1 Claim. (Cl. 308-) This invention relates to printing and slotting machines and more particularly to bed slides used in connection with said machines.
In conventional printers and slotters, the aluminum slide is carried on football bearings. That is, two hearings on each end of the slide and no support in the center; and during high speed operation the center of this slide tends to vibrate and causes the feeder to miss feeding. In addition the ball bearing tightly packed the dirt and paper dust that accumulated in the machine slideways requiring the machine to be shut down and the slides removed and cleaned as well as blowing the accumulated dust out of the machine. This causes a great loss of production.
In the bed slides provided in this invention the slides are supported for their entire length and eliminate vibra tion and errors in feeding. The slides and slide-ways are self cleaning, can be adjusted to take up wear between the slides and side take up ways, and are self lubricated.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a new and improved bed slide, for use with feeding mechanism connected with printers and slotters, that will bei supported for its entire length.
A further object of this invention is to provide for a new and improved slide and feeder mechanism comprising a. slider for adjustably receiving the feeding mechanism for printers and slotters and having means for taking up wear between the slides and slide-way.
A further object of this invention is to provide a new and improved slider and slide-way that will be self cleaning during slider travels.
Other objects will become apparent as the invention is more fully set forth.
For a better understanding of the invention and its objects, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which in conjunction with the following description out-- line a particular form of the invention by way of example while the claim emphasizes the scope thereof.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the'bed plate of a printer and slotter showing the'sheet feeding mechanism connected to the bed slides embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 1.

In the construction shown in the drawings a bed plateis supported on legs 11 and mounted on a base 12. The top face of the bed plate 10 is provided with a slot 13 to receive a pair of side take-up ways 14 adjustably held therein by screws 15 positioned in elongated holes 16 in the bed plate 10. A longitudinal slot 17 and threaded portion 18 are provided in screws 15 toreceive grease 2,756,113 Patented July 24, 1956 from a pressure fitting screwed therein and feed it up to the threaded portion of hole 19 and through hole 20 in the side take-up ways 14 to lubricate the angular faces 21 of the side take-up ways 14 and the angular faces 22 of the aluminum bed slide 23. The bed slide 23 is provided with a T slot 24 to receive a screw 25 and nut 26 that adjustably hold pusher feeders 27 in slot 28 of the aluminum bed slide 23. The pusher feeders 27 comprise a base on which is mounted a spring 29 fitted at its upper end with a pusher 30 having a face 31 that engages and pushes forward a sheet 32 of corrugated board until it is picked up by feed rollers 33 and fed into the conventional printer or slotter mechanism. The sheets 32 are normally stacked up on supports 34 that are spaced on bar 25 to suit the width of the sheets being handled and are attached to the table top or bed plate 10 by screws 36 fastened in nuts 37 slidably mounted in T slots 38 in the top face of bed plate 10. The other end of the sheet rests against an alignment plate 39 which is normally positioned above the bed plate 10 a suificient distance to en able the lower sheet 32 being fed towards the feed rollers 33 to pass under the alignment plate 39, and prevent two sheets from passing at one time. The bed slide 23 is attached to a bracket 40 and moved at predetermined intervals by rods 41 attached to arms 42 mounted on a shaft 43. The shaft 43 is supported in bearings 48 and oscillates through the action of a pin 44 attached to a wheel 45 sliding in a slot 46 in the slide bracket 47 each time the main shaft 49 is rotated through gears 50 by motor 51. Plates 53 are fastened to the table top by screws 54. Scales 55 are placed along the tabletop to assist in setting the supports 34. The bed slide 23 projects beyond both edges of the table as it travels in the table slot, and automatically pushes and removes any foreign matter that may have collected in the slots. The bottom of the table slot is opened a sufiicient distance to allow the brackets 40 to move in the table. The balance of the table slot is closed in at the bottom, and prior to the introduction of this invention would catch and hold any debris that may have fallen into the slot and pack it so tightly that the slide had to be removed and the dirt scraped out by hand. This caused a considerable loss in production.
In the operation of the device the supports 34 are set at the proper distance from the alignment plate 39 to suit the length of the sheets being used and the screws 36 tightened; the pusher feeders 27 are adjusted on the bed slide 23 so its pusher 30 will be pushed downwardly by finger 52 as it moves under supports 34. This allows the front end of the bottom sheet 32 to drop down the face of the alignment plate 39 and enter the space between the lower end of the plate 39 and the top of the bed plate 10. The opposite end of the sheet 32 drops down off the finger 52 and rests on the spring 29 which slides along under the sheet 32 until the face 31 contacts the sheet 32 and pushes it along into the feed rollers 33 which pull the sheet 32 off the pusher feeders 27, and into the printing or slotting machine. The operation of the bed slide is explained above and will not be repeated here.
While but one general form of the invention is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, it is not desired to limit this application for patent to this particular form as it is appreciated that other forms of construction could be made that would use the same principles and come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the inventiomwhat is claimed is:
In a feeder slide, supporting means, a bed plate carried thereby, said bed plate having spaced-apart parallel longitudinal slots therein, a pair of interconnected bed slides, each slide operating in each slot, 21 pair of side take-up ways in each slot on each of the opposite sides of each take-up way, so that each slide works between a pair of take-up ways, means for securing the take-up ways to the table, said means consisting of screws having an axial passage therein and extending through the table and the ways, said ways having a passage therethrough having port openings connected with the axial passage through the screws and with the space in the ways within which the bed-slides operate, whereby lubricant supplied through the screws is supplied to the passage through the guide ways to lubricate the bed slides.
