Description
June 19, CLARKE OILING ATTACHMENT FOR HINGES Filed April 26, 1955 I N VENTOR ATTORNEY United States Patent OILING ATTACHMENT FOR HINGES William Clarke, West Hollywood, Fla.
Application April 26, 1955, Serial No. 503,975
1 Claim. (Cl. 16-161) The present invention relates to an oiling attachment for hinges and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided an attachment for a hinge consisting of a cylindrical oil container having an open top and a bottom which is apertured to receive therethrough the body of a pintle, the head of the pintle being adapted to be received within the container. A plurality of circumferentially spaced relatively small notches extend radially from the pintle receiving aperture. A cap for the container completes the device and the device is such that it may be quickly and easily mounted upon the conventional hinge pintle and provided with a few drops of oil which will thereafter be fed by gravity and capillary attraction down upon the outer face of the body of the pintle thus effecting a saving of oil and at the same time providing a means for maintaining a hinge in constantly lubricated condition.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a novel oiling attachment for hinges.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and efiicient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for feeding oil to a hinge construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel means for storing a lubricant.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a hinge showing an embodiment of the present invention mounted thereon,
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view, partly in section, illustrating an embodiment of the invention mounted upon a hinge,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of a cap forming a part of the invention,
"ice
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of a container forming a part of the invention, and
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line 66 of Figure 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a hinge structure including a pair of hinge plates 10 each provided With conventional pintle bearings 11 through which extends in conventional manner a pintle 12 provided at its upper end with the conventional head 13.
The device of the present invention consists of an open topped cylindrical container 14 provided in its bottom wall with a centrally disposed circular opening 15 from which extends radially a plurality of relatively small notches 16. A cylindrical cap 17 completes the device.
In use, it will be apparent that the pintle 12 is first inserted through the aperture 15 in the container 14 and then positioned in the pintle bearings 11 in customary manner. It will also be understood that the opening 15 is of such size as to snugly fit against the outer surface of the pintle 12. A few drops of oil may then be placed in the container 14 and will then flow by gravity and capillary attraction through the notches 16 downwardly upon the face of the pintle 12 to thereby lubricate the interior of the bearings 11 in their contact with the pintle 12. The cap 17 snugly fits over the container 14 to thus prevent dust and the like from entering therein. Thus it will be seen that the device may be filled only on rare occasions and that it will then maintain for long periods of time a hinge in proper lubricated condition.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination with a hinge structure including a pintle having a shank and a head at the upper end of said shank, an oiling attachment for said hinge structure comprising an open-toped cylindrical member encompassing said head and having a centrally disposed aperture in the bottom thereof for receiving said shank therethrough, and a cap removably mounted on the upper end of said cylindrical member, said aperture having a plurality of relatively small circumferentially spaced radially extending grooves extending outwardly therefrom.
