BANANA com: EXTRACTION TOOL Filed Aug. 10, 1955 United States Patent Ofiice Eatented June 26, 1956 BANANA CORE EXTRACTION TOOL Henry G. Parker, New Orleans, La.
Application August 10, 1953, Serial No. 373,325
2 Claims. (Cl. 107-1) This invention relates to a combination banana core extractor tool.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved banana core extractor tool. Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description and appended claims, reference being made to the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section, of a banana core extractor tool embodying the novel features of the present invention having an auxiliary member, a clearer and packer, positioned therein;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the banana core extractor tool;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the auxiliary member; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view, partly in section, of the knife blade, showing the tubular portion of the tool in broken lines.
The banana core extractor of this invention comprises a thin walled tubular body 5 adapted to be inserted axially into a banana (not shown), the tubular body having one end flared to provide a handle portion 1 and also to provide a concave recess 2 adapted to fit the contour of a human finger and to permit sealing of the end of the tubular body during extraction of the core, and a longitudinal knife 6 secured within the tubular body 5 having a wedge-shaped cross section providing a knife edge adjacent the opposite end of the tubular body 5 and ex, tending transverse to the axis thereof, the edge being adapted to cut through the banana when the tubular body is inserted into the banana, the knife also having a butt end parallel to the knife edge and lying in a plane transverse to the axis of the tubular body, the butt end being adapted to engage the core and substantially support the same within the tubular body during removal of the core from the banana.
In a preferred modification of the invention, a combination banana core extractor and funnel is provided in which the funnel is useful for filling the banana with solids after the core has been removed.
In operation, the tool is held by the handle 1 and inserted axially into a banana to a depth, for example, of about 3% inches, until the bottom 4 of the handle 1 engages the banana. The tool is then given a half turn to sever the end of the core by the knife 6. A finger, e. g., the forefinger, is then placed over the hole 3 in the funnel to seal the opening during extraction of the tool from the banana. The core is then removed from the tool by means of the auxiliary member 8 which is provided with an enlarged handle portion7 which engages the funnel walls 2 and prevents contact of the lower end of the auxiliary member with the knife 6.
No claim is herewith made for the auxiliary member, the clearer and packer, other than that it is a necessary part of corer.
I claim:
1. A banana core extractor comprising a thin walled tubular body adapted to be inserted axially into a banana, said tubular body having one end flared to provide a handle portion and also to provide a concave recess adapted to fit the contour of a human finger and to permit sealing of the end of the tubular body during extraction of the core, and a longitudinal knife secured within said tubular body having a wedge-shaped cross section providing a knife edge adjacent the opposite end of said tubular body and extending transverse to the axis thereof, said edge being adapted to cut through the banana when the tubular body is inserted into the banana, said knife also having a butt end parallel to said knife edge and lying in a plane transverse to the axis of the tubular body, said butt end being adapted to engage the core and substantially support the same within the tubular body during removal of the core from the banana.
2. A combination banana core extractor and funnel for filling the banana with solids after the core has been removed, comprising a thin walled tubular body adapted to be inserted axially into a banana, said tubular body having one end flared to provide a handle portion and also to provide a concave recess adapted to fit the contour of a human finger and to permit sealing of the end of the tubular body during extraction of the core and also to provide a funnel for filling the banana with solids after the core has been removed, and a longitudinal knife secured within said tubular body having a wedgeshaped cross section providing a knife edge adjacent the opposite end of said tubular body and extending transverse to the axis thereof, said edge being adapted to cut through the banana when the tubular body is inserted into the banana, said knife also having a butt end parallel to said knife edge and lying in a plane transverse to the axis of the tubular body, said butt end being adapted to engage the core and substantially support the same within the tubular body during removal of the core from the banana.
