4 Claims. (Cl. 30-330) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in knives and more particularly to the pro- Vision of easily replaceable blades for the knife.
An important object of the invention is to provide a knife handle constructed of confronting side members having a lever pivoted therebetween and to which the blade is removably secured by pressure subjected to the sides of the blade upon swinging the lever into a closed position in the handle.
Another object is to provide a bifurcated end portion for the handle in which the lever is positioned on an adjustable pivot to apply pressure at the sides of the lever for frictionally retaining the blade in a longitudinally adjusted position in a slot in the lever.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 2;
Figures 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views taken respectively on the lines 4-4 and 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified construction, and
Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of a further modification.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a handle composed of a pair of side members 6 and 7 of elongated construction and secured to each other in confronting relation by a rivet or similar fastener 8 adjacent the rear end portion of the handle and a rivet 9 adjacent the center of the handle. The front end portions of the side members 6 and 7 are reduced in thickness, as shown at 10 and 11 to form a recess or bifurcation 12 therebetween and a two-part pivot 13, composed of an internally threaded sleeve 14 in which a screw 15 is threaded, connects the bifurcated end portions 10 and 11 to each other at the front longitudinal edge of the handle.
A lever 16 is formed with a laterally projecting arm 17 at its front end conforming to the shape of the front end of the handle 5 and is positioned in the recess or bifurcation 12 and is pivoted on the pivot 13. The handle part 18 of the lever is received in a longitudinally extending groove 19 at the back edge of the handle 5 flush with the latter.
The arm 17 of the lever is formed with a slot 20 which extends transversely through the arm and continues in a groove 21 extending longitudinally along the adjacent back edge of the lever. A blade 22, which may comprise a safety razor blade, is placed in tight fitting engagement in the slot 20 and with the rear edge of the blade fitted in the groove 21 and with the rear end of the blade abutting a shoulder 21a at the rear end of the groove. The confronting faces of the side members 6 and 7 of the handle are recessed in the region of the bifurcation 12, as shown at 23, to accommodate the rear end of the blade, while the front end of the blade projects forwardly beyond the front end of handle 5 in an inwardly and outwardly adjustable position to regulate the cutting length of the blade.
The reduced front end portions 10 and 11 of the side members of thehandle and the arm 17 of thelever, in the region of the slot 20, are sufficiently resilient to flex by pressure subjected laterally thereto and the opposing inner faces of the end portions 10 and 11 are formed with buttons 24 adapted to enter recesses 25 in the outer surfaces of the arm 17 when the lever is swung into its closed position at the back of the handle, to lock the lever thereto. The pressure on the outer sides of arm 17 by the sides of the handle will bind the blade in the slot 20 to frictionally hold the blade in position.
The opposing surfaces of the side members 6 and 7 of the handle are also recessed at the rear end thereof to form a compartment 26 to contain spare blades 27 and the compartment is closed at the rear edge of the handle by the lever 16.
Figures 6 and 7 illustrate curved or arcuate handles 28 and 29 respectively and with the lever 30 of Figure 6 pivoted to the handle 23 for swinging inwardly and outwardly at the inside of the arc thereof and with the lever 31 of Figure 7 shown pivoted to the handle 29 for swinging inwardly and outwardly at the outside of the arc thereof.
From the foregoing, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. A knife comprising a handle having a bifurcated end portion and also having a longitudinal groove at one longitudinal edge of the handle, a lever including an arm at one end and a handle portion at its other end, means pivotally connecting the arm of the lever to the handle of the knife for swinging the arm into and out of closed position in said bifurcated end portion, and a blade carried by the arm and swingable therewith, said handle portion of the lever being swingable into the groove of the knife handle to move said arm into a closed position in said bifurcated end portion, and said blade being supported in an outwardly projecting longitudinal position at the bifurcated end portion of the knife handle when the lever is closed.
2. A knife comprising a handle having a bifurcated end portion and also having a longitudinal groove at one longitudinal edge of the handle, a lever including an arm at one end and a handle portion at its other end, means pivotally connecting the arm of the lever to the handle of the knife for swinging the arm into and out of closed position in said bifurcated end portion, and for swinging the handle of the lever into and out of closed position Patented June 26, 11956 in the groove of the knife handle, said arm having a slot extending transversely therethrough, and a blade supported in the slot of the lever in a position with one end of the blade projecting outwardly at the bifurcated end of the knife handle when the lever is closed.
3. A knife comprising a handle having a bifurcated end portion and also having a longitudinal groove at one longitudinal edge of the handle, a lever including an arm at one end and a handle portion at its other end, means pivotally connecting the arm of the lever to the handle of the knife for swinging the arm into and out of closed position in said bifurcated end portion, and for swinging the handle of the lever into and out of closed position in the groove of the knife handle, said arm having a slot extending transversely therethrough, a blade supported in the slot of the lever in a position with one end of the blade projecting outwardly at the bifurcated end of the knife handle when the lever is closed and catch means carried by the lever and engaging the knife handle to lock the lever in closed position.
4. A knife comprising a handle having a bifurcated end portion and also having a longitudinal groove at one longitudinal edge of the handle, a lever including an arm blade projecting outwardly at the bifurcated end of the 10 knife handle when the lever is closed, said arm having a recess in the region of the slot, and a friction locking button on an inner face of said bifurcated end portion and lockably engaged in the recess, and said looking button subjecting the arm to clamping pressure to frictionally hold the blade in the slot thereof.
