Furthermore, it is desirable to maintain labels relatively small and consequently, where two separate labels were used, the space occupied by the same was materially increased thereby detracting from the appearance of the garment.

It is accordingly an object of this invention to provide a combination garment label which may be attached to a garment by a single sewing or other securing operation and in which A further object of the invention is the provision of a combination garment label having upper and lower label sections secured to the garment by a common means and section intact on the garment.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a combination garment label which may be provided indicia applied to the section below each slit and with the tape to be severed between the slits to provide individual combination labels.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a combination garment label having an upper section and lower section may be removed merely by severing the stitches, thereby leaving the upper section intact on the garment.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a combination garment label formed of two strips of material in edge to edge relation and secured together at 2,752, 73 Patented July 3, 1956 label section;

With continued reference to the drawing, there is shown in Figs. 1 to 9 a combination garment label constructed in accordance with the preferred form of this invention and in which a label 10 may be secured to a short or other similar 3: garment 11 between the collar 1 and a portion of the body 13 by a single line of stitching 14, in a manner to be later described. As shown in Fig. 4, the label 19 may be formed from an elongated strip 15 of fabric or other suitable material and it is, of course, understood that the strip 15 is of any desired length andthat individual lasels are cut therefrom. Fig. 4 shows only a portion of the strip 15 constituting a single label. As shown, the strip 15 is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending slit 16 terminating inwardly of each end of the strip 15 to provide imperforate end portions 17 and 18. The slit 16 also divides the strip 15 into-upper and

19 and 26 respectively, and with theupper label section 19 bearing indicia 21, such as the name of the store and sizeinformation and the lower. label section 20 bearing other indicia 22, such asa brand name or trade mark indicating the origin of the goods to which the label may be applied.

Slit 16 may be formed by dropping stitches when weaving the strip 15 or such slit 16 may be formed in any other desired manner and it is to be noted, that the upper label section 19 is connected tov the lower label section 20 by spaced stitches 23'extending across the slit 16, as well as by the imperforate end portions 1-7 and: 18.

In order to form the label 10 from the strip 15, the end portions 17 and 1% are folded under the lower label section 20 and upper label section 19 along diagonal fold lines 24 and 25 respectively, as shown in Fig. 2, to provide

26 and 27 extending above the upper label section 19 at substantially right angles to the 30 longitudinal axis of the strip 21. It is to be noted, that the diagonal fold lines 24.- and 25 cross the slit 16 inwardly of the ends thereof and consequently, when the imperforate ends 17 and 18 are folded, as shown in Fig. 2, the slit 16 is open at each end of the label 10, as shown at 23 and B. As will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 3, the lower label section 20 is secured to the upper label section 19 by the spaced stitches 23 and the

In normal use the label 10 would be attached to the garment 11 by the single line of stitching 14 extending across the

26 and 27 and the label would serve to indicate both the name of the store and size information, as Well as the brand name or trademark of the manufacturer. Of course, any other desired information may also be applied to the label. When it is desired to sell the garment at a reduced price'and it is desired to remove any indication of the brand or source. of origin of the goods, it is only necessary to sever the

32 and 33, as well as the stitches 23 along the lineof the slit 16 and thereafter, the lower label section 20 may be separated from the upper label section 19, as shown in Fig. 6, and this will leave the upper label section 19. intact on the garment 11 with no outward indication that the lower label section or any portion of the label has been removed.

It will be seen that by the above described invention there has been provided a combination garment label, a portion of which may be removed at will, without disturbing the means for securing the label to the garment and thereby precluding the necessity of providing and attaching two separate labels to the garment when it is desired to display two different types of information, one of which it may be necessary to remove for certainpurposes.

With particular references to Figs. 10 to 18, there is shown a modified form of the invention in which a combination label 34 is provided with an upper label section 35 and a lower label section 36 and, as shown in Fig. 13, may be formed from two ships 37 and 38' of fabric or other suitable material and placed in spaced edge to edge relation and secured together adjacent the end portions thereof by

39 and 40 and at the center section, by a backing strip 41 which may be secured to the rear surfaces of the strip 37 and 38 by an adhesive or any other d upper label section 35 may suitable means. As shown in Fig. 10, the upper label section 35 may be provided with indicia 42 indicating the store and size information and the lower label section 36 may be provided with other indicia 43 indicating the brand name or trademark of the manufacturer. Of course, if desired, other information may be provided on either the upper or lower label sections.

In order to form the label shown in Fig. 10 from the connected strips shown in Fig. 13, the-end portions 44 of the strip 37 and the end portion 45 of the strip 33 are folded about a common diagonal fold line 46, and beneath the upper and

A still further form of the invention is shown in Figs. 19 to 24 in which a combination label 54 is provided with an upper label section 55 and a lower label section 56. As shown in Fig. 21, this label 54 may be formed from two strips 57 and 58 of suitable material, such as fabric or the like, these strips being disposed in spaced edge to edge-relation and secured together by

59 and 60 adjacent the-ends of strips 57- and 53 and by at least a single stitch 61 disposed substantially midway of the length of strips 57 and 58-.

In order to form the label 54 shown in Fig. t9, the end portion 62. of the strip 57 and the end portion 63 of the strip 58 may be folded about a common fold line 64 beneath the strip 53 and strip 57 to provide

65 and 66 extending above the-upper edge of the upper label section 55 at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis thereof. Similarly, the end portion 67 of the strip 57 and the end portion 63 of the strip 58 may be folded about acommon fold line 69 beneath the strip 58 and strip57 to provide garment attaching tabs 7% and 71 extending above the upper edge of the upper label section 55 at substantially right angles thereto.

Any one of the forms of combination labels constructed in accordance with this invention as described above, may be attached to a garment, such as a shirt, in the manner shown in Fig. 25, in which the collar 12 is formed of two thicknesses of material 72 and 73, and in which the upper edge 74 of the body 13 of the garment 11, as well as the

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A combination garment label comprising a strip of fabric material, an elongated longitudinally extending slit in said strip, said slit terminating inwardly of each end of said strip to provide imperforate end portions and crossing said slit inwardly of each end thereof to provide garment attaching tabs extending above said upper label section at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said strip whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing said stitches thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

2. A combination garment label comprising a strip of material, an elongated longitudinally extending slit in said strip, said slit terminating inwardly of each end of said strip -to provide imperforate end portions and upper and lower label sections separated by said slit, lower label section and spaced stitches extending across said slit and connecting said upper and lower label sections, each end portion being folded under said upper and lower label sections along a diagonal fold line crossing said slit inwardly of each end thereof to provide garment attaching tabs extending above said upper label sections at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said strip whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing said stitches thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

A combination garment label comprising a strip of material, an elongated longitudinally extending slit in said strip, said slit terminating inwardly of each end of said strip to provide imperforate end portions and upper and lower label sections separated by said slit, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section and spaced stitches extending across said slit and connecting said upper and lower label sections, each end portion being folded under said upper and lower label sections along a diagonal fold line crossing said slit inwardly of each end thereof to provide garment attaching tabs extending above said upper label section whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing said stitches thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

4. A combination garment label comprising a strip of material, an elongated longitudinally extending slit in said strip, said slit terminating inwardly of each end of said strip to provide imperforate end portions and upper and lower label sections separated by said slit, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section and means extending across said slit and connecting said upper and lower label sections, each end portion being folded under said upper and lower label sections said slit inwardly of attaching tabs extending above said upper label section whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing said means thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

5. 8. A combination garment label comprising two strips edge relation to along a diagonal fold line crossing each end thereof to provide garment garment label comprising a strip of both strips inwardly of said stitches and outwardly of the ends. of said backing strip to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said strips whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing the tabs for said lower label section to the rear of said upper label section and removing said backing strip thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

9. A combination garment label comprising two strips of material disposed in spaced edge to edge relation to provide upper and lower label sections, indicia on said upper label sections, other indicia on said lower label section, stitches connecting said strips inwardly of the end thereof and a backing strip removably secured to the rear surface of the central portions of said strip to connect said upper and lower label sections, the end portions of said strip being folded under said upper and lower label sections along common diagonal fold lines crossing both strips inwardly of said stitches and outwardly of the ends of said backing strip to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section at substantially right angles to the longitudinal axis of said strips whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing the tabs for said lower label section to the rear of said upper label section and removing said backing strip thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

10. A combination garment label comprising two strips of material disposed in spaced edge to edge relation to provide upper and lower label sections, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section, stitches connecting said strip inwardly of the ends thereof and a backing strip removably secured to the rear surface of the central portion of said strip to connect said upper and lower label sections, the end portions of said strips being folded under said upper and lower label sections along common diagonal fold lines crossing both strips inwardly of said stitches and outwardly of the ends of said backing strip to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing the tab for said lower label section and removing said backing strip thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

11. A combination garment label comprising two strips of material disposed in spaced edge to edge relation to provide upper and lower label sections, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section, means connecting said strips inwardly of the end thereof and central connecting means removably secured to the central portions of said strips to connect said upper and lower label sections, the end portions of said strips being folded under said upper and lower label sections along common diagonal fold lines crossing both strips inwardly of said means and outwardly of said central connecting means to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing the tabs for said lower label section and removing said central connecting means thereby leaving said upper label section intact onisaid garment.

12. A combination garment label comprising twostrips of fabric material disposed in spaced edge to edge relation to provide upper and lower label sections, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section, stitches connecting said strips inwardly of the ends thereof and at least one stitch connecting said upper and lower label sections substantially midway of the length thereof, the end'portions of said strips being folded under said upper and lower label sections-along common diagonal fold lines crossing both strips inwardly of said first named stitches and outwardly of said one stitch to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section at substantially right angles to the longitudinal-axis of said strip whereby said lower label section may be removed'by severing the tabs of said lower label-section and by Severing said one stitch thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

l3. A combination garment label comprising two strips of material disposed in spaced edge to edge relation to provide upper and lower label sections, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section, stitches connecting said strips inwardly of the ends thereof and at least one stitch connecting said upper and lower label sections substantially midway of the length thereof, the end portions of said strips being folded under said upper and lower label sections on common diagonal fold lines crossing both strips inwardly of'said first named stitches and outwardly of saidone stitch to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing the tabs for said lower label section and by severing said one stitch thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.

14. A combination garment label comprising two strips of material disposed in spaced edge to edge relation to provide upper and lower label sections, indicia on said upper label section, other indicia on said lower label section, means connecting said strip inwardly of the ends thereof and central means connecting said upper and lower label sections substantially midway of the length thereof the end portions of said strips being folded under said upper and lower label sections along common diagonal fold lines crossing both strips inwardly of said means and outwardly of said central means to provide garment attaching tabs for said upper and lower label sections extending above said upper label section whereby said lower label section may be removed by severing the tabs of said lower label section and by severing said central means thereby leaving said upper label section intact on said garment.
