3 Claims. (Cl. 240-81) 7 The present invention relates to electric lamp assemblies and to a novel form of lamp having a shade of translucent laminated sheet lighted partially on their edges.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide a new and novel lamp and shade for indirect lighting and one that furnishes a soft diffused glow in two directions while being brighter in one direction forward.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel lamp that is movable on its base in a limited circle for particular illuminating of a vase of flowers or other display positioned on the base forwardly of the lamp.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a novel and attractive shade for a small table lamp such as is used for side light on a television set, which shade is constructed of laminated plastic or other translucent material, and one which has a reflecting surface on the inside of its back panel, with the sides of the shade being illuminated through their edges.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide a lamp and shade of rectangular proportions which will occupy little vertical height while on a television set, and may be used for shadow illumination of some article placed forwardly of it, or may be placed effectively at the bottom of a bowl of flowers, although not with water, for the illumination of flowers or plants placed therein.

These and other objects and advantages of the pres ent invention will be fully apparent upon consideration of the following description when considered with the annexed drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the present invention.

Figure 2 is a top plan view.

Figure 3 is a side view in section, taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, and

Figure 4 is a front view in section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.

Referring to the drawing in more detail, the invention is seen to consist of a base having a circular opening 11 in the top surface in which a circular housing 12 is rotatable. The housing 12 has a top plate 14 slightly larger than the opening 11 and overlying the edge 15 of the opening. The housing 12 has a switch body 16 in it with the switch handle 17 extending upwardly through the plate 14, and similarly positioned is the electric lamp socket 18, connected to the switch body 16 electrically and to the electric cord 19, in the conventional manner.

The socket 18 extends upwardly to support a lamp 21 in its upper end, and is secured to the plate 14 by an insulating ring 22 cemented or otherwise fixed to the upper portion of the socket. The upper top wall 23 is formed of insulating material also, while the circular side wall 24 of the housing 12 may be of metal or other relatively stiff material.

The shade of the present invention consists of a front 2,750,493 Fatented June '12 1956 socket 18; The back panel 26 has a reflecting pane'l 28f immediately adjacent and on each of the other two sides the side members 29 and 31 complete the box that encloses the socket. The side members 29 and 31' are formed of a plurality of sheets each of substantially the same thickness as the front and back panels-25 -ahd26. Also, sheets comprising each side member 29 and-'31 are all of the same size and abut each other as shown in Figure 2. The side members 29 and 31-, and also the front and back panels 25 and 26 are preferably formed of plastic sheets laminatedtogther with a suitable cement, andthey are preferably either fully :tmn parent or translucent-,with the side members being edge or side lighted, and the front panelbein'g lit from the rear. The whole assembly resembles an open-topped block or box, substantially rectangular in cross section and enclosing the socket 18 in an opening that is approximately square. The reflecting panel 28 may extend throughout the length of the block or box or may be merely positioned behind the socket 18 within the squared opening. A small opening 30 in the back panel permits ventilation of the lamp.

Preferably, the upper corners of the shade are beveled or rounded and the device may be secured to the housing and plate by means of screws or studs 32 cemented by their upper ends into the panels or side members. An insulating grommet 33 protects the electric cord 19 where it leaves the housing 13 through the bottom panel 34, and legs set the base 10 sufficiently high to permit movement of the cord 19 as the housing is rotated in the base opening. This rotation permits varied illuminating effects, and adds to the attractiveness and novelty of the present invention.

While a single embodiment of the present invention has been here illustrated and described, many other embodiments may be practiced, and many changes and modifications in the present embodiment are contemplated without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A lamp and shade assembly comprising a base having a circular opening therein, a housing rotatably disposed in said opening and being formed with a top plate overlying said base at the edge of the opening therein,

an electric lamp socket disposed in said housing and extending upwardly through the top plate of said housing, said socket being adapted and arranged to support an electric lamp in its upper end, upstanding front and back panels secured by the lower edges to said plate in spaced face to face relation one each on the front and back sides of said socket, a reflector panel secured by its lower edge to said plate and disposed adjacent to said back panel on its confronting face, and side members disposed between said front panel and said reflecting panel on each of the other two sides of said socket, said side members being formed of a plurality of sheets each of substantially the same thickness as said front and back panels, the sheets of each side member being of the same size and abutting each other, said reflector panel and said side members and said plate forming an open-topped box enclosing said socket.

A lamp and shade assembly comprising a base having a circular opening therein, a housing rotatably disposed in said opening and being formed with a top plate overlying said base at the edge of said opening therein, an electric lamp socket disposed in said housing and extending upwardly through the top plate of said housing, said socket being adapted and arranged to support an panel between said front and back panels and disposed adjacent to said back panel coplanar with its confront ing face, and side members disposed between said front .panel and said reflecting panel at each end thereof, said side members and said front and back panels being formed of translucent sheets of substantially the same thickness and extending in the same direction, the sheetsof each side member being of the same size and abutting each other, said panels and said side members with said plate forming an open-topped box enclosing said socket. v

A lamp and shade assembly comprising a base having a circular opening in the upper surface thereof, a circular housing rotatable in said opening, said housing being formed with a top plate having its periphery overlying said base at the edge of said opening, an electric lamp socket in said housing and extending upwardly through the top plate of said housing, said socket being adapted" and arranged to support an electric lamp in its upper end, vertically disposed front and back panels on said plate, said panels being disposed in spaced face to face relation on the front and back sides respectively of said socket, side members disposed between said front and back panels on each of the other two sides of said socket, said side members and said panels being formed of translucent sheets each of substantially the same thickness and laminated together to form a translucent block having a square opening therethrough, said block being secured to said plate with said socket in said opening, and reflecting means on the confronting face of said back panel within said opening facing said socket.
