Description
N.-L.' BABOOGK.
FIREARM.
No. 27,509. Patented Mar. 20, 1860.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
N. L. BABCOCK, OF NEW HAVEhT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BREECH-LOADING FIRE-ARMS.
Specification foiming part of 'Leiters Patent No. 27,509, dated March 29, 1860.
'10 ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. L. BABCOOK, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Arm or Pistol; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to-the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of the cock and its application, with the pawl or dog, for holding the barrel in close connection with the. stock and breech. and in the ready manner of disengaging the same for loading.
In the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the pistol; Fig.2 is a detached view of the cock, spring, trigger, and pawl or dog; D, the spring; 0, the cock; E, the pawl; E, a top view and E an underside View, and F the spring. (Shown more fullyin Fig. 5.) is an edge view of the cock and its connection with the spring; Fig. 4, the side and edge views of the trigger.
A is the stock, and Bthe barrel. of the arm, and connected by the bolt H. The cock 0, working on the j ournal Lwhen drawn back to a half-cock, will allow the pawl E tobe relieved from the barrel and allow it to tip for loading. As the arm is loaded and the barrel brought up to its proper place, the pawl takes veffect, and when the arm is discharged the cock 0 is brou ht in contact with the pawl E, which has its ack end formed with an inclined plane, and. the cock, at the point where it comes in contact with pawl, is also made on ,an inclination of a higher elevation, so as to with the stock. and this connection and operation take place just beforeand simultaneous with the explosion. It will be perceived that thearm is readily operated.- At the same time the cock is drawn back with a very slight pressure of the thumb on the back end of the pawl itis relieved from the b'.u'rel,;and-as the barrel is again brought to its place, the pawl takes hold of it. The spring, being attached to the sight, bears F gently on the pawl, to give a sure operation. 1
J is set-screw, to regulate the tension of the spring on the cock.
Having thus fully fire-arm, I claim- The combination and arrangement" of the spring-catch and hammer, whereby the detent E is securely held in place and -forced home by the hammer 0, when oonstructedsubstantially. in the manner and for the purposes hereinbefore specified.
described my improved N. L. BABCOOK.
