UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATHIAS J. HINDEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR TO HIMSELF, AND MARK FLANIGAN AND ANTHONY PARENT, OF SAMEl PLACE.
HYDROGEN-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,045, dated April 3, 1883.
Application filed January 31, 1883. (No model.)
.To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHIAS J. HINDEN, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hydrogen-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
1o This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of hydrogen-lamps; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure lis a perspective view of the top of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents zo a suitable jar, preferably of glass, in which I place a mixture composed of about ten parts water and one part sulphuric acid, filling the jar to within about two inches of its top, and from this I produce gas, as hereinafter dei scribed. Over the mouth of the jar A, I place a cover, B, to the under face of which, and at the center thereof, I rigidly secure the pendent chamber C, the bottom of which is open and reaches to within a short distance of the bottom of the jar A. Within this chamber C, I hang a block of zinc, D. Rising from the top of the cover is the pipe E, in the shape of an inverted letter U, the discharge being directly over the hard-wood cup F, which is rigidly secured to the cover. This pipe E is provided with a cock, G, the stem of which has secured to it the bell-crank lever H. One arm of the lever H is provided with a laterally-projecting pin, a, which rests upon the upper face ofthe spring I, one end of which is rigidly secured to the cover, while the opposite end, acting upon the pin above described, compels the lever to keep the cock closed, so that no gas can escape through the pipe, which has communication with the interior of the chamber O. The other arm of this bell-crank lever is faced upon its lower side with leather c, or other suitable material, which, when the cock in the gas-pipe is closed, is closed over the mouth of 5o 'the cup F. This cover not only keeps all particles of dust from entering the cup and accumulating on the sponge, thus keeping it clean and always ready for use, but also extinguishes the ame, when the lever is released, by cutting oft' the supply of oxygen. In this 5 cup I place a small crucible, made of blacklead, and in this crucible I place a small quantity of platin uni-sponge.
In practice, I irst till the jar with the mixture hereinbefore mentioned. I then insert 6o the chamber C with its block of zinc into the same, allowing the air in the chamber to escape through a proper vent in the gas-pipe until the mixture is at the same level in both thejar and the chamber. I then close the vent, and the action of the mixture upon the zinc generates gas, which rises in the chamber and forces the water out at the bottom into the jar; and this gas-making continues until the solution has been expelled from the 7o chamber and the zinc is entirely out of the solution. By depressing the lever so as to allow gas to escape, such gas is expelled and discharged upon the platinumsponge, such sponge becomingincandescent, and ignites the gas, which will continue burning until it is all exhausted' or the lever is released, allowing the spring to close the cock.
I am aware of Patents Nos. 78,755, 47,012,
and 129,681, and make no claim to the con- 8o struction shown thereby.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a hydrogen-lamp, the combination of the cup F, cock G, and bellcrank lever H, one end of which is adapted to cover the cup when the cock is closed, substantially as described.
2. In a hydrogen-lamp, the combination of the cup F, cover B, cock G, bell-crank lever H, one end of which latter is adapted to cover the cup when the cock is closed, and'pipe E, 9o substantially as described.
3. A hydrogen-lamp consisting of the jar A, cover B, chamber C, zinc D, pipe E, cup F, cock G, bellcrank lever H, one end of which latter is adapted to cover the cup when the cock is closed, and spring I, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
