Description

(No Model.)
G. MGALLISTBR.
SPADE, FORK, &c.
No. 275,783. Patented Apr. 10,1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MOALLISTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPADE, FORK, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,783, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed December 5, 1882. (N0 model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES MGALLISTER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Spades, Forks, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to the manufacture of spades or forks audit consists in providing a cast-iron body with sockets on the bottom and top for the teeth and handle, respectively, and on the/back with a lug or projection adapted to perform the function of a lulcrum, and securing to said body a handle and replaceable teeth, which have small width and great depth, and in details ofconstruction, all of which is more fully set forth in following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part thereof. a
The object of my invention is toprovide a suitable spade or fork which shall be especially adapted to the displacement of cobblestones, which becomes necessary in repairing streets or roadways laid with cobblestones. Heretofore this has been done by means ofa crow-bar, which is driven down between said cobble-stones, and then used as a lever to pry them out. By the use of my improved device much time may be saved, and the continual noise due to the striking of the crow-bars upon the stones is greatly reduced.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cobble-stone spade 'or fork. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of same on line w w in the act of prying up a cobblestone. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of same on line y y, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the teeth. v
Ais the cast-iron body, which may be malleableized or annealed, and is provided on the bottom with square or rectangular sockets or holes 0 for the reception of the replaceable teeth D, and on top with a socket, G, for the handle H. If desired, the handle may be made of iron and cast in said body. The body A is further provided on each side of the handlesocket with foot-rests I, and on the back with a fulcrum lug or projection, E, which may be re-enforced by a rib, F. The teeth D may be made of wrought iron or steel, and are provided at their upper ends with square or rectangular pieces d to fit into the sockets G of the body A, and blades of the said teeth are made narrow and deep, the rear edges being preferably curved, as at d. The body in front of the sockets O is curved or depressed, as at B, and the teeth maybe set in a slight curve to correspond to the general shape of cobblestones, and, if desired, the front edges of the teeth may be slightly curved, as at d and in practice it is best to make the 'said teeth substantially triangular in cross-section.
I do not confine myself to the exact construction shown, as it may be varied in many ways without departing from my inventionas, for instance, the teeth may be made integral with the body, and a single foot-rest may be provided in line with the handle.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A spade or fork for displacing cobblestones, which consistsof a body secured to a handle, and provided with sockets for the reception of the teeth, and afulcrum lug or projection formed solid with said body, in combination with said handle, and detachable teeth provided with socket-pieces, substantially as.
set forth.
2. The combination of body A, curved, as at B, and formed with foot-rests 1, projection E, and sockets O, with handle H, and teeth D, having socket-extensions d, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of body A, curved, as at B, and formed with foot-rests I and sockets G, with handle A, and teeth D, having socketextensions 01, the front edges of said teeth being arranged in a curve, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
