M. TENN ISON. MACHINE FOR GRINDING PLOW POINTS. No. 275,792.
Patented Apr, 10,1883. f
n. PETERS. nkwuw nm'mwmm a. Q
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON TENNISON, OF NORTH GREECE, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR GRINDING PLOW-POINTS.
SPECIFICATION forming vpart of Letters Patent No. 275,792, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed October 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON TENNISON, of North Greece, Monroe county, "New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Grinding Plow- Points; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a. plan of the machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partially in section. Fig. 3 is a plan of the guide-bar and its attachments on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of a plow-point and a portion of the guide-bar to which it is attached.
In this machine a grindstone is mounted in a frame, and a guide-bar is employed, to one end of which is attached the plow-point, the other end of the guide-bar having a cylindrical pin which passes through a slot in a vertical turnstile revolving in the frame, by which means the plow-point can be properly guided over the surface of the stone. A sand-box is mounted on the end of the bar, and an inclined chute is located below the box of sufficient width to discharge the sand that escapes from the box directly upon the surface of the stone just back of the point of contact of the plowpoint with the stone in grinding.
The invention consists in the combination of the guide-bar, the sand-box, and the chute, as above set forth.
In the drawings, A shows the frame, which may be of any desired form.
B is a vertical truss of the frame, in which is located the turnstile 0, consisting simply ot'a wooden block having end pivots, a a, which rest and turn in the frame. This block is provided with a slot, 1), for the reception of the pin on the guide-bar.
D is the guide-bar, made of wood, and having a cylindrical pin, 0, at its rear end, which rests in the slot 12, and has such freedom of movement therein that the bar is allowed to play sidewise and up and down to a limited extent to properly guide the plow-point over the stone. I
d is an iron shoe of angular form, bolted to the opposite end of the guide-bar, and to this shoe the plow-point G is secured by bolting or otherwise, standing bottom upward, and at such an incline as to present the edge of the point properly to the stone.
H is the grindstone, which is of ordinary form, and is driven by a pulley, g, on its shaft, or by other suitable means.
I is a sand-box mounted on top of the bar, near the plow-point, and provided with a perforated bottom, through which the sand escapes slowly.
K is a chute or guideway attached to the bar and resting under the sand-box, also extending forward in an inclined direction, so as todirect the sand on top of the stone and directly back of the contact of the plow-point with the stone. The chute is made of considerable Width, so that in the lateral play of the guide-bar from side to side to bring dilferout parts of the edge of the plow-point on the stone the chute will still cover the stone and discharge the sand thereon at all times.
In this apparatus the operator stands on a platform, 71., astride the bar, and holds the lat ter in his hands, guiding the bar from side to side and forward and back, as necessity requires, in grinding the whole edge. He can also bear his Whole weight on the bar. The turning of the turnstile and the end movement of the pin 0 therein allows these movements to be made. The sand passing down the chute and falling on the stone is carried under the plow-point by the turning of the stone, and greatly facilitates the grinding.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe turnstileO, the guidebar D, the sand-box I, and the chute K, the chute being of such width as to cover the stone during the side movements of the bar, as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
