STATES NITE PATENT FEED-WATER PURIFIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,980, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed November-24, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH N. BOOTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie du Uhien, in the county of Crawford and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Purifiers; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawin g, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
The drawing represents in a sectional view the internal structure of this device.
This invention relates to the class of devices which are designed to purify the feed-water of steam-boilers; and the points of novelty consist in the details of construction, whereby is afforded a simple and efficient agent and means to accomplish the desired ends, all as will now be more fully set out and explained.
In the accompanying drawing, A denotes the body of the purifier, preferably made of boiler-iron, and of any desired shape or size that may be required for use in connection with one or more boilers. Steam is supplied by the pipe B, which leads from the steam -dome or steam-space of the boiler into the top or side of the purifier. Itmay have a suitable cut-off or valve, 1). Water is supplied in any usual way to the feed 0 from a pump, injector, or inspirator by means of the pipe D. This feed 0 is made in basin shape. In it fits a piece, E, adjustable up or down on a screw, 0, by means of the rod 6, for the purpose of regulating the flow of the water or spray. The mere details of this adjustment can be varied at pleasure. The water entering the feed is thrown in a thin sheet or spray against the top or side of the purifier, where it is thoroughly acted on by the steam coming in through the pipe B. Thus all the impurities of the water-such as lime or any sediment-are separated from it and precipitated and fall to the bottom of the purifier A, while the purified water, also fiow-* ing down the space a on one side of the cenbottom. This pipe has a cut-ofi' or valve, h.
tral diaphragm, I will rise in the space a on (No model.)
the opposite side, as indicated by the arrow, and flow on and up till it reaches the pipe G, which connects with the steam-boiler. The diaphragm F is held in position by a crownplate,f, extending inward from the side of the boiler. The pipe G may have a suitable cutoff or valve, 9, at an y desired point in its length. The sediment thus separated from the water may be cleaned out of the purifier in any ordinary way, as by the blow-off pipe H in its The purifier can also be cleaned through the hand-hole I, which is covered in the usual way when not in use.
This device is very simple in its structure and very efiicient in its operation. It will supply pure water to the boiler, so that it will practically be impossible for scale or any like deposit to form therein. This is a desideratum which has been long sought for. This method, by which the feed-water is purified by live steam outside of the boiler, is practically sure to accomplish the desired end.
Having thus described my invention, What 1 consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 7 5 1. In combination with the purifier A, the pipes B and D, feed G, and adjustable piece E, substantially as set forth.
2. In a purifier, as described, the combination of feed 0, adjustable piece E, the partition F f, and outletpipe G, substantially as set forth.
3. In a purifier for feed-water, the feed 0, having adjustable piece E, and placed directly under the inflow of live steam from pipe B, all as set forth.
4. In a purifier for feed-water, the combination of body A, steam-pipes B and G, waterpipe D, feed 0, adjustable piece E, diaphragm Ff, flow-off pipe H, and hand-hole I, all as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH N. BOOTH.
I Witnesses:
