PACKAGING DEVICE FOR WRAPPED PRODUCTS Filed June 29, 1953 INVEN TOR.
PACKAGING DEVICE FOR WRAPPEDPRODUCTS Kenneth T. Buttery, Kalamazoo, Mich assignor to Sutherland Paper Company, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Application June29, 1953, 'seaa M36451? 2 Claims. (0.229226 This invention relates to a packaging device for wrapped products, that is, products which are arranged on the device and then wrapped.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a packaging device formed of paperboard which is well adapted for the packaging of sliced meats, for example, arranged or stacked in fanned relation which results in variation in the depth of the product.
Second, to provide a packaging device which may be quickly adjusted to erected position after the product has been arranged thereon and elfectively supports the product for wrapping and results in an attractive package.
Third, to provide a packaging device of this character with an effective corner closure means.
Fourth, to provide a packaging device of this character which may be very economically produced from an integral blank or sheet of paperboard.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a package embodying the packaging device of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the erected device prior to application of the wrapper thereto.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section on a line corresponding to 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device in the flat.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating certain steps in the erection of the device.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
In the specification and claims I use the term side" and end for the sake of brevity and convenience description. It will be understood that the packaging may be substantially square, as is illustrated in Fig. l, or it may be elongated, this depending upon the quantity and character of the packaged material.
The packaging device of my invention is formed of an integral sheet of paperboard cut and scored to provide a bottom panel 1 and side and end walls 2 and 3 respectively. These walls are angularly disposed as distinguished from being opposed. The side and end Walls are hingedly connected to the bottom panel as by the scores 4 and 5.
A top member 6 is hingedly connected to the side wall 3 as by the scoring 7 and a top member 8 is hingedly secured to the end wall 2 as by the scoring 9. The end 10 of the end wall 3 is substantially spaced from the hinging connection 4 of the side wall 2 to the bottom panel as is clearly illustrated.
The end 11 of the top member 8 is substantially in alignment with the hinging connection 4 for the side walls to the bottom panel so that the end top member does not project beyond the side wall 2 when the packaging device is erected and so that the end top member may be jfolded-within the side top member, as is best shown in vFig. 2.
To facilitate erecting the end edge of the end top member is beveled or cut away at 12. The side top member .6 provided with an end closure flap 13 hingedly connect'ed theretoat 14. This is desirably tapered inwardly as viewed in thelliilank.v
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive a slit is formed on the .hin'ging line 9 for the top mem- '8 to the end wall and a slit 16 is formed on the gmgline 14 forthe closure member 13. I when in ere'cted'position, as shown in Fig 2, the end wall 3 overlaps the closure flap '13 holding it in erected position. The slits 15 and 16 provide for interlocking engagement of the end top member 8 with the closure member 13 with the end wall on the outer side and the edge portion of the end top member engaging the inner side of the closure member so that the parts are efiectively locked in erected position. In erecting the tongue-like end portion of the end top member in the embodiments of Figs. 1 to 5 is disposed below the side top member. This interlocking engagement described also holds the side top member in erected position.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the interlocking engagement of the top and side top member is modified. The end top member 17 of this embodiment has a tonguelike extension 18 engageable through a slit 19 formed in the side top member 20. In this embodiment the side wall 2 is omitted.
In 'both embodiments the device may be very quickly erected to receive the wrapper indicated at 21. Desirably the side top flap has a diagonal score 22 at its end opposite its closure flap 13 and the end top member 8 has a diagonal score 23 opposite its end 11. The purpose of these scores is to allow the top members to more readily conform to the material packaged.
The packaging device of my invention is well adapted for packaging sliced meat such as, for example, sliced bacon which is arranged in fanned stacked relation for display purposes. This results in the variation in thickness of the packaged material particularly toward one edge thereof. The packaged material is arranged on the bottom panel and the side and end walls swung upwardly and the top members swung downwardly upon the material. The side wall 2 may be swung to an inclined position which allows conforming to the edge of the material packaged.
I have illustrated and described my invention in a highly practical embodiment thereof. I have not illustrated or described other adaptations or embodiments which I contemplate as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A packaging device formed of an integral blank of paperboard cut and scored to provide a bottom panel, angularly disposed relatively narrow side and end walls hinged to the side and end edges of the bottom panel, the end wall terminating in substantially spaced relation to the hinge connection for the side wall to the bottom panel, side and end top members hinged to the upper edges of the side and end walls respectively, the end of the end top member adjacent the side top member being substantially in alignment with the hinge connection for the side wall to the bottom panel, the end top member being beveled from the end thereof to the end of the end wall, the side top member having a tapered closure flap hingedly connected to the end thereof and foldable downwardly in overlying relation to the bottom panel when the side top member is in erected position, the end wall when erected overlapping the inner end of said datented July 24, 1956 weet A closure flap to said side top member and opening at the end edge thereof, and a slit on the hinging line ofthe end top member to the end wall, said slitsdefining'relatively flexible portions facilitating the overlapping engagement of the side and end top members when in erected position.
2. A packaging device formed of an integral blank of the end wall terminating in substantially spaced relation to the hinging connection for the side wall to the bottom panel, side and end top members hinged to the-upper edges of the side and end walls respectively, the side top member having a downwardly foldable closure flap hingedly connected to the end thereof, the end wall when erected engaging said closure flap for holding it in erected! position, there being a slot on the hinging line of said closure flap to said side top member and opening at the end edge thereof, and a slitwon the hinging line of the end top member to the end wall, said slits defining rela tively flexible portions facilitating the overlapping engagement of the side and end top members when in erected position.
