MEN P,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY E. LEA, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM S. BAY, OF SAME PLACE.
METAL-TUBEFORMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,504, dated April 10, 1883.
Application filed May 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY ELFORD LEA, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Metal-Tube Formers, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention relates to improvements in the manner of formin g metal tubes, either straight no or conical, by means of two rollers; I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 being a side elevation; Fig. 2, a longitudinal and vertical section; Figs. 3 and 4 being end views; Fig. 1 5, detached view of roller B C; Fig. 6, crosssection of Fig. 5, cut through dotted lines a c.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Letter A represents the frame for holding.
the rollers; B O, a metal roller divided longitudinally; D, under roller, having the same taper in the opposite direction as roller B O; E, crank; F, lever; G, longitudinal spring; H, bolt and nut; I, clamp; J, pin; K,'slot or 2 journal; L and M, sliding journal-box. N is a pivot-pin, by which the parts of roller B and O are united. O is the lip, under which one edge of the metalsheet is placed and held durthe rolling process.
To effect the purpose of my machine the frame is secured to a bench. Clamp I being slipped off lever F, freeing said roller B G, a portion of the roller is lifted up sufficiently to pass the metal sheet under the lip. The lip 3 5 is forced down upon the sheet, and so held by lever F and clamp I. By revolving roller B G by means of crank E, the metal is wrapped around said roller, and as the same is revolved the metal passes between the upper and lower 40 rollers. To remove the tube from roller B O clamp I is removed, lever F lifted up, and the tube is slipped off the roller.
The object of the spring G and adjustable journal-box L M is to give a yielding pressure to roller B G as it passes the lip B and over- 5 comes the irregularities of the roundness of roller B (l at the part where thelip is attached.
To form tubes more conical or straight the bolts are removed from one end of the frame attaching the ends to the bed-plate and other rollers substituted, either straightor more conical, and the operation then continues, as before described.
In forming tubes varying in taper, or straight, it is of course necessary to employ rolls of corresponding shape. I have only shown one form of roll, as the replacing of rolls with those of different taper or form is a well-known device common to machines of this class.
The object of my invention is to produce a suitable clamp-to hold the edge of a metal sheet which is to form the tube. This I effect by the spring G, upon which the slidingjournal boxes are cushioned, and which secures a uniform pressure upon diderent thicknesses of metal, the roll B (J being composed of the two parts, and hinged so as to swing open and receive the edge of the sheet metal under the lip O and be clamped and held firmly, as has been shown.
What I claim is- 1. The metal roll B 0, being composed of the two parts and hinged as shown, and one of the parts presenting the lip O to receive the edge of the sheet metal, said roll being combined with the roll D, for the purpose of forming tubes, as set forth.
2. The longitudinal spring G, and sliding boxes L and M, in combination with the lever F and clamp I, for the purpose of securing a 80 uniform pressure and binding the clamp, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
H. E. LEA.
