BURlAL-QASKET CATCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,503, dated April 10, 1883.

I am aware that bolts, springs, and catches have been used in burial caskets and vaults; but what distinguishes my improvement from others is the construction and arrangement hereinafter described and claimed.

That the improvement may be fully understood, reference will be had to the following specification, and to the annexed drawings, making part of the same, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the catch; Fig. 2, a view of the under or opposite side of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a view of the catch-plate.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.

To the plate A is connected the slide B, Figs. 1 and 2, by means of a staple, c, and the loop (1, which loop is an upturned section of the plateAandforminganintegral part thereof. To this slide is attached a hook, 0, Figs. 1 and 3,- which extends through a slot or opening, E, in the plate A. Said slot is in length sufiricient to allow the hook to move backward and forward in its attachment to and disconnection from the catch-plate F. In this catchplate is an opening or slot, G, for the hook G, the head of which hook extends through the slot and laps over on the catch-plate in looking the cover to the case. The catch-plate may be attached to the case and the other part to the cover, or vice versa, by means of screws through the holes 6. In either case the result is the same in securing the cover or lid and case together.

When it is required to detach or open the cover or lid of the case by pressing upon the thumb-piece a of the slide, the hook 0 will be forced back from off the plate F, which will admit of the catch-plate being raised or separated from the other part of the catch, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2.

The hook (I is slanting on one side of the head, as seen in Fig. 3. This slant, when brought in contact with the plate in entering the opening G, forces the hook back until the head of the hook has'passed through the slot, when the action of the springH will force the hook C over on the plate F, as seen in Fig. 3, which will effectually lock the case and cover or lid together. By forcing backthe slide B the hook is moved from off the plate F, which admits then of the case being together.

What I claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a burial-casket clasp or catch, the combination of the slide 13, provided with a stem at the back end and a coiled spring thereon, and connected to the plate A by means ofa staple, 0, the hook 0, working through a slot in plate A, and an upturned loop, d, forming an integral part of the plate A, arranged in connection with the plate F, as and for the purpose set forth.
