UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. WAIN WRIGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.v
MEDICATED ARTIFICIAL NEST-EGG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,297, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed August 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. WAIN- WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Artificial Nest- Eggs,of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists of a hollow shell, artificially prepared, having the resemblance of an egg, whichis bisected in its transverse diameter, for conveniencein placing within a chemical preparation destructive or obnoxious in its character to vermin that infest the bodies and nests of domestic fowls. The shell has, in addition thereto, an elongated slot in one or both ends for the emission of odor from the chemical preparation. A strip of muslin or paper is pasted around the shell at the bisection to securely hold the parts in unity after the cavity is filled. A filling of wax or cement that can readily be removed when desired is inserted in each slot, to prevent the escape of odor from the chamber within the shell previous to use in a nest.
In the accompanying drawingsmhich make a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of the exterior of the egg-shell. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at the line was of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections, looking in opposite directions from the line 3 y of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is the artificial shell, and B the chamber for the reception of a suitable chemical preparation whose active principles are obnoxious and destructive to vermin that infest poultry and nests. The shell is bisected at the rabbeted joint a in its transverse diameter for convenience in filling, after which operation a strip of muslin or paper, D, is securely pasted over the joint to unite the sections. There is an elongated narrow slot, (1, in each end of the shell for the emission of the odor from the chemical preparation contained therein. When the egg is first prepared and exposed for sale in Warerooms, the slots d are filled with wax or cement, (of such composition as to be readily removed,) to prevent the escape ot'odor previous to use in a nest.
I claim as my invention- A nest-egg having the shell A bisected transversely by the joiuta, for the insertion ot'a chemical preparation, each section having a slot, d, in its end for the escape of odor from theinterior of the shell, the said bisected parts being united by means of the strip D, and the slots cl filled with wax or cement, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
. CHARLES n. WAINWRIGHT.
