1 Claim. (Cl. 145-50) This invention relates to screws and screw drivers and is particularly concerned with screw head constructions and screw driver end constructions adopted to drivingly cooperate with the novel head of the screw of the present invention.
Among the primary objects of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved screw and driver designed to facilitate the driving of screw at remote and inexcessible positions.
Another object of the present invention is to provide for the driving of a screw at an axial angle to that of the axis of the screw driver.
A further object of the invention is to provide a screw and driver in cooperating improved means for precluding accidental displacement of the screw and driver during the screw driving operation.
The novel features that are considered characteristic of the invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claim. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like parts through the several figures and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the screw of the present invention in engagement with the driver, the screw being shown partially in section;
Figure 2 is an elevation of the screw driver and showing the screw in broken lines;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the tip of the screw driver;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of one type of a screw of the present invention;
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of the screw of Figure 4, and
Figure 6 is a view of the novel screw driver in operation with a conventional screw.
In that form of the present invention here shown by way of example, the screw driver includes the usual shank 1 and handle 2 which may be of any size, shape and construction as conventionally now in use. The tip 2A of the screw driver is formed into a flat disk 3. The disk 3 is substantially round and is adapted to enter a slot 4 within a screw 5.
In the screw of the present invention the slot 4 is shaped to fit the periphery of the tip 2A of the screw driver, as best illustrated in Figures 1 and 5. This prevents the tip of the screw driver from slipping sidewise, as well as permitting the driver to operate in the slot with the handle at various angles to the screw. The screw driver of the present invention may operate on screws of the cross slot type as indicated in Figures 4 and 5 and thus, the screw of the present invention contemplates screw heads with either single or crossed inwardly curving slots. It will also be noted that the present screw driver may operate on the standard screws 6 Within the standard slot 7, as illustrated in Figure 6.
The outstanding feature of this screw driver is the shape of its tip wherein the same can be operated at an angle to the screw, as shown in the dotted lines of Figure 1. As will be noted the driver can be operated at a complete degree angle, providing a handle for rotating the screw other than twisting the screw driver in the usual manner.
Although a certain specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is obvious that many modifications thereof are possible. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted except in so far as is necessitated by the prior art and by the spirit of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a screw driver construction including a handle adapted to be grasped by a user, a shank projecting from said handle, a screw driver head on the end of said shank for engaging in a slot in the head of a screw, said head being so formed as to engage in a screw head slot when the screw driver shank is in alignment with the screw, at right angles to the screw or any intermediate position relative to the screw, said head comprising a generally circular disc of considerably greater diameter than any transverse dimension through the shank parallel to the reference diameter of the head, the major portion of the circumferential marginal edge of said head being free from attachment to said shank and projecting outwardly therefrom, said head being joined along a radial line thereof to said shank, the thickness of said marginal edge portion of said head which is unattached to said shank being uniform in all directions throughout, enabling the use of the head throughout a variation of in the position of the shank relative to a screw head with which said screw driver head is in contact while maintaining the same depth of penetration within the screw slot.
