Description
H. BECHER ARTICLE HOLDER July 3, 1956 Filed May 19, 1954 a I fix mm n T Y N d E E N V% R m m w m 0 United States Patent ARTICLE HOLDER Harold Becher, Brooklyn, N. if. Application May 19, 1954, Serial No. 436,756 1 Claim. (Cl. 211--73) This invention relates to holders for toothpaste tubes and other articles adapted to be positioned on a shelf in a cabinet.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder,
Figure 2 is a side view of the holder installed in a medicine chest and showing tubes retained therein,
Figure 3 is a side View of the holder shown in Figure 1 installed in another type of medicine chest,
Figure 4 is a side view of the holder shown in Figure 1 attached to a wooden shelf, and
Figure 5 is a modified construction of the holder.
The holder or bracket made according to the present invention is preferably made of a flat relatively thin foldable metal blank, such as an aluminum blank, which is suitably stamped and cut to assume the contour shown in Figure 1. The holder consists of a relatively elongated body portion provided with an open channel 11 extending longitudinally thereof at its medial portion. The channel 11 may be enlarged at 11a for a purpose to be explained. The body portion 10 is provided with a pair of relatively narrow upstanding flange portions 12 extending for the entire length of the body portion. A pair of spaced leg portions 14 and 15 extend upwardly from one end of the body portion 10 which in turn are connected to a flange portion 16 provided with an opening 17 for receiving a screw or nail. The other end of the body portion 10 is provided with a bendable V-shaped portion comprised of legs 18 and 19 connected by a fold line 26. Leg portion 20 is connected to portion 19 along fold line 25. Leg portion 20 terminates in a flange portion 21 of substantially the same width as flange 16. A hole 22 is provided in flange 21 for receiving a nail or screw therethrough.
In using the bracket or support shown in Figure 1, the leg portions 14 and 15 at one end of the support are frictionally engaged over the forward edge of the shelf in a cabinet, as shown in Figure 2, and the leg portion 20 at the other end of the bracket is engaged with the opposite end of the shelf. At the same time flanges 16 and 21 will engage the upper surface of the shelf and thereby securely retain the bracket in place. Any article, such as the cap or closure 31a of a collapsible toothpaste tube 31 or the closure 32a of a collapsible tube 32 of cold cream or the like can be inserted through the enlarged portion 11a of channel 11 and then moved into the narrower portion of the channel 11 so that the respective caps 31a and 32a of the tubes will serve to removably support and retain the tubes in suspended position beneath the shelf 30 as shown in Figure 2.
It will be apparent that the flexibility of the V- shaped portions 18 and 19 will permit adjustment of the overall distance between flanges 16 and 21 for varying widths of shelves to which the bracket may be applied. This is illustrated in Figure 3 showing the V- shaped leg portions 18 and 19 brought close together along fold line 26 so as to adapt the bracket for a shelf 40 narrower in width than the one shown in Figure 2.
The bracket may also be attached by means of screws or nails 5 to the underside of a wooden shelf 50 as shown in Figure 4.
A modified construction of the bracket is shown in Figure 5 wherein a pair of V- shaped portions 18 and 19,
and 13 and 19 are provided to permit additional adjustability of the bracket. The support herein described is particularly suitable for use in medicine chests for supporting toothpaste tubes or the like without cluttering the shelves and at the same time making the tubes readily available when needed. The support can be manufactured at low cost as it can be stamped and shaped from a single metal blank. It can be easily installed without tools and is readily adjustable to any desired width by simply manually folding the V-shaped portion as described.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes therefore in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
An article holder formed from a single bendable blank comprising an elongated body portion having an open channel extending for the entire length of said body portion for suspending articles in said channel, a leg portion extending from each end of said body portion for supporting the holder on a shelf, flanges connected to said leg portions for engagement with the shelf, and a V-shaped intermediate portion having one side connected to said body portion and its opposite side connected to one of said leg portions, said V-shaped portion adapted to be folded for adjusting the distance between said flanges.
