4 Claims. (CL 120 -33) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in article holders and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a device for supporting material to be copied relatively close to the platen of a typewriter, and which device is also capable of supporting papers, books, cards and the like in a conveniently visible position.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a copy holder including an elevated holding member and side supports for the holding member which are provided with forwardly facing recesses that will accommodate the ends of a typewritten platen over which the holding member is supported.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a copy holder including a swingably mounted rectangular wire frame that will overlie copy material and which slidably supports a line guide over the copy material.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a copy and card holding device of the aforementioned character that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, neat and attractive in appearance, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a group perspective view of one form of the present invention and showing the side supports spaced from the holding member;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of Figure 1 and showing the side supports engaged with the holding member;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of Figure 2 and showing copy material on the holding member and the invention disposed in position to a typewriter (dotted lines);
Figure 4 is a group perspective view of the invention in modified form; and,
Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Figure 4 in use and disposed in position to a file drawer and holding file cards.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, and more particularly to Figures 1, 2 and 3, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, the numeral represents a holding member, preferably of sheet metal having a bottom horizontal wall 12 and a rear vertical wall 14 that extends upwardly from the bottom wall 12.
The forward longitudinal edge portion of bottom wall 14 is rolled upwardly and rearwardly to form a horizontal forward sleeve 16. A rear horizontal sleeve 18 is suitably fixed to the rear face of rear wall 14.
A pair of substantially U-shaped wire side supports or leg members 20 and 22 comprise means for supporting 2 r the holding member 10 in an elevated position. The-side: supports20 -and-2Z' are provided with: forward and rear legport iorrs or limbs-24' and 26 "whose upper ends are; bent:
horizontally andz spaced parallel to form perpendicular extensions 28} and 30 which are fitted within the: ends of sleeves 16=a-nd 138 The forward leg portions 24 are bent inwardly-and; rearwardly intermediate their ends to. form forwardly facing concave portions 32 that will accommodateth'e. ends of. atyp'ewriterplaten P to-permit themember10 to overlie th'eplaten P to hold copy material in an easily viewed: position-with the' side supports disposed along opposite: sides of'the typewriter-T.
The terminal hooks 42 of a coil spring 44 are slidably engaged on the end rails 46 of frame 40 and the spring 44 is intended to engage across the copy material M to retain the copy material against wall 14.
A line guide strip 48 extends between the end rails 46 of frame 40. One longitudinal edge of strip 48 is bent to form a sleeve portion 50 whose ends slidably engage the shank portions 52 of channeled slides 54. Sleeve portion 50 is provided with a central slot 56 that slidably receives finger grips 58 projecting laterally from the inner ends of shank portions 52. A coil spring 60 in sleeve portion 50 is biased between the adjacent ends of the shank portions 52 to urge the shank portions apart and the slides 54 against end rails 46. The grips 58 are moved toward each other to permit adjustment of strip 48 on rails 46 or removal of strip 48 from frame 40.
Reference is now directed to Figures 4 and 5 wherein there is illustrated the present invention in modified form. In this embodiment, the holding member 10a is provided with a bottom wall 12a. Bottom wall 12a includes an upstanding forward flange 15 whose upper edge is rolled downwardly and forwardly to form a forward horizontal sleeve 16a. A rear horizontal sleeve 18a is fixed to the rear face of wall 14a.
A pair of substantially U-shaped wire side supports or leg members 20a and 22a support the member 10a elevated and include forward and rear leg portions 24a and 26a whose upper ends are bent horizontally to form extensions 28a and 30a that fit in the ends of sleeves 16a and 18a and which are longitudinally adjustable in the ends of sleeves 16a and 18a to move the supports 20a and 22:: toward or away from each other, whereby the device may straddle a fine drawer D and hold file cards C. An inclined backing B may be placed on member 10a against which the cards rest.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A rack comprising an upwardly facing substantially channel-shaped article holding member having a rear wall and a forward edge portion, an elongated rear horizontal sleeve fixed to said rear wall, a forward horizontal sleeve at said forward edge portion, a pair of substantially U- shaped side supports each of which is provided with forward and rear leg portions, the leg portions having horizontal projections at their upper ends fitted in the ends of said sleeves, said rear wall having a forwardly extending flange at its upper end, a sleeve formed on said flange, a frame having a portion engaged with the last named sleeve swingably supporting the frame, and means slidably carried by the frame for engaging a book supported by the member. 7
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said means includes a coil spring having terminal hooks engaging the frame.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said means in cludes a horizontal line guide strip having a longitudinal sleeve portion, a pair of guides engaging the frame and having shanks slidably entering opposite ends of the sleeve portion, and a spring biased between the shanks urging the shanks apart.
4. A rack comprising an upwardly facing substantially channel-shaped article holding member having a rear wall and a forward edge portion, an elongated rear horizontal sleeve fixed to said rear wall, a forward horizontal sleeve at said forward edge portion, a pair of substantially U shaped side supports each of which is provided with forward and rear leg portions, the leg portions having horizontal projections at their upper ends fitted in the ends of said sleeves, said rear wall having a forwardly extending flange at its upper end, a sleeve formed on said flange, a substantially rectangular wire frame having end rails and also an upper rail engaged in the last named sleeve for rotation, and means slidably engaging the end rails for holding a book engaged with said member.
