FASTENER FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 275,779, dated April 10, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL W. MAHAE, of National Military Home, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and usef'ul Improvements in Sash- Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specilieally pointed out in the claim.

The object of the invention is to produce a sash lock or fastener which shall be efficient in service, simple in construction,and not liable to get out of order, and particularly one which will allow one or the other of the sashes to be secured slightly opened, or more or less open, as will be readily understood from the following desoriptiomta'ken in connection with the drawings which form part thereof, and in whch- Figure l represents a perspective view of my device, and Fig.2 an end view. Fig.3 isa detail view of the swell thumb-piece.

Pure air in inhabited apartments is a desideratum, especially in sleeping apartments. This is provided for in this device, while at the same time all the advantages of a sash -fastener, together with means for adjusting the iniow and outflow of pure and vitiated air, respectively, to suit, are obtained.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a plate secured to the lower rail of the upper sash, having a rigid standard, B, in which is 4o pivoted a flat-headed rotating piece, C, having a swell, c, upon each side of the head.

D represents a plate secured to the top rail of the lower sash, to which is pivoted a horizontal arm, d, formed in one piece with a vertical arm, E, having a vertical slot, e. When the planes of the flattened head of the thumbpiece are arranged vertically the said head passes through the slot e, when, by turning the said head, the swell c holds the sashes in de- 5o sired location by friction.

It will be observed that by this construction in cold weather a proper ventilation, adjustable at will, may be insured in all sleepingapartments and the like, and that either sash may be raised or lowered, as may be desired, the slot e being long enough for that purpose. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

The combination of the plate A, having 6o standard B, and the rotating flat-headed piece C, having swell c, with the plate D and pivoted arm E, having vertical slotl c, as and for the purposes specified.
