a distance of about 40-200 feet and is about 5 feet high and 4 feet wide at its farthest points. The long vertical side 2, sloping bottoms 3 and 4 and short vertical side 5 may be fabricated from a single piece of approximately /8 thick metal to which is welded a substantially horizontal top plate 6. Sloping side 7 disposed at an angle of about 45 is welded at its upper end to top 6 and at its lower end to vertical side 5. Sloping side 7 should desirably be of increased thickness, about 1 thick to permit bolting thereon of flanges without the necessity of welding thickness plates or other means to provide adequate support for the flanges thereby reducing the cost of construction and simplifying the design. A series of spaced holes designated by numerals 8 and 9 are cut in sloping side 7 for the introduction therethrough of distillate by-products from the individual ovens in a coke oven battery. Flanged sleeve 11 and valve housing 12 are bolted to sloping side 7 by means of fastening bolt or tap bolt 13. Also flanged sleeve 11 and valve housing 12 are joined together by means of bolts 14. Thus the sleeve and valve housing are bolted together and both units are bolted to the sloping surface of the main. The construction is such that either sleeve or housing can be removed and replaced separately, or, if desired, the two can be lifted off the main together. As the valve is subjected to the action of corrosive gases and to depositions of tar carried by the distillate vapors it becomes necessary from time to time to clean, repair or replace the liquid seal valve. Since each valve is part of the unitary structure of the gas main involving the entire coke oven battery, the importance of making the necessary repairs or effecting cleaning is not a mere loss of time and cost of repairing a single valve but is reflected in shutdown time for an entire coke oven battery. The present simplified construction facilitates removal of the housing of valve sleeve and permits repair or replacements in a minimum of time. Extending from housing 12 are shaft 15, hub 16, counterweighted lever 17 and weight 18. Gas and vapor pro duced by carbonization of coal passes upwardly through rip-take pipe 19, flanged up-take elbow 21, discharging down through downwardly curved elbow 22 through hole 8 in sloping side plate 7 into collecting main ,1. Ribs 23 along the flange of up-take elbow 21 provide additional rigidity and Strength. A discharge opening in flanged up take elbow 21 is normally kept closed by tip-take cover 24 to which is attached hinge lever 25 for moving cover 24 to open and closed position. Liquor for scrubbing and cooling Dy-product distillate from the coke oven is fed through spray pipe 26 into elbow 22 in intimate contact with the gases and vapors passing down therethrough. The liquor also serves to form a liquid seal when it collects in basin 31 at the bottom of elbow 22. Additional liquor is introduced through a plurality of spray pipes 27 in intimate contact with the gases in col lecting main 1. Liquid settling to the bottom of collecting main 1 is discharged by continuously flowing along the downwardly inclined bottom of the collecting main.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal elevation showing gas collecting main 1 and three up-take pipes 19 leading from three ovens in a coke oven battery with connecting elbows 21 and 22 entering the gas main through openings at spaced points along sloping side plate 7 disposed above short vertical side 5 and sloping bottom 4. Part of up-take pipes 19 on the left hand portion of Figure 2 are broken away to illustrate more clearly and in greater detail the construction of the gas off-take assembly. Referring to the right hand portion of Figure 2, refractory lined uptake pipe 19 is bolted to flanged up-take elbow 21 by means of bolts 28. Sealing an opening in the top of uptake elbow 21 is up-take cover 24 to which is attached hinge lever 25. Flanged up-take elbow in turn is bolted to downwardly curved elbow 22 by means of bolts 29. Flanged sleeve 11 into which elbow 21 extends is fastened to sloping side plate 7 by means of tap bolts 13. Valve housing 12 is also fastened to sloping side plate 7 by means of tap bolts 13 and flanged sleeve 11 and valve housing 12 are joined by means of bolts 14. A portion of the up-take pipe 19 in the center of Figure 2 is cut away to more clearly show downwardly curved elbow 22 entering sleeve 11 and also counterweighted lever 17, weight 18 joined by hub 16 to shaft 15. Liquid-seal basin 31 attached to shaft by hinge lugs 32 is shown in dotted lines. Up-take cover 24 in open position is also indicated in dotted lines.
On the left hand side of Figure 2, flanged up-take elbow 21 is completely cut away and also a section of valve housing 12 is cut away to show in greater detail the construction of the liquid-seal arrangement. As shown in the section of elbow 22, spray pipe 26 feeds liquor to spray nozzle 33 down through elbow 22 in intimate contact with gases from the coke oven and thence into gas collecting main 1. When the liquid-seal valve is closed by means of lever 17 and weight 18 the liquid flows into basin 31 to form a liquid seal and excess liquid overflows from basin 31 into gas collecting main 1. Lever 17 is joined to hub 16 which in turn is fastened to shaft 15, which shaft is supported by hearing hubs 34. Basin 31 is joined to shaft 15 by means of hinge lugs 32.
In the side sectional elevation of Figure 3 may be seen up-take pipe 19 having refractory lining 35 joined to flanged up-take elbow 21 by means of bolts 28 with the up-take elbow 21 closed by up-take cover 24 attached to hinge lever 25. When the oven is empty, up-take cover 24 is maintained in open position as shown by the dotted lines and liquid seal basin 31 is maintained in closed position as shown in dotted lines. Flanged up-take elbow 21 is connected to downwardly curved elbow 22 by means of bolts 29. Liquor pumped through spray pipe 26 is sprayed through nozzle 33 in contact with the gas flowing through elbow 22. Downwardly curved elbow 22 extends into sleeve 11 and disposed therebetween is packing 36. The construction of elbow 22 and sleeve 11 is such as to permit expansion and still maintain a gas tight seal. Sleeve 11 and valve housing 12 are bolted to sloping plate 7 by means of bolts 13 and the sleeve and valve housing are joined together by means of bolts 14 thus forming an easily assembled simple unitary structure which is readily accessible for cleaning or replacement with consequent reduction in investment and maintenance costs. Basin 31 mounted on shaft 15 may be moved to open or closed position by means of lever 17 and weight 18 as shown by the dotted lines. Gas collecting main 1 into which distillate by-products from the coke oven discharges via pipe 19 and elbows 21 and 22 is bounded by sloping side plate 7, top plate 6, vertical side plates 2 and 5 and sloping bottom plates 3 and 4. Liquor is introduced into gas collecting main 1 through spray pipe 27 and spray nozzle 37. Liquor collecting in gas collecting main 1 drains down along slightly inclined bottom plates 3 and 4.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the liquor-seal device consisting of basin 31, hinge lugs 32 mounted on shaft 15 attached at one end to hub 16 which in turn is connected to counterweight lever 17 on which is mounted movable weight 18.
Although certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been disclosed for purpose of illustration it will be evident that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.

A gas off-take system for removal of by-product distillate resulting from the carbonization of coal in a coke oven, comprising in combination an elongated unitary gas collection main extending substantially horizontally along the length of a coke oven battery, said gas collecting main being bounded on one side by a sloping plate disposed at an angle of about 30-60 from the horizontal, said sloping side plate having a plurality of spaced openings through which distillate byproducts from the coke oven battery discharge into the gas collecting main, said gas collecting main being further provided with a plurality of openings for the introduction of liquid through spray pipes, a plurality of vertical refractory lined Lip-take pipes extending from the coke ovens in the coke oven battery for the removal of distillate byproducts, a flanged up-take elbow connected to each tip-take pipe, a hinged tip-take cover with lever adapted to be opened and closed on the top of said Lip-take elbow, a downwardly descending elbow connected at one end to the flanged tip-take elbow and having its other end extend into the collecting main through an opening in the sloping side plate, said downwardly descending elbow having an opening for the introduction of liquor for washing and cooling the gaseous by-product distillate passing therethrough, said opening in the sloping side wall of the gas main being provided with a flanged sleeve into which the end of the downwardly descending elbow extends, a flanged valve housing on the sloping side wall connected to the flanged sleeve, a movable basin adapted to form a liquid seal by the walls of the flanged sleeve immersed in liquid in the movable basin disposed immediately below the flanged sleeve and adapted to permit the flow of gas therethrough by moving the basin away from the flanged sleeve.

A gas off-take system for removal of by-product distillate resulting from the carbonization of coal in a coke oven, comprising in combination an elongated unitary gas collecting main extending along the length of a coke oven battery and slightly inclined from the horizontal to induce draining of liquor therethrough, said gas collecting main being bounded on one side by a sloping plate disposed at an angle of about 45 from the horizontal, said sloping side plate having a plurality of spaced openings through which distillate by-products from the coke oven battery discharge into the gas collecting main, said gas collecting main being further provided with a plurality of spaced openings through which distillate by-products from the coke oven battery discharge into the gas collecting main, said gas collecting main being further provided with a plurality of openings for the introduction of liquid through spray pipes, a plurality of vertical refractory lined up-take pipes extending from the coke ovens of the coke oven battery for the removal of distillate by-products, a flanged up-take elbow connected to each up-take pipe, a hinged up-take cover with lever adapted to be opened and closed on the top of said up-take elbow, a downwardly descending elbow connected at one end to the flanged up-take elbow and having its other end extend into the collecting main through an opening in the sloping side plate, said downwardly descending elbow having an opening for the introduction of liquor for washing and cooling the gaseous byproduct distillate passing therethrough, said opening in the sloping side wall of the gas main being provided with a flanged sleeve into which the end of the downwardly descending elbow extends, and further provided with packing between said elbow and flanged sleeve to maintain a gas-seal, a flanged valve housing on the sloping side wall connected to the flanged sleeve, a pivotal basin movable by a lever adapted to form a liquid seal by the Walls of the flanged sleeve immersed in liquid in the pivotal basin disposed immediately below the flanged sleeve when it is desired to maintain a liquid seal and adapted to permit the flow of gas therethrough by pivoting the basin away from the flanged sleeve.

A gas off-take system for removal of by-product distillate resulting from the carbonization of coal in coke ovens, comprising in combination an elongated unitary gas collecting main extending along the length of the coke oven battery, said gas collecting main being bounded by a relatively thick metal sloping side plate of about 1" thickness disposed at an angle of about 45 from the horizontal, two sloping bottom plates, a substantially horizontal top plate joining one end of the sloping side plate, a long vertical side plate and a short vertical side plate joined to the sloping bottom plates with the top of the long side plate joined to the horizontal top plate and the top of the short side plate joined to the bottom of the sloping side plate, said bottom plates, top plate and vertical side plates having a metal thickness of about /5", said sloping side plate having a plurality of spaced openings through which distillate byproducts discharge in the gas collecting main, said horizontal top plate being provided with a plurality of openings for the introduction of liquid through spray pipes, a plurality of vertical refractory lined up-take pipes extending from the coke ovens in the coke oven battery, 21 flanged up-take elbow connected to each up-take pipe, an tip-take cover with hinge lever adapted to be opened and closed on the top of said up-take elbow, a downwardly descending elbow connected at one end to the flanged up-take elbow and having its other end extend into the collecting main through an opening in the sloping side, said downwardly descending elbow having an opening for the introduction of liquor, said opening in the sloping side of the gas main being provided with a flanged sleeve into which the end of the downwardly descending elbow extends and further provided with packing between said elbow and flanged sleeve to maintain a. gas-seal, a flanged valve housing on the sloping side connected to the flanged sleeve, a pivotal basin movable by a lever adapted to form a liquid seal by the walls of the flanged sleeve immersed in liquid in the pivotal basin disposed immediately below the flanged sleeve when it is desired to maintain a liquid seal and adapted to permit the flow of gas therethrough by pivoting the basin downwardly away from the flanged sleeve.

A GAS OFF-TAKE SYSTEM FOR REMOVAL OF BY-PRODUCT DISTILLATE RESULTING FROM THE CARBONIZATION OF COAL IN A COKE OVEN, COMPRISING IN COMBINATION AN ELEONGATED UNITARY GAS COLLECTION MAIN EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY HORIZONTALLY ALONG THE LENGTH OF A COKE OVEN BATTERY, SAID GAS COLLECTING MAIN BEING BOUNDED ON ONE SIDE BY A SLOPING PLATE DISPOSED AT AN ANGLE OF ABOUT 30-60* FROM THE HORIZONTAL, SAID SLOPING SIDE PLATE HAVING A PLURALITY OF SPACED OPENINGS THROUGH WHICH DISTILLATE BY-PRODUCTS FROM THE COKE OVEN BATTERY DISCHARGE INTO THE GAS COLLECTING MAIN, SAID GAS COLLECTING MAIN BEING FURTHER PROVIDED WITH A PLURALITY OF OPENINGS FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF LIQUID THROUGH SPRAY PIPES, A PLURALITY OF VERTICAL REFRACTORY LINED UP-TAKE PIPES EXTENDING FROM THE COKE OVENS IN THE COKE OVEN BATTERY FOR THE REMOVAL OF DISTILLATE BYPRODUCTS, A FLANGED UP-TAKE ELBOW CONNECTED TO EACH UP-TAKE PIPE, A HINGED UP-TAKE COVER WITH LEVER ADAPTED TO BE OPENED AND CLOSED ON THE TOP OF SAID UP-TAKE ELBOW, A DOWNWARDLY DESCENDING ELBOW CONNECTED AT ONE END TO THE FLANGED UP-TAKE ELBOW AND HAVING ITS OTHER END EXTEND INTO THE COLLECTING MAIN THROUGH AN OPENING IN THE SLOPING SIDE PLATE, SAID DOWNWARDLY DESCENDING ELBOW HAVING AN OPENING FOR THE INTRODUCTION OF LIQUOR FOR WASHING AND COOLING THE GASEOUS BY-PRODUCT DISTILLATE PASSING THERETHROUGH, SAID OPENING IN THE SLOPING SIDE WALL OF GAS MAIN BEING PROVIDED WITH A FLANGED SLEEVE INTO WHICH THE END OF THE DOWNWARDLY DESCENDING ELBOW EXTENDS, A FLANGED VALVE HOUSING ON THE SLOPING SIDE WALL CONNECTED TO THE FLANGED SLEEVE, A MOVABLE BASIN ADAPTED TO FORM A LIQUID SEAL BY THE WALLS OF THE FLANGED SLEEVE IMMERSED IN LIQUID IN THE MOVABLE BASIN DISPOSED IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE FLANGED SLEEVE AND ADAPTED TO PERMIT THE FLOW OF GAS THERETHROUGH BY MOVING THE BASIN AWAY FROM THE FLANGED SLEEVE.
