J., assignor to Keull'el 62 Esser Company, Hoboken, N. 3., a corporation of New Jersey This invention relates to cabinets for storing blueprints, drawings and the like. More specifically it relates to a cover construction which may be provided in each drawer of the cabinet to protect the drawings and prevent them from curling up at the edges.

The principal objects of the invention are a new cover construction for the purpose described which is more readily produced and is more convenient to use than previous constructions which have been proposed for this purpose.

These objects of the invention and the means for their attainment will be more fully understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. l is a view in plan showing the improved drawer construction. The view is split so that half of the figure shows the drawer before the cover was attached and the other half of the figure shows the drawer with the cover attached.

Fig. II is a view in sectional side elevation taken along the line ll-II of Fig. I and looking in the direction of the arrows.

Fig. III is a view in isometric projection of a drawing cabinet containing drawers according to the present invention.

The drawer is preferably constructed of sheet metal and has a bottom 2 bent upward to form a rear wall 4 and front wall 6 conventionally made integral with the bottom 2. A front facing 8 is attached to the front wall 6 preferably by welding and a handle 10 is attached to the front facing 8 by screws or the like as shown. The handles 10 are usually two in number on each drawer and are spaced along the front or" the drawer as shown in Fig. l. The side walls 12 may be provided with inwardly bent portions 14 at the bottom as shown for welding to the bottom 2 of the drawer. The side walls 12 are also joined to the rear wall 4 and the front wall 6 in an appropriate manner.

The side walls 12 conventionally extend backward beyond the rear wall 4 and each carries a wheel 16 which rides on a track provided in the cabinet frame for that purpose. Each may also carry a rubber bumper 18 attached by means of a bracket 20 which may be welded to the side wall 12 or which may be merely cut and pushed out from the material of the wall 12. The upper edges of the side walls 12 are customarily bent outward and downward in an inverted U cross-section forming an edge which rides on a wheel provided in the cabinet frame.

The rear wall 4 is bent backward as shown forming a lip to which the metal sheet 22 is attached as shown by Welding, crimping, buttoning or the like. A bracket 24 is provided in each side wall to support the metal sheet 22. This may be made from the material of the side wall by cutting and punching inwardly as shown.

nited States Patent A fabric covering 26 which may be an artificial leather or the like for covering substantially the rest of the drawer is attached to the front edge of the metal sheet 22 by crimping or buttoning the metal which is bent around the fabric. The sheet metal strip 28 is attached to the forward end of the fabric 26 in the same manner. The strip 28 is curved upwardly as shown to form a hand gripping means. It is also provided with notches 30 which form a tongue 32 opposite each handle 10. As shown in Fig. III, the tongues 32 may be used for engaging the handles of a drawer above to hold the cover out of the way while looking through the drawings stored in the drawer. The cover provided in the top drawer is more conveniently thrown over the top of the cabinet.

A metal angle 34 is attached vertically to the inside surface of each side wall 12 near the front wall 6 to form a projection extending inwardly for substantially the whole depth of the drawer. Slots 35 are provided in the ends of the sheet metal strip 28 for engaging the projections formed by the angles 34 and holding the cover in place over the drawings stored in the drawer.

It will be understood that the metal strip 28 will drop down over the angles 34 an amount depending on the number of drawings in the drawer and will prevent curling of the front edges and corners of the drawings. The back edges of the drawings normally extend below the metal sheet and curling of these edges is prevented thereby. The lifting of the cover off of the drawings and holding it out of the way is also facilitated by the construction described.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

l. A cabinet for drawings and the like comprising a plurality of drawers and a frame for holding said drawers one above the other, each drawer comprising a bottom, two side walls, a rear end wall and a front end wall, a handle secured to the front surface of said front end wall, two metal angles attached vertically to the inner surfaces of the two side walls near the front end wall forming projections extending from the inner surfaces of said side walls throughout substantially the whole depth of the drawer, a metal sheet extending from the top of the rear end wall over a portion of the drawer, a fabric attached to the free end of said metal sheet covering substantially the rest of the drawer and a sheet metal strip attached to the front edge of said fabric provided with slots for engaging the projections formed by said angles extending from said side walls, the front edge of said sheet metal strip being bent upward to form a hand grip and notched to form a tongue for engaging a handle in a drawer above.

2. A cabinet for drawings and the like comprising a plurality of drawers and a frame for holding said drawers one above the other, each drawer comprising a bottom, two side walls, a rear end wall and a front end wall, a handle secured to the front surface of said front end wall, a metal sheet extending from the top of the rear end wall over a portion of the drawer, a fabric attached to the free end of said metal sheet covering substantially the rest of the drawer and a sheet metal strip attached to the front edge of said fabric, the front edge of said sheet metal strip being bent upward to form a hand grip and notched to form a tongue for engaging a handle in a drawer above.
